I'm not a professional film critic or anything, and I'm not trying to comment like one, but I've got something I'm pretty sure on why some movies are so great: They simply never stop on get better as the runtime go.
I saw the movie because of its reputation. I knew its something good and i wanted to find out why everyone can't stop praising it. So when Henry Fonda pulled out that switch blade and stuck it on the table, i thought "oh thats it, that's why they say this movie is great, a huge twist". And then came the old guy with great insights about the old man downstairs and the woman across the street, they were on 2 to 10; And then there was the man who shouts his hate for people from the slumps, everyone in the room showed him how ignorant he was, they were tied on 6/6; And finally, the last man teared up his photo with his son he haven't seen in 2 years, sobbingly say "not guilty" ... Everything built up like a pile of random acts at first, but as the movie progresses everything fell into place like a luxury box of Belgium chocolates. I'm not saying you need to be keep on getting better to be a great movie, a lot of classics don't work the same way (or even the opposite), but if a movie can build up like 12 Angry Men, you just can't be bad.
Masterpiece. Or maybe i should say, Chef-d'oeuvre. It's so beautifully made, i wonder if what I'm seeing is actually real; everything is romance I feel like I have just started to learn the meaning of love. Yes its an homage to Hollywood musicals, but this marvelous work from Demy can't be fully explained by such a shallow term.
Absolutely genius. i would never have thought a script this perfect is possible
Saw it for the first time at a special screening as a 30th anniversary event for the film. i really do agree that the adolescent part and adult part isn't as amusing as the child part, but the story is so full of interesting and memorable characters (even the noisy crowd at the paradiso!), and though not amusingly but precisely, captured important moments of one's life (friendship, first love, lost, guilt etc.), Giving us the room for us to reflect ourselves on our own ups and downs in life. With all the flaws in count this film is still way beyond 10/10 for me. What a great movie.
I have seen quite some samurai movies and i gotta say, nothing on my list come close to this one. and perhaps never will.
I'm a super movie nerd and usually when im watching a horror movie im sizing up the lighting, thinking about where this shot is taking me and when is the next jump scare gonna happen etc.
but i was so hooked on this story i actually kinda forgot all that and let the movie do what it was supposed to do: scare the crap outta me!
and theres something i gotta mention, although the trick kind of got old by the end of the movie (and the audience had lots of fun doing it themselves), the tongue clicking thing? thats real smart. when it first happened it played so well, im sure if it was followed by a spook i might actually jump from my seat.
cant believe this is the director's first full length movie. well done!
In one word : Gem-like.
The original title of the movie,"寝ても 覚めても" actually means "in dreams or awake". Don't some scenes feel kinda dreamy? Actually not a single shot in the movie features any strong daylight: scenes either take place indoor, at night, under heavy overcast or under heavy filter, giving you that dreamy, gloomy look.
In the final scene as they run along the riverside, sunbeams started to come through the clouds and sparkle on the water and trees, and houses, as if all the dreaming is finally over, and our protagonists have both grown. Im not saying "Asako 1&2" is a bad title for this excellent movie, but knowing the original title definitely make it bit juicier.
This time around I pretty much scanned the movie. Found a handful of plot holes, mostly related to how subconsciousness works (i try not to watch those "Inception Explained" youtube vids). BUT, that being said, they are super well concealed within the plot, it gives you the feeling that "hey i will believe just that to let this amazing story flow".
look for me if you need someone to debate with about this movie. always welcome.
This movie portrays a crossing point of 2 eras: colonialism is lurking around the lone island, and samurais are almost the thing of the past - but some just can't let it go, and they would do anything to have their old glory stay with them. Betrayals and mind games, twisted Bushido, izo breaths the final breathe of the sanity of samurais.
the director managed to get this bunch of kids to act so well to tell this metaphorical story is more amazing than the metaphorical story itself.
Yes there are huge plot holes, and yes there are lots of space cliché, but the scale, the scope of this movie can make you completely forget all of that, and have your heart pump beat after beat with all the airlocks, spacesuits, hatch doors, rockets and space stations made kapoom powpow exploding just to get Matt Damien back to earth! ha! kinda sounded ridiculous but it did work its magic.
Like it or not, these are the movies we should support. There haven't been much breakthrough in cinema for years, and believe me, Mother! is one of the forguard of movie storytelling.
It's eerie, but strangely powerful. With this almost tailor-made script Maggie Gyllenhaal put good use with her skills, her character is so complex and daring and fragile, smart and naïve, and most of all referable, it's like she came straight out of a Christopher Nolan movie. It maybe far from mainstream but this movie certainly excelled from other Netflix titles, and for those who is willing to try, it's a good watch. And it's worth mentioning that the poems in the movie came by the hand of Vietnamese writer Vuong, went to see his works after the movie and some are literally breath taking.
watched this in the morning, kept me warm for the rest of the day.
was worried about the 8 i gave so i watched it again. the 8s still solid.
Had I seen this as a teen, maybe i would have learnt about passion and being in love very differently. Still, I love it in my 20s. I look forward to coming back again in my 30s and reflect.
You can always count on a Gyllenhaal for great acting, whatever the character.
This movie will always have a place in my heart.
It's got all the action movie clichés you can think of, protagonist that got in the eye of storm by accident, bomb defusing, Morse codes, antagonist that always gets an extra life, action clichés you name it you got it. its got ideas pulled from everywhere but it was detail filled enough that the actual result was pretty good to the eye.
If I'm to see an action movie, this is the kind i want to see.
Perfect family movie. i first watched it as a kid, now rewatching it after 13 years it's still pretty awesome! And i dont think there are that many kid movies in these 13 years was as exciting as this one.
this movie for me is more of : “Wtf did i just watch but w/e it's fkin awesome”
It's a good movie. So it's kind of a one of a kind thing in Jack Black's Portfolio.
Just came home from it, got a lot of nostalgic scenes in it that's great for fans of the first one, so many that i would call it a service. Don't get me wrong i like the movie a lot and clearly the people behind the camera studied the first one extensively, possibly frame by frame to get the style right. but the noir and gloomy feel to it went wrong at some point in the second half of the movie, as it got completely overshadowed by Scott's newer styles. So yes this movie have moments that gives me the nostalgia of my favorite movie blade runner, but in way more circumstances i feel like I'm watching Martian or Prometheus. (or any other 21 century Ridley Scott sci-fi movie)
A fantastic gateway movie for those, who just picked up an interest in Japanese animation, wondering what's more to this genre than Ghibli and Shonen action anime.
A silent Voice is a great movie that tells the worth of animation, just as Satoshi Kon would say it, it has a freedom that is priceless and irreplaceable.
so, Smoking or non-smoking?
They should have named it Ford Racers v Ford Executives.
Expected performance in an expectedly okay biopic, nothing too surprising, but that's something we need at times. Times like these when everyone else seems to make biopic way too fancy and jumped over the moon.
What an adventure. If typical movies are buses, and scenes within are different bus stops, 1917 is a supersonic fighter jet taking you around the world, all in (seemingly) one tank of fuel. The movie can be a bit too slow at first, but as the final act draws near it will start to pickup pace. once you get to the scene in the ruins you will know that its the right call to go Imax.
Witty fun! Nothing to add!
How satisfying is it, to see the good guy getting bettered in every way by the mastermind, just to have the table turned around in the last 3 minute?
