The Mule

"It's really flat", thats what i thought when the credits started rolling. but then i thought, "hey you just watched a 90 year old cowboy, singing folks songs and driving cross states for 2 hours, didn't even yawn." Fair point inner voice!
Fun fact: for a 2018 crime movie, only one ACTUAL gun shot was fired, and only 2 gangsters was seen killed on screen the whole damn movie. Thats some achievement too. good job Tata.

City Hunter

Another japanese John Wick/ Gun-Fu attempt, and actually, pretty good! For a revival of an iconic 90s comic, which was once fittingly played by Jackie Chan, City Hunter 2024 brings all the elements to make the series something to look forward to again. Unlike John Wick, Ryo in City Hunter is a total show off which puts him in a perfect spot for lots and lots of flashy Gun-Fu mixed with, you guessed it- Jackie Chan-esque action humor, which is still the No.1 popular kind of action movie in Japan even now. This IP has the potential to be big and I look forward to a bigger budget sequel soon.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

Drawn inspiration from every action sub-genre, John Wick 3 Parabellum provides seemingly endless amount of guns and gore, great scenes great lighting great locations, old friends... all perfectly right and satisfying. the only problem is that, and as a fan it bothers me to have to point it out: Thats the same complements we gave to john wick 1 & 2.

For DC fans, it's a new movie featuring the 5th Joker on silver screen, for cinephiles it's 《Taxi Driver 2019》. They even have Robert deNiro to make it obvious for those who don't know for sure. Either way it's a way better Joker experience than Suicide Squad, a more creative, more lunny Joker back story that goes along with the now-standard, masterful Dark Knight trilogy. Who would have guessed an in-depth exploring to our favorite DC villain would be so rewarding? Oh wait, we all did. And we left the house with exactly what we hoped for, un-disappointed. I want to see this again and write a proper review, so much it makes me antsy.

Dream Scenario

This was really going somewhere, until it doesn't. the acting was spot on for the horrifying existential crisis that carried through the silver screen, but just as you thought you were going to get some resolution for going through all the suffering with Cage's character for 2 hours, you were left hanging when the lights came on.

Ghost Rider

As cheesey as they get was Ghost Rider, especially the prologue, "erh" is how I would describe it.

Every piece of information in this film is a spoon-feeding process done to you in dialogues plainer than white bread, and that seams to be the only way Hollywood handled comic adapts back the 2000s. To think that this only came 3 years before Ironman for me is still troubling to believe.

The way the camera moves, the way the female lead talks (and costumed, and many more things women that is totally uncool to view in 2024 standards), to the way the music is composed and played- all screams mediocrity louder than anything else, but hey, you and I both finished watching it so I guess there're some merits in making a movie about daredevil bike rider with flaming skull heads.

The Hurt Locker

This movie taught me that too much handhelds in a bright, contrasty movie REALLY hurts your eyes... (in contrast to horror movies like Rec., it shakes like hell but it's mostly black so it's :) )
If I learnt something else that would be I don't agree with the oscar committee on movies.

A Silent Voice: The Movie

A fantastic gateway movie for those, who just picked up an interest in Japanese animation, wondering what's more to this genre than Ghibli and Shonen action anime.
A silent Voice is a great movie that tells the worth of animation, just as Satoshi Kon would say it, it has a freedom that is priceless and irreplaceable.

Oppenheimer

In short, the 2 reasons why I like the film but was ultimately disappointed, are: 1. it was too chopped up in edits thus the focus was blurry; and 2. we are too hyped up for a new Nolan movie.
While he is still the refreshing breeze in the stinking film industry that blows our way every once in a while, and yes, his movies are always worth the ticket price- but Nolan just hasn't been the great story teller he used to be.

Barbie

When it is "fun" to just let loose, not think about anything and enjoy the marvelous cinematography and laugh at the silly dance, you can't tell everyone "best not to think about it" at EVERY problem in the plot when your story is ultimately about your protagonists having their great quest to self realization. There is a famous statue in Moscow by the waterfront where it is marveled at and laughed at by its citizens for its gigantic size and lack of purpose. While there's definitely a lot of craftsmanship in its making, it's resulted in nothing more than a good laugh and something fun to look at when your eyes have no better place to look at.
For Barbie, "Fun" is nothing but a cheap escape for a bad script and lack of mindful creativity, and a failed attempt to make itself a work of serious importance it is proclaiming to be.

Mercury Rising

Looking back, this movie is definitely one of the low points of 90s cinema, made uninspiredly from the golden formula borrowed from countless better movies with a similar rogue cop plot. First you need - 1 agent / police who must fight against bureaucracy; + 1 Black sidekick who is good with supporting from remote; + 1 forgetable chick who offers help blindly and unconditionally; + someone to save who always runs off or get caught and need saving; and don't forget the bad guy who has a crooked justice in his big head and a s*** load of authority.

There are actually plenty of flicks back then (and still now) which are actually well made using this formula, but if you happened to do too little or too much, there is still a chance you mess up big time and you end up burning millions of dollars to produce 120 minutes of trash time and wasted talent here and there.

Mercury rising is definitely one of the cases where they mess up, but too little or too much you ask? Well, I don't know and I don't want to know. Do you?

Executive Decision

It's got all the action movie clichés you can think of, protagonist that got in the eye of storm by accident, bomb defusing, Morse codes, antagonist that always gets an extra life, action clichés you name it you got it. its got ideas pulled from everywhere but it was detail filled enough that the actual result was pretty good to the eye.
If I'm to see an action movie, this is the kind i want to see.

Troy

Epic scale, little depth.
The actors delivered well, Eric Bana and actor of old king Priam were especially impressive. some overacting here and there to cope with the style is understandable for me, but the script is very mediocre, compared with the eye dazzling fight choreography and amusing set designs.
In short, typical Hollywood big budget to the bones. for a well known story such as Troy, you would expect they put a 21 century spin on it instead of doing it as is, something tactical, something outwitting. but no, Warner Brothers gave us more romance, which are super forgivable once the movie ends.
still watchable. but not much to remember.

The one thing i like about this movie: friendship and love is the only right way to help someone who's mentally suffering. In this movie it is very on point, and I'm sure this positiveness is helpful to those who is trying to help a friend like Kakeru.
The one thing i hate about this movie: i could forgive the slow pasing of the movie, i can also forgive the fact that how the time traveling letters works was never explained, i could even forgive the overly acted drama. But what i really couldn't forgive, is THAT SAME THEME MUSIC BEING PLAYED OVER AND OVER AGAINNNNNNN
