This show wouldn't had grabbed the attention it did if it wasn't attached to the Scooby-Doo intelectual property. If you changed the color palette and the design of the character, they would be irreconcilable if you compared them to their classic counterparts. Without that, it would be just another irrelevant & forgettable "adult show" that thinks adding vulgarity and foulness makes it "mature", it actually makes it childish. Also, the characters are not "meta" or "self aware" as the writers think, they are just doing cheap lamp-shading, trying to disguise it's terrible writing. The "humor" is not clever nor has a funny punch line, it's just repetitive pop culture reference and small penis mentions (not even jokes, just mentioning Fred has a small penis) which is disgusting body shaming. And finally, they make Vilma and Shaggy black to use it as an excuse to blame any criticism on racism, that card is getting old REALLY fast. This show doesn't have ANY redeemable qualities, is an insult to the audience's intelligence and the legacy of Scooby-Doo, thank God Scooby-Doo isn't a character on this, they would had also massacred that character too. Don't give this show your attention or even rage watch, bad media dies by been irrelevant and not paying attention to it.
I am not a big fan of Daniel Brühl so this wasn't very high on my watchlist. At the same time I like to watch period shows.
This was a very good mini-series and Brühl did a really good job. The pacing and lenght was just right, it never felt boring. There are two more books by Carr that feature Kreizler but I don't know if there are plans to film them. I certainly would watch. I am thinking about buying the books as well.
While the story itself might not be new or original in terms of the general content, the time period makes this very interesting. In a time where corruption wasn't uncommon and things like fingerprints, profiling were in its infancy (not to mention DNA not even existing) the way to catch a killer was very different. It made the hunt much more engaging.
The costumes and sets look great and althought you can easily identify the CGI, it is incorporated very well and sells the time period.
The cast is great as well, althought I never get the picture of little Dakota in Taken out of my head.
As I said I would welcome a continuation.
I really wasn’t expecting much, I thought it would be a difficult character to pull off and expected it to be a bit cheesy, especially given it had been cancelled.
However, to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I found it interesting, intriguing, lots of twist, great characters and acting and generally all round a great show.
I’m really confused to why it was cancelled?
DC don’t have the best track record, but I’m actually enjoying their shows; Doom Patrol being my favourite and Titans probably my least favourite. Swamp Thing was definitely somewhere inbetween the two.
I do feel the main female actress, playing Abby wasn’t quite right, I can’t really explain. However, her clumpy mascara in every episode really annoyed me lol :joy:
Her friend the reporter wasn’t brilliant either, but her part was weak rather than the actress.
Overall thought there were plenty of great characters and actors.
We saw a small development of the Blue Devil character, perhaps something that will have its own show. I like the actor and his portrayal and hope to see more.
Sad to say goodbye to Swamp Thing  But, do watch the first season; it ends with enough closure to the storyline, so you’re not left hanging.
Such a shame :frowning2:
Not for the faint hearted even though this show will leave you feeling Euphoria in some moments
This show straight from the word Euphoria literally brings lots of really important matters faced by teenagers today into light. This show is not for the faint hearted as it deals with drugs, violence, romance, sex and much more, therefore showing an all round representation of what teenagers are faced with nowadays. The main character RUE deals with her own demons from having a drug habit where she overdosed and her sister found her on the floor practically dead. RUE faking being clean to her Mom and then after meeting this girl called Jules who has her own demons and interests that is set on this man who is just a character cat fishing her into a false sense of security. RUE falls for her hard where the Euphoria grows and you watch their relationship go as RUE stays clean and keep going to rehab as Jules is literally her rock and the main reason why she is trying to stay clean. I am so happy and practically Euphoric right now that this amazing show has got renewed for a second season ten out of ten amazing acting especially from Hunter And Zendaya. Lets keep this new amazing HBO show going for lots more seasons too go and the soundtracks will leave you feeling so euphoric. #Rules #Euphoria #EuphoriaHBO #Zendaya
Sorry, I don't think your skin color has anything to do with it.
It's not that nobody cares because they are black girls...
The thing is, he is famous, he has money, he has power, he has fans, connections,
and a lot of people probably think they are after the money.
Some girls saw R Kelly as a chance to become big too.
They let him do whatever he wants on hope for better days.
He has money and some people are buy-able. Also to shut people up.
It's a heartbreaking documentary! I'm shocked...
What shocked me the most is that he gets away with this, he should be locked up for life.
He destroyed the lives of so many people. the young girls are not to blame here.
We need justice for those victims.
It saddens me to see how naive some people are to this day and want to believe that he is innocent.
I can't believe the people that still support him.
There was one girl Jerhonda Pace that went to his trial, supporting him.
She knew, and you can tell me everything but this girl was after him. Sorry!
R Kelly is for sure a predator a disgusting pedophile and he made a lot of innocent victims.
But her story didn't add up to me.
After this documentary I watched some more interviews she did, and sorry but I don't believe some things she is saying.
I hope there comes justice for his victims.
For a man to use his position and power to abuse women and enslave minors for his sexual pleasure is disgusting and evil.
He got away with this for way too long!
Altough I'm german I rarely check out german TV shows. The last one was Deutschland 83 and that was like two years ago. Germany just hasn't figured TV out yet but that's another discussion.
When I heard Netflix was producing a german show I just had to check it out because Netflix has a great track record so far and Germany does have talent infront and behind the camera. But overall I think this show just fell flat. Good, but nothing great.
Fantastic visuals that are shot very beatifull, the actors IMO are mostly great and the music/score can be beautiful but often gets obnoxious. But unfortunetly there are too many characters that are hard to keep track off which distracts from the story.
The story is already confusing enough even without trying to keep up with the many characters over different decades and it heavily sets up future seasons without answering a lot of questions about this one and just left me unsatisfied at the end.
Still worth watching tough IMO and very bingeable similarly to Stranger Things.
But if you do watch it then choose the subbed version. I checked out the dub really quick and it sounded horrible. And also don't browse your phone as you might do on other shows. You're going to miss so much important shit.
EDIT after Season 2:
I'm not actually sure what just happened and what I think about it. But the one thing I'm sure of is that the casting in this show is absolutely phenomenal. The actors look so much like their younger counterparts that I'm not fully convinced they aren't actually related.
Plus the cinematography is still fantastic and the music monatages are really beautiful (and they got rid of those obnoxious sound effects).
And altough the story is still very confusing I found it more easier to follow and more engaging than Season 1 because I now know all the charcters and their background. And it seems that the writers had this all planned out and aren't just making shit up as they go.
Changed my rating from 8 to 9.
EDIT after my first rewatch just before S3 is released.
Changing my rating again. This time to a 10. After S1 I thought it was good but confusing show (8), after S2 I thought it was great and really well thought out one (9). Now after rewatching both seasons for the first time I think the show is fucking masterpiece. (10). Once you can watch it without being confused and actually knowing what is happening your just in awe throughout all of it.
If they stick the landing with season 3 it could be up there with the best ever.
EDIT after Season 3
Masterpiece. Simple as that.
Writing. Directing. Cinematography. Casting. Acting. Soundtrack. Everything is perfect.
I'm going to miss the beautiful music montages at the end.
This serie grabbed me and haven't let me go yet. 13 Reasons Why was very well made and the mystery in this serie is the reason why I kept watching, and watched the entire serie in 1 sitting (almost, I had to sleep). I wanted to know why Hannah killed herself, who was responsible and the event leading up to this tragic event. Every one of those questions was answered, but the "serie finale" left alot of new questions unanswered. Is this a way of telling that it never ends? Maybe a way so everyone can think their own ending and get the ending they want? What will Tyler be doing? Will Tyler be the reason for a new season? I personally think they shouldn't be doing a season 2, but Tyler already preparing of taking down the people that actually "failed" him instead of what Hannah did. After seeing the 13 episodes I see alot of people making mistakes. It was Hannah saying stuff while people just obeyed what she wanted, but what she really wanted was just someone to give her what she needed not wanted (this is also what Clay says in during one of the later episodes against Tony). I hope everyone will learn something from this serie and note that suicide may look like the answer so everyone is free of the burden, but it's not. People will notice the impact of a suicide and you will be missed. There are always people that care about you. Everything you do will have a consequence and that is what this serie shows off best.
The "comedy" serie that makes you laugh, think and cry. The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air does a really good job at discussing real life issues like drugs abuse, firearms, racism and more, but still with some good comedy.
The reason I like the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air so much is because of the good cast. They complete eachother and that's also something you can see in the episode "I, Whoops, There It Is" in season 6 a.k.a. the blooper episode.
Some of the episodes can really surprise you. Starting off light and with comedy, hitting you right in the feels a few minutes after, so always be aware.
The last episode was the sadest one. Not that everyone moved on with their lives, but the moment everyone got honest. Will being scared of losing another family. Uncle Phill finally telling Will that he's a son to him, Will watching Carlton do the Calton dance and letting him do it. Geoffrey saying he will miss the family in his own way and still carrying Hilary's bag when he's off-duty.
All the actors are really good at acting and I sure will miss James Avery. May he rest in peace!
I surely wish there were more series like The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
I didn’t know much about Altered Carbon getting into it other than very basic information, having not read the books. Set in a far future, it has plenty of similarities with other media, most obviously the Blade Runner films with the visuals and a lot of fictional future elements. I found that Altered Carbon, however, had a better mix of action and drama and all the mystery and personal dilemmas were very enjoyable – taking the story as a whole, I think I enjoyed the heck out of it a lot more than the BR films.
At the core of the show is the idea of life after death, or rather, continuation of life beyond a natural lifespan through the use of new bodies called sleeves when the previous ones happen to expire. This is achieved via stacks, devices carefully inserted behind your neck, which many in the show regard as your “soul”. As long as these devices are intact, individuals are alive, though perhaps in dormant form if not located in a body. Stacks have affected many aspects of humanity, even creating the difference between a “real death” and a “sleeve death”; more importantly, though, is the fact that different society classes don’t enjoy them the same way. Preferential treatment is given to the wealthiest, with the richest of all even producing sleeves identical to their own bodies and coming up with ways so that, essentially, they can live forever. The lower class, however, must agree to whatever they can get depending on their finances, which can be a harrowing process – in the very beginning we see how a little girl involved in an accident received the body of an older woman and the family simply had to “deal with it”.
Going from this, the show spends a great deal of effort in establishing what happens with those who are all-powerful, “near-immortals”. We are presented with minds that have long been corrupted, resorting to depraved and violent means of entertainment. Laurens Bancroft acts and believes himself to be a God walking among the living (hell, they even live above the clouds) and many aspects of the marriage becomes pretty much meaningless. The daughter and son stay in the same sleeves just like their parents for centuries, which throws a wrench in the process of… becoming adults?
The mystery surrounding Bancroft’s sleeve-murder appears to be the main plot point, but eventually the family becomes sort of a secondary part of the show. The lifestyle and behaviour of the Bancrofts are preparation for us to understand the reasoning behind a massive plot twist that happens later on, definitive for the climax of Altered Carbon.
The protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs, is a hardened man who has been through four sleeves until getting to the current, played by Joel Kinnaman. Early on we start getting bits of information that he is the last of the Envoys, warriors of days past – the seventh episode (for me, the best episode) details how he became an Envoy and also shows the important, character-defining relationships with his sister, Reileen, and the Envoy leader, Quellcrist. The apparent loss of both, as well as all the Envoys in a massacre, coupled with being “on ice” for a couple of centuries, turn Kovacs into someone who doesn’t really care much for living despite the miraculous offers Bancroft makes in exchange for having his murder solved.
You would think Kovacs, who has enemies and attracts all kinds of trouble as a former Envoy, would have enough on his plate already – but as it turns out, his present-day sleeve is that of a policeman who has even more enemies. This leads to beautifully made action scenes, plenty of shootouts and also some interesting torture scenes in virtual realities where anything can happen (I found cinematography particularly good in these instances). Overall, I think they achieved a really good blend of action, dramatic moments, exposition (maybe even better towards the latter half than at the beginning). Also, worth mentioning is that is has plenty of violence and is one of the shows where I’ve seen most nudity, which may disturb some viewers – however, I keep feeling this seems specifically done to sort of mirror the entertainment of Altered Carbon’s richest where “all goes”.
I will admit that there are a few moments where it becomes slightly hard to follow the story, particularly the twists and turns of the investigation. I don’t like how Kovacs more than once “suddenly realises” all that happened and it seems we’re supposed to know instantly as well… but I didn’t. But I can’t say that detracted from my overall enjoyment. I will say, though, that were not for the twists and scheming involving Reileen towards the second half of the season, I probably wouldn’t be as excited as I am. This character seems to put a fire under the plot the moment she becomes a more prominent character in ways I found completely unexpected, easily having some of the most memorable scenes. The naked swordfight is a particular, incredible moment – hard to top as one of the most impressive of 2018, maybe (and it is only February). And with everything we have been exposed to before, her corrupt/evil thoughts and motivations become understandable despite her love for Kovacs. A great villain!
I don’t want to make this too long (too late, lol) but I’m forgetting to mention the other characters. Kovacs is assisted by multiple individuals: buddy cop Ortega, the Elliot family and Poe, an AI that is an entire hotel (adding one more layer of “peculiar” into all this). All these characters have their own hardships to deal with, further establishing the world of Carbon as a tough one for everyone involved. (Maybe for Poe not so much as for the rest… but hey, they did say AI hotels have no customers anymore, Kovacs being a sight for sore eyes when he walks in). I think all these characters’ stories (and other recurring ones as well) have been quite entertaining to watch and concluded in satisfactory ways.
All in all, this is yet another Netflix show to recommend. Beautifully crafted, great production value, great actors and a story that makes it worth your while. We will see whether it returns for a second season – the ending is conclusive enough, yet at the same time leaving plenty of room for Kovacs to return (maybe in another sleeve?)
I watch a lot of series, usually multiple episodes each day. I haven't read any of the Mortal Instruments books, but I watched the movie and it was alright. This and the show getting the best drama series GLAAD award were the things that got me to give it a try.
The first few episodes weren't a total blast, but then it quickly became one of my favorite shows of all time. I look forward to each new episode and then never get disappointed. There are some emotional moments that make me tear up, the characters are all quite unique and pretty much spotless in their looks, plus a dark world of vampires, werewolves, elves and magi can get my attention.
I'm not a fan of the basic "guy gets the girl" kind of stories but despite the expected plot line where the girl bats her eyes and the guy acts all cool, it is yet to put me off in this case. Maybe it's that there are multiple more plot lines in the show, or that the characters are likable. The show doesn't shy away from sexualizing them, but yet again, rather than feeling forced and over-the-top, it serves more as a reflection of our world.
