It's ok for a live-action remake if you don't expect it to be good. Since the live-action is not proper to its original, I guess this is an alternative. The fight scenes are a bit off, the dialogue between characters is wacky, the casting is a bit of a problem for Faye and Jet but casting "John Cho" was a perfect idea, and the art and the special effects are outstanding at best. There are some problems with the alternative cowboy bebop through with the theme of it. The original was darker and more depressing than the live-action. The anime consists of loneliness, corruption, destruction, and most parts relating to the modern aspect in 1998. While the live-action version is more child-friendly with the bebop crew being less aggressive and plays the bounty game like "Hungry Hungry Hippo." idk why Julia is introduced too soon into the series.
live-action series is a bad idea. idk why people still do it. I think it will actually be better using CGI like "The Adventures of Tintin" or 3DCG like "Lupin III: The First."

@quantem But they love the name quite evidently https://twitter.com/peepsalum/status/1461731632357031937. I'm honestly more concerned about the fact that they gave him a daughter than the race change. I'm only at the 3rd episode but they pretty much missed the mark for all the characters and this will certainly also (negatively) impact his role in the crew.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a Shonen Jump adaptation airing in NoitaminA's programming block but I got pleasantly surprised. Doing this kind of story with kids is a very easy hook and while mainly twist based it works quite well for the most part. Really loved the conclusion of the arc in regards to Mama too. I'd imagine further seasons to be more in line with regular shounen fare so we'll see how this goes.

@sp1ti S2 is trash if anyone cares.

  • Emma is an annoying saint
  • Convenient plotting to the max
  • No sense of danger at all despite venturing in more dangerous territories - Death toll still just 1
  • Warpspeed ending that lacks build up or any proper exploration of character motivations

WARNING: Looks like the Higurashi New marketed as a remake was bait all along.
This is a sequel* to the original series https://trakt.tv/shows/when-they-cry-higurashi.

Since it's based on a visual novel with different routes repeating events are expected which is why they were able to mislead with the premiere but the second episode reveals a twist of the series and references being set after the events of Higurashi. They also changed the title from "New" to "Gou" 業...

*What exactly it is we cannot say for sure right now but you are definitely not getting a fresh start.

@timbercompal This is not really a spoiler but a warning for people going into this thinking it's a remake when it's not. I think ignoring that fact does more harm and after episode two it's not a secret anymore --> new title, new key visual. Just spelling things out.

I was happy to learn that Quibi also gives horror a shot and if this would actually expand to 50 states it would be incredible - not that it seems realistic at the moment though (in part because of the platform but also because it is more expensive to produce)...
Like any anthology the ride is uneven and some of them actually felt too short but the production was on point so even the worst ones were at not flat-out bad

The Golden Arm (Michigan) - a bit underdeveloped backstory but good payoff with Evil Dead vibes.
America's Largest Ball of Twine (Kansas) - well done folk horror.
Scared Stiff (Oregon) - too short really...
Grey Cloud Island (Minnesota) - meh regular "modern-horror fare" with a twist that is obvious from the get go...
Destino (Florida) - Alejandro Brugués X Eduardo Sánchez collab which SHOULD have made use of the portrait mode the platform provides to do something cool but instead just plays the normal found footage stick :disappointed:.

Apparently this "pre-aired" so I hope it's going to get additional episodes soon... there were others announced in press before the release...

Attack on Titan (aka Shingeki no Kyojin in romaji) has proven to be one of the rare shows that sparks the attention from people who don't regulary watch seasonal anime. I mean, just look at the numbers on trakt alone: Two of the other more popular shows that started at the same time, Maou-sama and Gargantia don't even come close (less than a 100 watchers on the last episode). But not only that - even in the anime community itself it gained immense popularity and currently is still in the Top 10 on Myanimelist (kind of the western Facebook of anime). What is to take away from this is certainly that it seems to make for a good entry-level show but it's not one without flaws and I can't frankly understand why it gets that much praise (oh hello SAO!).

I first came into contact with it's manga because it ranked extremly high on Mangaupdates with some of the genre tags I browse. After reading the first 15 or so chapters I deceided to put it on hold. It didn't impress me and the art was everything but pretty (given that it was the authors first series and he didn't draw much before this). So when the show came around I saw potential for improvement given that the art could only get better plus action never suffers from being animated. This also means I had certain expectations and some of the early tension had been lost on me due to knowing some twists.

Now the story itself has plenty of shortcomings but is still entertaining. It starts out like your grimdark show about the struggle of mankind (in this case versus the titans) but it falls into the usual shonen trappings further down the road. I also find most of it's characters kind of stagnant in terms of developments and it's everything but subtle. The source material is still being published and is probably not even at the midpoint of which thr first season maybe adapted half of. This also means there isn't an ending yet. There is plenty of padding going around in the show and they added some filler to end it before the start of a new arc. I don't think the filler was all that bad but the padding put it's toll on it. Some episodes are extremly tedious to the point that nothing at all happened.

One the shows biggest problem for me comes in terms of animation quality. There are good looking scenes and the 3D rendered high-speed slides through the city on their 3DMG always looked great... it's just that it was inconsistent to the max. Quite early you begin to notice copy pasta and the worst possible use of stillframes with narration or dialogue over it. This is done a lot in the industry and it isn't necessarily a bad thing but the way they do it in this is so in your face and frequent you just can't help it. There was some talk about them lacking animators and that they were apparently looking for more but that couldn't have been the only issue. Around the episodes that relied on it the most a new OP hit the show with plenty of quality animation so yeah... The level of detail also decreased towards the end whenever it wasn't a closeup or something in the focus.

I guess this sounds really negative but I still gave the show a 7... it is just frustrating to see this hyped to the heavens when it really is far from perfect. If you're looking for an action show, sure - give it a go. It's just nothing great. I'm sure there will be more coming down the road (there have been spin-off stories already) and I cannot wait to see the train-wreck the live action movie planned for 2014 will be.

R.I.P. Moe titan.

loading replies

@slyazx I think so, yeah. While the time between cours isn't doing the show any favors when it drags there were still some strong episodes in there. Not entirely sure if I'm on board with the direction they're heading with some of the titan "revelations" though but compared to other seasonal hype titles AoT still manages to stand it's ground.

@player8472 Oh yeah! I also played the Voyager Elite Force game tons when it came out so you know... my interest is there, just not 800 episodes there. But no worries, I didn't actually rate this so your 10/10 after two episodes is not in danger and well supported by the modern day hype machine informing me of all the amazing TV shows I need to watch . I certainly know that I am better off not watching this and just maybe my "sad" comment can safe someone else the time.

@hopetrash I also remembered something like this but I think those were different cases. The ED article does not look to give 4chan any credit. They did omit some of his depravities in the doc curiously (it's not like it was family friendly programming) so I'm not sure if they actually got the name from self-dox or through EXIF data --> camera serial (which was like the only reason they were able to continue on).

I have never seen the old "Twilight Zone" but heard a lot about it so my expectations of a "modern" adaptation were quite high... and apparently way off. None of the episodes had a particularly interesting gimmick or explored that in any meaningful way. Instead the episodes end up being quite boring, sometimes goofy and just not very good... this also partly because in 2019 you have to include an important message in each episode, regardless of cost.

@aiven Too bad but that is exactly why I dropped it in the first place :). The casual viewerbase still seemed to still like it a lot at the time hence my note :).

Your lewdness issue to me still seems like a lost cause in anime *g. I don't see nudity alone as much as an issue and didn't think it was used in a lewd way here. The big-milkies-head-over-heels ogre lady or the hostess ladies were more in the vain of fanservice tbh.

I think Mike Flanagan is quite competent in most of what he does, but nothing of his ever blew me away. This show is no different as he certainly is aware of today's tropes and crafts an unusually slow paced horror story more focused on the psychological impact of the haunting than scares, but after so many scene transitions between the story's timelines it gets quite tedious. It is really the later half of the series that tainted my enjoyment with more focus on melodramatic elements, monologues and a conclusion that had me feeling like I just wasted quite a lot of time...

loading replies

@2ls1t Don't get me wrong, I also quite liked the show up to EP8 (I'd say) but endings are important to me; especially when there is this much time poured into single characters as was here.

What an odd series that turned out to be. I wondered how they could possibly fill 12 x 25 min episodes just based on the premise of one guy in class being ridiculously "cool", and it sems they did it by combining what you might expect (Sakamoto doing strange everyday tasks and making them look a lot more majestic) with other things like getting into some semi-serious plots with other characters involving bullying and planning revenge. I found the weird mix of tones a bit jarring and difficult to pin down exactly what the show was ultimately trying to be.

Ultimately I don't think I could personally recommend it. As a comedy I never found it particularly funny and when it tried to be serious it just didn't feel right.

loading replies

I'm also not amazed by the adaptation but the manga was fairly enjoyable. The generic music and character designs just didn't capture it the same way besides all comedic timing being different (striking poses and all).

I'm dropping this show as of Episode 7. I gave it a chance but especially with the last two they only made it much worse.

Taking the now age old concept of people being trapped in video games, these folks wake up with no recollection of their pasts and little desire to change anything about that. This setup however is only a cheap way to help with self-insert as it hardly plays a role in the show (just to pad the time with sometimes lengthy expositions about boring abilities). Instead Grimgar is focused on keeping everything as mundane as possible within it's fantasy setting: the protagonists are poor, suck at fighting, spend their time cooking and dwelling in teenage drama. The only enemies they fought so far are goblins, goblins, goblins... and goblins. Everything proceeds at snail pacing and that with only 12 episodes in total. There are other people that woke up in this world too but they all progressed much further in rank in the same time so there is no excuse to keep them as trashy as they are.
The problem however isn't just that it's slow but also that it's presented quite badly. Instead of ranting about the immature dialogue here or other shit they pull it is probably best to point to the production side of this show: it's further ruined by the urge to get money. Grimgar wasn't exactly a popular light novel and it seems they added in quite a lot of ways to generate revenue (kinda similar to how MARVEL markets it's universe). The edgy as fuck traumatic episode featuring a fight to death with a poor, lonely goblin ends with the boys trying to peek at the naked girls bathing. It was totally out of place and guess what, that part is sold as a BD special with the first volume.
In similar ways the insert songs work for the show. You get whatever plot in the first half and then montages of whatever mood the cast is in overlayed with insert songs. It totally fails but figure what; the band belongs to the production company of the anime and they're releasing the OP and ED discs...
While there were enough reasons to drop this one earlier I was kind of hoping for something unique. The visuals did that in a way with lush water color backgrounds but the animation ended up being mostly absent in many scenes further hinting at the lack of dedicated talent to this show.

After the last two episodes of truly autistic teenage problems I can safely say that this show has no potential at all and you're better of watching something else.

loading replies

so there is no excuse to keep them as trashy as they are

Yes, there actually is, it was discussed in this heavy dialogue or rather monologue driven anime at some point:
Our "heroes" are the weakest among them all. They were the ones who weren't picked by the stronger ones. They were the ones everybody looked down upon as weak and not good enough, nobody wanted them on a team or be in a team with them.

In that sense it is a unique anime despite a trapped-in-a-video-game trope. It does not show us the heroes on the front row, saving the world but the other end. What about the not so fortunate people, who aren't good in whatever they do and aren't liked by everyone for some odd reason? It's like a more serious Log Horizon meets Sword Art Online (in a sense at least). Less building a society, less harem, more fights and how to survive.

I agree with your music remarks and the usual otaku pandering (what included typical chest size "jokes") about peaking on girls, though. That pretty much ruins the episodes on a regular basis (Ranta is an awful male tsundere).
Other than that perhaps not as good as most people make it out to be, but I personally wouldn't exactly agree how bad you paint it, either. But I do get where you're coming from.

The second season of Noragami has just finished and it surpassed the first in every way. I remember really enjoying the first season but finding the final few episodes and confrontation a bit underwhelming. Well, the second season doesn't have that problem. It hits the ground running and remains consistently good throughout. Deciding to animate two arcs back-to-back with little-to-no filler in between was definitely a wise decision by Bones.

As others have already said, this series really does stand out from other more generic action/comedy shows, thanks to a likable and well-developed cast, good quality animation and of course a godly soundtrack by Iwasaki Taku (also responsible for the soundtrack in Katanagatari).

All in all I have really enjoyed Noragami thus far and I hope we get more in the future.

That was quite an interesting series. I rather liked the jarring tonal shifts between cute slice of life and zombie horror. The series also did a pretty good job at not playing its hand too soon either. The first episode does a good job of just enough hinting that things aren't quite right, before the reveal at the end. To be honest I initially did think Megu was already dead because of how the rest of the group "ignored" her, but because some of the episodes flashed back to when she wasn't, I wasn't so sure, so the reveal was still pretty effective.

I really liked how the OP "decayed" more and more each episode - it made the cute J-poppy song more and more jarring to the tone of the series.

I wasn't too keen on the rather poor CG, but sadly this is pretty standard these days for most series without a budget. The series had some pretty effective horror moments but it didn't always hit the mark, and some episodes felt like they meandered around a bit.

Still, I definitely enjoyed it. A rather strange series where you're not really sure what to expect.

loading replies

The anime did the mistake of being too dog focused ;)... I sort of appreciated that they went a different route than the manga, up until the flashback episodes which are not a storytelling improvement. There is also that worthless pool episode and the terrible symbolism with the whole "school is out" ending.

And then it was CANCELLED by the end of season 1 with only 10 episodes. I've come to believe that the TV industry has become spoiled by the low cost, low budget, low quality invention of Reality Shows. It seems that any new show that comes out, if it doesn't kill the ratings the first season and in some cases I've seen the first 3 episodes, the TV Executives kill it. This show had some real potential and could have gone in so many directs, hell the whole first season was like a roller coaster ride of suspense and discovery and twists at every turn. I love a show that when you start to think you know what's going on, something else happens that makes you say, "NO Fing Way"! So sad that the TV industry has forgotten what commitment, loyalty and belief to a show is and that it may take some word-of-mouth and the like to gain larger audiences but if you kill it early, you'll never know. I guess it really is all about the money but then again maybe the Internet and online programming like Netflix (and others) will start to change all that with better shows.

loading replies

The show was designed to end this way. I think they covered all three current books. If anything they would have taken a different story for S2 (think American Horror Story, True Detective). No need to romp on the TV industry...
