Stunning, grotesque, profane and hilarious. The performances are killer, especially Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo (but everyone is good). Bizarre, yet philosophically thought-provoking dialogue with a playfulness with words. Uncomfortable gender treatment yet that's the point. Sets that look designed by Gaudi. A career high for Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone.
With 'Poor Things', director Yorgos Lanthimos has created a film that has quite a few similarities with the box office hit 'Barbie'. Both are about women who start out as objects without any self-determination and, in the course of a journey, find themselves and discover their freedom. Both films also impress with fantastic costumes, good performances, and, most importantly, a phenomenal production design.
But, while I enjoyed 'Barbie', this Frankenstein story is in a completely different league. Lead actress Emma Stone delivers perhaps the best performance of her career, and Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe are also great here. The absurd humor worked perfectly for me. I haven't laughed more in a movie all year than I did in this one. And ultimately, the world that Lanthimos creates is one that has never been seen before. It's really difficult to create something "new" in film in the 21st century, but that's definitely the case here.
All in all, I not only give "Poor Things" my highest recommendation, but it is also my favorite film of 2023.
It's almost 25 years old, I've seen it a dozen times, and I still like it :)
The movie is slow, looks old, Tom Cruise is already annoying, but after a while this movie will make you laugh, make you wonder, make you lose track of time, and it's one of the best feelgood movies ever! Dustin Hoffman is amazing to watch in one of the most memorable roles I've ever seen.
had its moments but not my kind of movie.
nicely made and good acting though but as I said didn`t reached me
The theme is sacrifice and oh my god! Kino knew from the beginning he was doomed when he saw the ocean around that prison but gave his all to give back life to those prisoners, Andor admiting how much he wants to fight against the Empire, Mon Mothma having to choose how much she's willing to give for the rebellion, Luthen and the toll this rebellion has taken on him. Amazing acting this episode as well, especially on those great monologues. Favorite episode yet.
The "what have you sacrificed?" scene is one of best written dialog scenes on TV, ever. When this show decides to deliver the lines, they are top of the game. Mad kudos to the writers, and the actors who deliver them so well - tears swell easily. This episode was the best.
That speech by Luthen was everything I needed :fire:
Good characters, good music, the art style reminded me FLCL, the show on certain occasions I felt the essence of Cowboy Bebop... amazing.
Is the show made for young people? Like 90% of anime, with protagonists around 16 years old.
On the other hand, I had no idea that this anime was being developed, therefore I never expected what other kids expected, some kind of prequel to the videogame, I love that they didn't, they make you feel that your story in the videogame is not special, there were others before you and there will be others after you... a living city, night city.
There is no Johnny Silverhand here, thank god... that already adds a point to the show
NGL so parts of this I thought was filmed with a real camera. There is still some uncanny valley there, but this was very very good.
Ooo who doesn’t love the “creepy alien things hidden away in caverns” thing.
Also, hail chthulhu
Christ on a bike!
This was an intense un.
And omg. “I salute your courage sir”
This was incredible :joy:
This was one of the most beautiful and thought-provoking episodes of LD&R. It had a similar tone to Zima Blue, even though the story was completely different. It instantly became one of my favorites.
I know it's going to come off as preachy to some, but I don't care. This apparently has to be beat over some people's heads.
"Humanity had all the tools to heal their wounded planet and save themselves, but instead they chose greed and self-gratification over a healthy biosphere and the future of their children." That is so deep and so true.
There's no doubt that the alternative ending is WAY better than the original one.
"Dexter: New Blood showrunner and screenwriter Clyde Phillips teased in a new interview that the finale of the continuation series will "blow up the internet" when it airs." "It is, I personally think, the best thing I've written."
A lot of things in this episode doesn't make sense also I don't mind killing Dex at the end but serving very dissapointing ending TWICE, wow what an achievement... They make fool out of me, again. What now? Season two and Dex will be a ghost, like Harry? Please, don't.
The 2nd half of this episode felt rushed. They should have added 1 more episode or maybe another 30 minutes to this one to finish some things off.
A couple of episodes aside, It's a pity really;
Such Great Animation is wasted on Such Mediocre Stories.
Some great stories, especially in terms of CGI (Automated Customer Service, Pop Squad, Snow in the Desert). But in terms of storyline, the rest is thinner than the first series. Pity.
I rated last season a 9 out of 10... can I rate this season a 900 out of 10? HOLY SHIT that was amazing!!!!!
I am 50 years now, watched SW ANH the first time in the early 1980s.
This show did (so far) what I hoped the sequels would do.
Thank you Jon Favreau
Thank you Dave Filoni
Where is the 11th heart for this episode?
I was so tense when the x-wing appeared and I was holding my breath for the whole fight. When he pulls of the hood I couldn't help but crying.
Even if the show would stop right there I would be very happy. But I am also very eager to see what comes next.
It's going to be a long year.
I f*king cried, Luke at the end & R2 ?! best episode ever. This even tops the sequel triolgy for me. You know, this even makes 2020 a good year. 10/10
Maybe it’s going to be an issue in the next episode, but Mando left his jet pack on the hillside, and never retrieved it. If he had, he would have been able to get to Grogu in time.
Go to hell Moff Gideon , leave my cute little grogu alone.
I like this concept in this serie the doctors, I love Shaun
Fantastic episode, having Katie Sackhoff play as Bo-Katan was a fantastic casting choice. Cannot wait for next episode, seeing the live action version of Ahsoka Tano is going to be sweet as!
BO-KATAN!
This was the episode I was waiting for from this season. Finally, we progress a little bit of the season's overarching goal, and we get everyone's suspicions confirmed. Bo-Katan and Ahsoka Tano are coming to the Mandalorian!
Not only this, but we finally get an explanation as to why Mando acts so different compared to those in other Star Wars media (e.g. Star Wars: The Clone Wars). He's apart of a Mandalorian clan (cult) who wants to restore the original way of the Mandalore. It all makes sense now.
Seeing him interact with Bo-Katan and think they're fake Mandalorians at first was pretty amusing. It's quite a "fish out of water" moment.
I love this show.
IT'S SO MUCH FUN.
TECHNICAL SCORE: 7/10
