Smartest creature ever. Super adaptable, evolutionary. This is by far the bad assiest being ever imagined. The science in the movie was up to my extremely lofty standards. For the first time, ever in a horror movie, this thing could theoretically actually exist makes the movie extremely interesting. The main reason I gave it a 9, is due to the fact, they should have sacrificed the first guy, immediately. I had one other issue, but that would tip spoilers. Other than that, this is a great, thrilling, mind bender of a horror sci-fi movie.
And for those who ridiculously state this was "like Alien". This movie had a super intelligent, highly evolved bacteria. This was never done before. Actual physics and biology was implemented. It wasn't just some creature out of the mind of a teenager. The crew were attempting to contain and survive. Never before have I saw a movie, that was about containing an entity while above the planet. This used an actual space station, that is real and does exist. This was not a fairy tale of a movie, as was Alien. No one was hunting this thing down with guns and such. This movie is about what can actually happen as we go frolicking around our solar system. This is something that we should actually be worried about. That is completely ground breaking in every way possible. The Europa Report was closer related to this film, but even that was not as real of a threat as this movie, since it was on a Saturn moon, using theoretical science and fictional equipment. Life used all actual equipment, actual science, and actual crew reactions, although, I would have sacrificed the first guy, immediately and launched the immature state of Calvin at the first sign of an issue. And one last thing, Calvin didn't even kill anyone, except the first guy, who was attempting to incinerate it. I bet in part two, we will find out he is actually peaceful.
This movie was nothing like Alien. Besides the fact that the setting was in space and there was a creature hunting them down (or was he?). The Alien was killing, Calvin was surviving.
Just watched the pilot and I gotta be honest, this is the best pilot of any serie I have ever watched. Can't wait for future episodes.
Was invited to an early showing of the film and for those of you thinking of going to watch it.. don't bother, unless you are a fan of 80's action cinema and are able to switch your mind off to the inane and brutal action on screen. The premise is implausible - I mean would the world leaders really gather in mourning for the UK Prime Minister, in one place! Its doubtful the public would line the streets either!
Too violent for a 15 certificate, glorifies the killing of others, and excuses use of drones to wipe out terrorists.
London Has Fallen? Hollywood has fallen more likely!
This will probably become more beloved than Dune for being a bigger, more action driven film. Personally I prefer the first film by a long shot, but there's a lot to like here. I loved Paul's new journey for this installment as it doesn't develop in the way you'd expect based on the ending of the first film. The themes of colonialism, false prophecies and religion reach a level of depth that cannot be found in other sci-fi/fantasy contemporaries like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars; this film certainly made me understand why this story is taken so seriously as a piece of literature. Despite the source material being so old, there's still something new and refreshing about it. You don't often see major Hollywood productions calling out religion as a manipulative force helping the people in power. On top of that this brilliantly subverts the concept of the hero's journey we've become accustomed to by everything that was in one way or another inspired by Dune. The acting is pretty great, Timothée does a great job at playing the transition Paul goes through. Despite his boyish looks I was sold on his performance as the leader of the Fremen. Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem are also scene stealers. The visuals are once again mindblowing, in terms of set/costume design, cinematography and CGI this is as close to perfection as you could get to right now. The vision and scope of this movie are truly unmatched, which leads to some breathtaking sequences that I'll remember for a while (sandworm ride; the black/white arena fight; knife fight during the third act).
However, for all the praise I have for Dune: Part 2, I think Denis is being uncharacteristically sloppy with this film. First of all, Bautista and Butler feel like they're ripped from a different franchise altogether. Their over the top, cartoonish performances are more suited for something like Mad Max than the nuanced world of Dune. The bigger cracks start to appear when you look at the writing. The brief moments where the movie pokes fun at religious zealots through Javier Bardem's character, while funny, probably won't age very well. Like the first movie, it has a tendency to rely too much on exposition and handholding, a problem which might be worse here. I feel like a lot of the subtlety is lost in order to make the movie more normie proof, and that's quite annoying for a movie with artistic ambitions like this one. For example, there's this scene where Léa Seydoux seduces Austin Butler's character, and everything you need to know as a viewer is communicated through Butler's performance. Cut to the next scene, where Seydoux is all but looking at the camera saying "he's a psychopath, he's violent, he wants power, etc.". I just feel like compared to Villeneuve's precise work on Blade Runner 2049, he's consciously dumbing it down here. It's understandable and somewhat excusable for a complex story like Dune, but he occasionally takes it too far for my liking. Then there's the love story subplot between Chani and Paul, which almost entirely misses the mark for me. It feels rushed, there's no chemistry between the actors and some of the lines are painfully cheesy. Because of that, the emotional gutpunch their story eventually reaches during the third act did little for me. Finally, I'm a little dissatisfied with the use of sound. I loved the otherworldly score Zimmer came up with for the first Dune, however this film is so ridiculously bombastic and low-end heavy that it starts to feel like a parody of his work with Christopher Nolan. For the final action beat of the film Villeneuve cuts out the film's score, and it becomes all the more satisfying for it.
Overall, I recommend this film, however maybe temper those expectations if you're expecting a masterpiece. There's a lot to admire, but it's flawed.
6.5/10
Believe it or not I've never watched seasons 1-9. I watched the first 2 episodes of season 10 and thought "wow, cool series"... and then I watched this episode. How stupid can the writers be? They go from seriousness into comedy. I liked the angle the first two episodes took and then they made this. crap. Was the x -iles always this dumb with only occasional good episodes?
After 4 episodes: The visuals are unexpectedly beautiful but it suffers quite a lot from typical teen drama bs. But the fantasy world seemes interesting enough for me to keep watching.
The rehydrated came out naked, but the kid came out clothed. Why wasn't everyone else allowed clothes? I get that most of us don't want naked kids on shows, but if you know you can't do that, maybe don't have all the adults come out naked, so then it at least makes more sense.
Laughably dumb. More of an action comedy than anything with McGregor walking around tensing his arms. I feel sorry for Gyllenhaal considering his acting chops.
Against all the critics I read, I just loved the movie. Visually stunning and brlliant performances by Pratt and Lawrence. Definitly worths watch this one on cinema.
That photo...those are teeth...OMG...
Thumbs up if you said "What the fuck..." to your TV before the opening credits.
pathetic patriotic fearmongering bullshit ... first 15 minutes is enough to facepalm. PR movie for white house to sell the tax-waste for the war on terror to the public. Not worth the money to watch this - or even the time
When it isn't awful, it's cringe worthy.
I couldn't get enough of the books but this first episode was incredibly off-putting. I was really disappointed. I will check out the second episode but I don't have high hopes.
Worst MCU movie so far. If they don't produce something that feels epic and engaging going forward then the MCU is basically dead.
What a trainwreck of a movie.
Best of Marvel. Sad to see this end here.
Superhero Fatigue. Realy?! The Cure? Make Better Movies/Shows like this one. Stop trying to make kids movies/shows.
Loki is the most well-developed character in the MCU. This ending was truly worthy of the character!:green_heart:
Wow i watched this in one sitting with no breaks and i loved it its a great sci-fi anime that i am so glad i watched so if you love sci fi and can handle the fact its an anime go watch it
Wow! This show is great. Engin Ozturk is a good actor.
Son yıllarda hiç bu kadar gülmemiştim, izleyin izlettirin.
Episode 7 is not airing today due to the virus outbreak right now.
I'm enjoying the overall story, but when kids make obviously dumb decisions, it really irks me. If they can minimize scenes like this, this show could turn into something really fun.
Not really the most exciting gambling show as the games sort of happen without the viewer feeling much of an investment or really having much to guess about but damn are the facial expressions gold (very similar to Prison School).
Never heard about this movie before so it was a random pick and I have to admit that this was a huge suprise. The story kept me interested throughout the hole movie. The writing and acting was great.
HOLY SHIT! an superb thriller, excellent writing by Jo Nesbo!
Stunning. Mature. Intelligent.
The animation has sudden inorganic movements, which remind me of RWBY, and can be a bit disconcerting, yet somehow endearing, so I don't mind too much. I can't expect this to be this season's hit with younger audiences, but for mature viewers it hits a frequently unfulfilled craving. I am excited for more!
