@troop3r85 how dare we, to critize something... All and everything are special, awesome, great, everyone can achieve everything, never fail...
Yep, that's this day and age. That's why anxiety is everywhere, people don't learn anymore, that not everything's great, that we do fail sometimes, or even big time, that bad things happen even to good people.
That's life.
He's back ! Vader enters the picture and immediately the heat is literally turned up. One shot, one breath of him has more weight as ten minutes from the Third Sister.
I had not imagined that him and Obi-Wan would meet that early. And now we have the question of continuity. There has to be another meeting because that one could not have been what Vader was describing in Ep IV (with Obi-Wan being the Master and he the apprentice). Yes, those things matter to me. But as one-sided as the duel here was it had me on the edge of my seat. The lightsabers in the dark, the musical score, Vaders voice - that was an amazing sequence. How on earth did Reva get past Leia ? There is one tunnel leading to where the pilot was waiting and she had to pass Leia to get there first. Yet she was there waiting, the pilot already dead.
All in all by far the best episode. Obi-Wan talking about Padme and his memories of his own family was another great scene.
Now I'm hyped.
loading replies
@finfan I was confused on the tunnel as well.
Wow, what terrible acting and storylines. It's like they throw darts at the episode plot board and just riff on what they hit.
With every Star Wars spinoff Disney demonstrates their acceptance of mediocrity in entertainment. Each spin off uses the leftovers from the previous shows as set pieces and everything is just lower and lower production value with more talentless actors and bad writing.
Mando set a gold standard in the first two seasons, Fett was OK but felt forced, Obi Wan didn't really land and Ewan couldn't resurrect it, Andor was slow and recycled too many previous Star Wars sets and now Ashoka is just a sad attempt at another spinoff, of which there seem to be a limitless supply of. With Ashoka it seems like they are trying to break the "one season special" formula and make it a slow burn to run for multiple seasons.
Disney is grasping at anything to keep their failing streaming service (and frankly, their failing corporation) alive.
As I write this I realize how much Star Wars has been spun off, especially if you include Solo and Rogue One. Disney got their hands on the franchise and turned it into a giant cash grab which worked for a minute but is watering down a beloved franchise more and more with each spin off.

@tvwatcherdenver I agree fully, except that Andor was great!
when did the mcu get so silly and dumb and... bad? oh my god, i just wanted to see people treating each other like actual adults in the real world, not these dialogues that seem to be made for children (and this is actually insulting to children, i'm sorry)
and the EDITING on this episode??? that was really terrible.

@tuxedoville This is Star Trek Discovery on a good day. Star Trek sets itself apart by being thought-provoking and centered on the human experience. The whole science fiction/starships and aliens/OMGPHASERSPEWPEWPEW aspect is just a delivery vessel for something much more meaningful.
It's better than you learn that now, so that you don't waste any more time hoping that this show returns to being The Walking Dead/Breaking Bad/The Fast & the Furious in Space again. Yeah, that's what Discovery was when it started, but it's recovering nicely.
How can they know about a "night sky" and not know the stars? I read someone on reddit saying it might be a generational starship and it better not be I'm so sick of that "Lulz they were on a spaceship all along!" crap lately. Either than or it's all in virtual reality. No thanks.

@keverall more than a standard space battle saved by the score, and an unnecessarily long battle with a number of nameless characters with no attachment against a large Space Crocodile. Considering the wait for Season 3, there could have been more here.
Review by Alexander von Limberg
I could repeat my comments from last episode, but I won't do this. In a nutshell: it looks awesome, but the story and most characters are mediocre. I still enjoy it but it's certainly not great.
Let me talk about something else instead. Tolkien's work and Jackson's adaptation have always received their fair share of criticism regarding ethnic and racial stereotypes. One example is the problematic Wagner-ish portray of dwarfs. I won't go into this. Enough was said about this. In this show, they added Hobbit "ancestors". Hobbits were never funny and a a big fat Irish stereotype. Now they added this element of "migration". How could you not think that they are inspired by Irish Travellers? The Harfoots have other traits allegedly ascribed to their culture: they too love music, gather around campfires, organize themselves in families and live at the edge of society in relative poverty. It's like costume artists were fans of The Kelly Family. I'm not even saying that only negative stereotypes are reverberated: the Harfoots are too likable to immediately incite prejudice and discrimination against Travellers. But I wonder why they always do that in this franchise? Why do they often use a discriminated ethnic or racial group as a template and why do they choose to portray them in a very stereotypical way? They could have designed this people very differently very easily. Who's next? Gypsies? Pygmy peoples? Sámi? Eurasian nomads aka "horse people"? It doesn't really bother me though. (I'm not a snowflake and I realize that fiction is different from reality). This was mostly an academic remark. But I think, it was worth to be mentioned. Instead, very interestingly though, the show is (totally unfairly) criticized by some for including (as in: inclusion) black actors. Really? It makes you think whether "our" value system is well calibrated.
PS: I knew it. Yolandi Visser is one of these weird, otherworldly, pale elves. These guys are elves, right?

Best episode ever because lightsaber fight !
Seriously ?! It was in parts better but it couldn't save the show as a whole.
OK, I admit I was wrong and there was another match between them. And it was better then the first. But no stupid writing ? Why did Vader just leave Obi-Wan under the rocks ? He couldn't feel he was still alive ? Well, he couldn't feel him sneaking up behind him, couldn't he ? But he knew he was on the little ship. And if that is how it went down why didn't Obi-Wan just kill Vader right there? Could have saved the galaxy lots of trouble. He clearly had accepted that Anakin was gone, he even called him "Darth" (which by the way is wrong because that's a title, the name would be Vader). And they now established that the Empire, and Vader, knew all the time that Kenobi was alive and where he was.
Luke having no memory of being chased in the night by a lady with a crimson lightsaber ? OK, maybe it's one of those selected memory losses.
Reva standing on the surface of Tattoine after taking a lightsaber in her guts just mere hours before ? How is that not convinient writing ? And wanna bet we see her again? Maybe in a spin-off?
Qui-Gon appearing at the end was nice but ultimately useless. This final episode was just ticking up boxes to preserve canon but it also creates logical errors by doing so. And there was never any danger towards the characters.
Hindsight is always 20/20 but after watching what I had high hopes for, I can only say it would have been better it didn't happen.

@finfan The episode was nice, for me in almost every way. I can not ignore some bad points about some episodes, but I generally enjoyed the series.
One issue I have with the fight. It was nice, even with shaky cameras you know I don't like, but there is a dialogue in ROTJ which is very important:
Luke: "Come with me"
Vader: "Obi Wan once thought as you do"
There is no Obi Wan trying to bring Vader to the light, even after seeing the face of Anakin again. I wanted the fight to end with Obi Wan believing that Vader could turn to the light again... maybe having a vision of the future where Anakin kills the Emperor. That would have been a nice explanation for Kenobi to leave Vader\Anakin to his destiny, like he's leaving Luke to his destiny, without forcing the training of the boy.
Even Luke, after trying and thinking he failed, says "Then my father is truly dead". Like Obi Wan about Anakin.
But I guess it would be a problem with Obi Wan in Episode VI where he says "(Vader) is more a machine than a man".
I also think it is a nice recurring motif to leave each other, in a conscious way or not, almost dying, avoiding to give the final strike.
Calling him Darth is probably a reference to A New Hope, where Kenobi calls Vader like that.
I wish Vader would've killed her. She's just a weak character. Even a ten year old kid is not intimidated by her. It should have been Vader chasing Obi-Wan from the beginning if it is that much of a personal thing for him. The story could have been so much better.
I'll admit, this episode was rather weak. Convenient writing and all in all a remake of Obi-Wan on the death star. No real suspense since the only character that could have died is Tala.
loading replies
Vader would have killed her in that scenario, he wouldn’t have waited.
I'm not sure what's missing, but these episodes just feel off. I know it's not good to compare, but I'll do it anyway, The Mandalorian felt exciting and like the Star Wars Universe was filled with characters... This show feels like everything is stale and if it didn't have the nostalgia of Obi and Vader I don't think anyone would be interested.
This episode had some nice bits. The scenes with the bodies Obi found was very intriguing. That was the only thing I liked. They really did skip Obi getting better and it was glossed over like months had past but I believe it was days. I can't imagine that The Mandalorian would have done it this way.
I'm really losing interest and hoping that something happens soon to make this worth the wait.
loading replies
@walgeon agreed 100%. The part where Obi-Wan found the bodies was the only even remotely interesting or good part of this episode. I was so sure he was about to find the body of some Jedi he knew from the past, but nope. This is one of the most generic sci-fi shows I've ever seen, with constant cliches, very formulaic, and it is by far the most child-friendly live-action Star Wars we've had. Some of the episodes have been alright and had their moments, but overall, this is not the show that they seemed to be promising us in the advertising. It was made out that this entire show was going to be about exploring Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship. Instead of that, or anything even remotely close to resembling that, we've got Leia: A Star Wars Story, with Reva having a way bigger part in the show than Vader. I am beyond disappointed with how this show has gone so far.
Well, I kind of liked generally this episode because Burnam was much less on the screen, the visual are really nice, there is action, and less cringy scene (but still some) than the previous.
But honestly, the ending plot is really unimpressive, so obvious, and so flat. Nothing really happen at all.
Control that as reach so much power, knowledge and consciousness, is SO DUMB and 'die' in such a stupid way. I am impressed by how stupid the AI strategy was. When Leeland died, I really felt like "wow this is it? really ?".
Also, I don't know how strong are ships in Star Trek, but I am pretty sure that 2 sciences ships (Discovery and Enterprise are not battle ship right?) against 10+ section 31 ships that are made for combat + a lot of kamikaze drones... well, those 2 ships shield shouldn't last 1 hours+ and still be at over 30%.
And finally, Control is an AI, so it's literally everywhere. It kind of took control of Leeland with 'nanobot' but Control is not depended on Leeland to survive, Leeland is just part of control. I don't see how the show considered that Control is only Leeland, and without him the other ship can't be controlled (I remember they say that at some point). Also, while Leeland is on Discovery (with the stupidest reaction that stupid human would follow), how is it possible that the other ships with 10+ ships can't scan Burnam and target her. instead she just fly away in the most indiscreet way and be completely safe.
Anyway, the show ended, it was a decent time filler, but yes, I am not that moved by this Star Trek. I would resume this last episode as some kind of Star Wars TheForce Awaken, everybody knew the plot, nothing impressive happens, but the visual are good.

@finfan Wouldn't surprise me if that was their reasoning. I already don't like the show, but it might help if I was able to see what was going on.
I'm getting really worried. This season is nothing what I hoped it would be. And while I could easily set that aside as a case of having to much expectations, this marks the first time I was bored watching an episode of this show.
The parts with Pershing are way too long. That was a completely different show. Not that it isn't interesting to see how the New Republic deals with Empire remnants. But it was also too easy to see through. Or is there any doubt why she did what she did ? In any case, I don't think it pratically warrants a whole episode for that part of the story. The really interesting parts this season are a side story so far.
At this point I'd take about 10 minutes fom each episode and skip the rest.loading replies
@finfan I might be dense, but I honestly haven't got a clue why she did that stuff, or who she might be working for. I suspect we'll learn more eventually, but at this point it feels like best bet is that she's punishing the people who failed Gideon?
That Security Force is probably good Stormtrooper material.
Anyway, still slow burning. The whole first three episodes released today are rather on long pilot movie I guess. Let's see how that movie ends.

@finfan many justified points here which I don't want to discredit. But Obi Wan calls Vader "Darth" in A New Hope as well. It feels weird to hear after having watched the prequels but "Darth" as a title was established way after Darth Vader being named. I personally always imagine Obi Wan saying the title in kind of a sarcastic, derogatory way to make it fit.
I think Hemmer will become my favorite charachter on this show. Hopefully we'll see more of him.

You want my honest opinion ?
- A boring, uninteresting story taken right out of a Bond movie. Shoehorned in between events we've already seen.
- Humor that isn't the least bit funny.
- About 45 minutes too long. All the family reunion stuff did absolutely nothing for me.
- Generic action scenes with at times below average looking CGI
- Zero emotional investement
- Hilarious Russian accentsConclusion: dissapointing

@finfan 2 months after watching it.. I can't even tell you how it ended. I don't remember! That's how boring it was.
Well, @balazs955 inspired me to leave a comment that this episode is just another disappointment. >70% of this episode was full of pathos and preceding weeping, terribly written and acted as (almost) always when STD gets emotional. What makes this even more absurd is that half of the weeping was pointless, as most of the crew decides to join the mission at the end.

@balazs955 I think positive as well as negative criticism have their place under every single episode. How sad would it be if all the bad reviews vanish after the first episode. This here now at least means they keep watching, and see if anything gets better. That being said, I still enjoy the series over all, even if it is hard to not be distracted by its many flaws.

@ahmedhamdy90 again, I agree with you, my man! This episode was, indeed, beautifully executed and it's my favourite episode of the season, so far. Heck, it's already one of my favourite episodes from this show!
In an otherwise fantastic series, this episode is hamstrung by the clumsy narrative and hamfisted direction, pointedly marked by the jarring shift to voice over commenting that will remain an annoying element of the rest of the series. As it is also essentially redundant to its predecessor, I recommend skipping straight from the hauntingly superb episode 6 to episode 8.

@kopischke not sure we watched the same thing. this was an absolutely haunting episode. a must-watch.
Don't get me wrong, I still like to watch the show a lot. But they are dragging this whole thing out too much.
It's clear no one can do anything against Homelander until the last episode. We had another two tries here and at least one of them was telegraphed in advance. Is this now going to continue ?
Someone told me that in the comics The Boys all have powers. Maybe it works when you do that from the start, but it doesn't work here. I was rooting for them because they were the underdogs but with powers they become the same arrogant f**** as the Supes. Heck, even worse then some.
As for the story: Soldier Boy is the weapon, he can take away each ones powers so it seems. Now they will have to find a way to convince him to fight on their side. With the rift, or better canyon, opening up between them, it will be interesting to see how this is mended.
Still amazingly great acting and things like the dildo-fight are what sets this way up from anything else on right now.
loading replies
@finfan I'm pretty sure that the whole point. Hughie with powers is more dangerous than Butcher. He is as insecure as Homelander. At least it won't be permanent solution unlike in the comics. So they probably go to status quo after this season.
I agree the show choose the right idea by avoiding compound V for so long. It doesn't work so well with the powers in my opinion.
OK, now I am lost a bit. On the one side we learn what happened and why. And that she in fact didn't steal Visions body but re-created him. I get that. But why did it MAKE her The Scarlett Witch ? Wasn't she always ?
loading replies
@finfan in comics, since the recent retcon of 2015/2016, the Scarlet Witch is a title, there was Scarlet Witches before Wanda. In the MCU, she had no superhero name before today. In the comics, her mother was Scarlet Witch before her, and there was many Scarlet Witches before that. And Scarlet Witch is not a mutant in the comics and Magneto is not her father. All that since the retcon of 2015/2016.
I certainly enjoyed the coming together of Picard, Riker and Troi. Those were great scenes. At the same time it showed me again I care less about the new characters. And how is this for people who don't know TNG ?
The revelation that Jurati was planted was no surprise as I suspected that from the beginning. A Vulcan forcing a mind meld was a surprise and I wonder where the information about that future comes from. Was it just a trick to lure Jurati in ? Or will there be some form of time travel involved ? I would have hoped Jurati would kill herself instead of just putting her into a coma.
And if I could make a guess in general, I think Picard is going to die at the end of the show. Whenever that may be.loading replies
@finfan Getting to know and care about the characters was something that the nice long seasons of Trek did well. As I said in my own comment I liked the little Riker girl better than the 3 still on the ship. I kind of like Soji but she was getting on my nerves a bit episode.
Mediocre show, Rosario is awful as Ahsoka and Winstead doesn't fit Hera Syndulla at all. Story is very predictable unfortunately.. I was so looking forward to this, dissapointed.

@essenslug why not? Of course people can. Not everything needs a deep analysis and I'm actually tired of the "you have to stick with it, it's getting better after episode xx/season whatnot/you can't have an opinion after 1-2-3 episodes"
I always found those kind of arguments pretty stupid.
This is not the way... this is the destination. This is new-generation Star Wars at its finest.
David Filoni is living his best life.
Can you imagine if Filoni had been in charge of Obi-Wan? Maybe they would have bothered to de-age Hayden that time.
I cannot wait to see the reactions to this one (Kyle Katarn is going to have a conniption fit), and I cannot wait to laugh at all the low ratings and negative comments. Wonder what straws they're going to grasp at this time...
Edit: Personal attacks it is. :expressionless:

@aeronmelon It's really interesting that your comment praising this episode have no mention of anything about the story, other than they deaged an actor. Instead the bulk of it is about strawmaning everyone who dare to criticize it.
Tells a lot about the quality of the story of the episode and the biases of the people praising it. :)
The action sequence was running a bit long but otherwise another solid episode.
I'm surprised there wasn't another way to relieve the steam pressure. Was that just a story tool to generate tension? You would think the builders would incorporate a way to make repairs in case they are needed. Otherwise they were either pretty sure the generator would run forever or they never anticipated it runs so long. Weird.
Did you notice the moment they switched to the back-up the screen showed a healthy, green environment outside ? No coincidence I say.
Bernard is hiding something, he is a much more important player in the tale. Unfortunately I was sure the moment the major opened up to the deputy her clock was running out.loading replies
@finfan The tension building part was how even though Juliette was spraying the water which immediately cooled down the steam it somehow doesn't continue working later on even though all the water she's spraying is still exactly the same as before, plus when they released the steam how quickly the pressure dropped but how slowly the turbine accelerated means they could've just released steam in bursts to keep the pressure steady, or even jam the turbine while the steam is open just a crack, etc. But remember, this has never been done, so nobody had any training, and nobody was thinking clearly either (so I'll forgive the fact Juliette told her shadow that he knows what to do, even though neither of them have ever touched that part of the generator before lol)
One thing is for sure: it was f***ing tense.

That was a convenient way to solve the Darksaber issue. A bit too convenient if you'd ask me. But those final scenes couldn't safe the episode from basically just being a constructed, unessessary and boring sub plot to provide guest roles for some well known names. And they were not even great characters. With only eight episodes per season they really should not waste time on those things.
The one question this episode raised for me is: could have been Mandalorians that freed Gideon after all if so many of them became mercenaries ?

@finfan Hi! I decided to reply to the comment of this episode since it's the last aired so far, talking about the previous one too and the state of the series.
It was great to see some of the familiar characters from the series again. However, I'm still not convinced about the return of Grogu. I can't quite tell if it was a marketing decision or if it's actually important to the story. I'm afraid that it may have been reintroduced simply for the sake of ratings, although I do love the character and I'm happy to see him back. Nevertheless, I think it would have been beneficial for the series to have at least one season without him so that it could evolve on its own, especially with such great supporting characters. This would have allowed Grogu to train and become more powerful in the Force.
As for Din Dijarin, I also think that it's a step backward for his character to hide his face again. Removing his mask was an evolution of his character, and hiding it again feels like a regression. When I see Din, I don't see Pedro Pascal behind the mask, but rather a stunt double, and I wonder if the reason for hiding his face again is due to availability issues with the actor.
Overall, I've enjoyed the episodes so far. I love the evolution of Bo Katan's character, and I don't mind that the story focuses on her at times as it helps to evolve the series in a way that I love. While some additional character introductions may slow down the story, I do appreciate the attention to detail in the Star Wars universe. I particularly enjoyed the episode dedicated to Dr. Pershing, and I was happy to see him again, even though his demise was unfortunate.
One thing that I'm not a fan of is the New Republic. I feel that their current path is not in line with what I imagine Leia Organa's politics to be. This is not a critique of the series, but rather an interesting aspect that I'd like to see explored more. In fact, I think that the state of uncertainty in the galaxy and the reorganization of the New Republic would have been an interesting backdrop for Episodes 7, 8, and 9. It would have been fascinating to see how smugglers, pirates, and remnants of the old Empire navigated through this period, rather than just focusing on the First Order, which was already a powerful entity.
I apologize for the lengthy message, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the recent episodes. Let me know what you think!
