Picture Book

It is interesting to find out what sort of techniques artists use to illustrate children's picture books. Visit your local library and take a look at the illustrations by artists such as Eric Carle, Jeannie Baker, and John Birmingham. You will see interesting use of different collage materials, torn paper, simple printing, painting and drawing. Try illustrating your own book. Photographs of family members and familiar objects also can provide a great foundation for a told story or picture book to share with a younger child.

Colour Mixing

Find out what new colours you can create by experimenting with the primary colours, red, blue and yellow.

Try two colours first. Edicol dyes with water can create beautiful secondary colours.

Mix a ¼ teaspoon of edicol dye with a third cup of water to make water paint.

Pattern Making

Using paints, textas or crayons find out the different patterns you can make using lines and dots and swirls.

Take a look around your house, yard or neighbourhood and see if you can see more stripy patterns, spotty patterns or swirls.
