Just watched the unaired pilot (Vimeo release) & this looks likely to have been a very dark, black comedy series. Would have been good to use Channel 4 digital platform to gauge viewer interest in the comedy pilot. [Pilot episode - 7/10]
Season is shaping up quite well. Expanding cast of characters backed by good acting & a well shot chase sequence.
Interesting reboot take on Magnum P.I. Good mix of actors with nice characterization; but will it hold up? Action sequences were well executed & hopefully will not be overused.
30 years on we get the lowdown on making Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. It's an interesting collection of stories & interviews, revealing in many ways.
[review of Director's Commentary with Wakefield Poole]
An interesting & informative commentary on what is considered an early classic in gay porn. (The film is referenced in the 1st season of The Deuce TV show) The film consists of 3 linked sections which are filmed by just the director with no supplemental lighting or sound recording. This gives a very natural visual quality, unlike similar period straight porn.
(The film has a music soundtrack, but in my opinion the director's commentary is preferable.)
Three beautifully filmed shorts with a shoe link. The first & last scenes exquisitely showcase how the intimacy of sex can be captured. Jennifer Lyon Bell is clearly an easy first choice should Hollywood wish to bring sex back into the cinema.
Attention to detail is brilliant as ever .... except for the absence of any film in Abby's camera at Coney Island!
Joyously daft film. So many nods to 70s cinema, Blaxploitation & Kung Fu movies. Excellent soundtrack rounds off a good little picture.
Truck Turner is the Los Angeles Blaxploitation film to rival New York's Shaft. Early 1970s neighborhood streets never looked as grimy, scuzzy & lived in. The film fizzes with dynamic camera motion that drives the tension of chases, fights & shootouts. When we know the name of our heroes pet (Francis) then we know we're getting a gut-punch sometime.
An engaging look at a quirky Sussex family. Hypnotic in visuals & soothing in soundscape. Leaves the modern viewer wondering "What happened to them in the ensuing 40+ years?"
Watched as a double-bill with American Graffiti (with which comparisons are frequently drawn. The two films are tonally comparable, with similar "slice-of-life; one-night; educational-transition" settings) Dazed & Confused edges above in terms of the overall story. The music is well chosen & embedded in the scenes without the feeling of a tacked on greatest hits type soundtrack mélange. Some great early performances by actors who blossomed in the ensuing years makes this a treat of a movie!
Watching in September 2017 some of the things in the script seem startlingly prophetic & pertinent. Christopher Walken is, as always, a great cast as Tom Dobbs manager & the tenderness that Robin Williams conveyed in the hospital scenes remind us that among the crazy laughs was a great actor.
Quite the accomplishment a film about making a porno with NO nudity. Lightly amusing in the way of many 70's comedy films.
Captivated by the storyline, impressed by the period set dressing too. Let down by the assertion that Polaroid 600 series film would even fit in an SX-70 (Polaroid LOVED having different film sizes!)
Worth sticking with; even if you find the character of Detective Hollerenshaw as annoying as I did, rest assured it's 'resolved' in the end. Who could deny Kath anything?
Interesting collection of film & recollection of the conflict. From our perspective it is given further poignancy by the next conflict being just a few years away, whilst war was beginning in Spain.
An interesting film documenting the progress of the History Of Sex art project & exhibition. Poor sound (& the nature of the artists oeuvre) could make for a difficult watch for non-fans of Andres Serrano's work!
The film is better than the trailer suggests (a bit baggy with the pacing though) with plenty of humour & heart.
An impressive demonstration of art coupled with sound & music. Don't expect a narrative as that is NOT what this short film is about.
Dystopian near future & the traditional bleak outlands. Kudos all round for the location finding which is setting for a slow unfolding plot. Diverting television as this would probably not get made in an English speaking country.
So much running, running, running.
