ReLIFE

Mother of God... This was so f'n good. I was planning on just watching the first episode for kicks today and getting to studying for my Summer Final Exams, but I ended up marathoning all 13 episodes in one night. Holy shit. Arata is the f'n man and all the chicks in this series are soooooooo cute. Honestly, I could ship any of them. The ending is a bit inconclusive but the manga is still ongoing so I can give it a pass as I pray for a second season/OVA/anything more. Anyway, manga continuation here I come!!!

My Hero Academia: 1x04 Start Line

I've liked the pace of the anime so far even though it may definitely be a bit on the slow side. As a manga reader, I really think that BONES has done a phenomenal job in animating this series and adding even more emotion and impact to important climactic scenes. While the manga is also top-notch in building up these climaxes and emotions, the anime has definitely taken it to another level by using more subtle pacing and incorporating a perfect soundtrack (I will get the OST the second it is released). I (almost...) got teared up again in this episode at the end of All Might's message to Izuku.

If this isn't picked up for a second season, I will rage so hard...

ERASED: 1x03 Birthmark

Damn. That was a powerful episode. Kayo's mother is just awful. I had some "rage" moments during this one with the abuse scenes that had me at "Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin" levels. While I initially felt that Satoru wasn't doing enough for Kayo, that ending scene swayed me. Can't wait for the next one and more twists to be unveiled.

Redline

Damn, Redline was one epic movie. I can't believe it took me so long to check this out. The animation is out of this world (those 7 years of production did not go to waste) and the whole movie just oozes style. I'm not even a fan of racing but this had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Also, that OST was just bumpin'. I'm still listening to REDLINE DAY (feat. Rob Laufer) from the credits as we speak (click below). Madhouse can do no wrong.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part III: Rebellion

Man. Mind. Blown. This was one epic movie. SHAFT took this in a completely different direction than I originally anticipated. This sequel to the series (technically the movies if you listen to the creators) really delves into our favorite magical characters but the real star of this is Homura without a doubt. I truly realized (after reading explanations online of course) the extent of her pain, suffering and love that she went through in order to "save" Madoka. She truly develops and transforms as a character throughout this movie into someone even I didn't anticipate at all.

The animation, style and action are spectacular as always with this being a SHAFT production. While I thought that the first 30 minutes of the movie were a bit slow, shit immediately got crazy after that. And that ending... You'll have to see it for yourself. There were definitely some pretty confusing parts of this movie but after taking it all in (and some outside guidance), everything really does fit together and creates a fitting sequel to the series. I liken this as the End of Evangelion for the Madoka series. Now, I'm craving for some more magical girls goodness.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Well this was definitely better than the first Hobbit film as there was no hour long goblin chase scene. I found the movie to be pretty enjoyable particularly the dynamic scenes between Smaug and Bilbo, and the extended character development of Bilbo and Thorin. The action was great fun although drawn out and unrealistic/ridiculous at times (like all Peter Jackson films). Someone just has to get Peter Jackson a damn editor already. I honestly don't know what other scenes he could possibly add on to a Special Edition version (but I know that he probably has a million). Still, I'll be ready for my final trip back to Middle Earth next year.

Elfen Lied

This is an absolutely fantastic anime that tackles very mature and graphic themes, such as discrimination, abandonment, and just pure suffering. I really liked how all these tiny pieces and story lines tied together from the beginning up until the very end (even the OVA). The relationships between the characters and the support that they build for each other from their own miserable experiences and pain are truly remarkable. It shows that good can come out of such horrible things. I will warn that this anime is incredibly graphic (gore, nudity, abuse, etc) but it's there for good reason. The story is well done and the animation does not really show its age. This is a great watch if you're in the mood for a dark anime.

Hyouka

This is another masterpiece done by Kyoto Animation. Can they do no wrong? It's a great slice-of-life school anime with a good mix of mystery, drama and a bit of romance (wish there was a bit more personally). I really loved how this series was very realistic in its scenarios, drama and character development which really helped me fall in love with the charming characters even more. Obviously, the art, animation and music are off the charts too. I just pray that there is a second season or movie to tie up the ending (beautifully done but I need my romantic conclusions!!).

Jujutsu Kaisen: 1x12 To You, Someday

Incredible episode!! This was definitely the best episode of the entire first cour. Unfortunately it was also beyond sad and heartbreaking at times too. Fantastic animation and a great job by MAPPA of bringing this entire sequence to life.

Dororo: 1x24 Dororo and Hyakkimaru

Solid ending. Nothing too amazing but it was pretty good nonetheless. The show overall was pretty solid. The start of the show was fantastic but it kind of lost steam from there on. It definitely had some slow parts and got off track a bit in the second cour, but it finished up relatively strong enough. Not sure that it ever lived up to the massive hype that was behind it early on. Too bad we never got that perfect Dororo x Hyakkimaru ending. Other than for this tiny glimpse of "grownup" Dororo...

Mirai

Just watched Mamoru Hosoda's new film Mirai and enjoyed it a decent amount. Beautifully made film with a lot of heart-warming themes, a very cool future/past interweaving dynamic and good development. Unfortunately, the biggest problem with this film is that it was kind of boring. No matter the amount of other great elements in a movie, if it is not entertaining, it's going to struggle a bit in my mind. I prefer Hosoda's other works to this where there is a bit of a more over-arching plot and driving story arch. Still, this is a nice movie to watch especially with your family.

Keijo!!!!!!!!

This show was a mASSterpiece. No other words could possibly describe the glory that is Keijo!!!!!! This is only series that has made me seriously reconsider converting to an ASS-man (other than Prison School). That alone should cement this series in the Top 5 rankings of all-time.

Season 2 when?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: 3x37 Crazy D (Diamond) Is Unbreakable (1)

Mofo. Hot diggity damn. Just caught up after being stuck at like Episode 29ish for the longest time. The past few episodes have been fantastic and the final showdown with Kira is already swagging out quite hard. I gotta give some props to Hayato for becoming an MVP out of nowhere. I thought he was just a bitchy emo kid (with a tiny animated penis) in the beginning, but he has become a BOSS. Can't wait for the finish.

Mob Psycho 100: 1x08 The Older Brother Bows ~Destructive Intent~

Ok. I'll admit. That was a SICK fight.

One that would make OPM quite proud. I know that we've now circled back to familiar shounen territory going up against the traditional big baddies, but damn that psychic fighting was lit. Shigeo is about to rekt some fools in the next episodes.

My Hero Academia: 1x01 Izuku Midoriya: Origin

This was a pretty solid and fun introduction into the world of "My Hero Academia". I particularly liked how well Izuku's past was fleshed out here. While it did start pretty slow (I've heard the same thing about the manga), I'm excited to see what BONES will do with the material here. The quirky art definitely grew on me as I watched this episode (especially after dat fanservice "ass"). I'm really looking forward to what next week will bring.

Interstellar

I finally got around to watching Interstellar after all this time last night and boy... I thought that the movie was just fantastic. I'm kind of baffled at why there is so much hate for the movie. There are maybe a couple of plot holes and inconsistencies here and there while some things go beyond the scope of "believable science" but damn if it isn't one hell of an enjoyable movie.

It's definitely on the long side but I was so engrossed throughout the entire movie that I just didn't care. Great performances by the McCounaghey and Anne Hathaway in this one along with a fantastic soundtrack. Don't listen to all the hate and watch it if you're up for one hell of an adventure (albeit a long one).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Just came back from the first official showing. My mind was officially blown / "awoken". Simply amazing. Best movie experience that I've been to in a long time (ago in a galaxy far, far away). This is what a Star Wars movie is supposed to be like.

The fusion of the new cast and the old was masterfully done and I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie not knowing what was coming next. Adam Driver and Daisey Ridley absolutely stole the show in this one but I honestly ending up loving all the new characters. The only downside is that I have to wait until 2017 & 2019 to complete this "new" adventure. I am contemplating if I should freeze myself in carbonite to shorten the wait...

I may or may not be watching this a few more times in the coming weeks (while doing my little dance)...

The Phil-Carrol dynamic is just pure gold. I could feel the cringe each time. It was glorious.

And I'm so happy that they didn't waste too much time into introducing January Jones at the end of this episode. The next one is going to be EPIC especially with that little preview. We all knew the "dilemma" was coming and it looks spectacular.

I loved the scene between Tsubaki and Kousei. She finally took the first step. And just when you thought that the death flags couldn't possibly increase, A-1 stepped up their game once again. RIP Neko-chan.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku: 1x01 Narumi and Hirotaka Meets Again, and...

Just watched the first episode of this series and wow... I definitely enjoyed this a lot. Love the characters of Narumi and Hirotaka and how things get going right off the bat at the end of the first episode. I can envision quite a bit of shenanigans ensuing with these two protagonists and the two other secondary characters (Hanako & Tarou). Otaku love is always a gold mine!

Overlord: 2x13 The Ultimate Trump Card

Wow. Well that sucked even more than I was expecting for a season finale, and I had low expectations in the first place with how disappointing this entire second season has been. I can maybe guess it was probably better in the LN, but all the arcs in this second season were pretty bland to begin with story-wise. I don't see how they would be that much better in the novels. I love isekai light novels but Overlord is definitely one series that I never really liked too much (even the first anime season), and I will definitely not be reading the LN any time soon.

As for the third season, I'll probably still watch it when it airs in the summer as 20 minutes a week for 13 episodes isn't that much time. Still, I'm definitely not going to invest any more time in this series than that though.

The great "Archie" getting a live-action adaptation?!?! THERE IS A GOD!!! If it is anything like the new Archie comic reboot (which is fantastic and a must-read), then I will be hooked. All I know is that one can never have enough Betty and Veronica, that's for sure... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

EDIT: Well, after watching the first episode of Riverdale, I don't quite know what to think of it all yet. Riverdale seems to be more heavily influenced by the CW's style turning this into more of a darker mystery driven show than I had been anticipating. We'll see how everything shakes out as the first episode already had its hands full just introducing the myriad of characters here. I really liked what was done in the recent Archie comic reboot but perhaps this mystery-story based approach is better suited for TV vs the lighter affair of the comics.

Also, we need more Jughead!!

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: 3x39 Goodbye, Morioh – The Heart of Gold

"What a beautiful duwang."

Amazing ending to an amazing season/Part of JoJo. "Part 4 - Diamond Is Unbreakable" has probably been my favorite main arc so far in the JoJo-verse due to many different factors. I loved how they varied up the Stand encounters a lot more this time around vs Stardust and Diamond had a much more vibrant and interesting story/setting. Josuke was also a fantastic new MC that harkened more back to the Joseph Joestar that I loved from Part 2. But, most importantly, Kira was just an amazing and well-fleshed out villain. Better than Dio, I daresay...

Please bring us Part 5 ASAP!!

I am wood.

Love DAT LOOK from Eraser Head!! It is literally a sick look ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm very pleased with BONES's adaptation so far. They've really added a level of emotion and energy to each episode that takes the manga's original material to the next level. Without a doubt, the OST and its effective use at just the right times make the climaxes of each episode really resonate. Super pumped for the next episode as we get the legendary Bakugo vs Izuku showdown that we've been waiting for.

Meh. This episode definitely felt a built rushed and apparently diverted quite a bit from the manga cutting out scenes of Airi and skimping on Yashiro sensei's flashback (I may have to read this last part). While I'm disappointed by Kayo marrying Hiromi (not a complete NTR), their kid was cute so I can't be angry. I'm more concerned with the Airi parts that were cut out and Yashiro's motive. It seems that the anime may be going with a bit more of an anime original ending. I'm hoping that the payoff and final confrontation is better in the final episode as this one was a bit of a let down.
