I am a HUUUUUUUGGGEE MORTAL KOMBAT fan and I have never thought they have done a good film (except Scorpions Revenge), but this film is so close to being the perfect Mortal Kombat film but a few things let it down.
So let's start with the good, I actually think all of the castings is perfect as I felt everyone embodied their characters perfectly with the standouts being Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Mehcad Brooks (Jax) and the best being Josh Lawson (Kano) who just plays Kano in such a way that he makes he almost makes scenes that can be generic even better with his great one-liners and great comedic but scum bag timing. Also, you can see the passion for the franchise from the cast and crew because they nail references and also many different things like fatalities which feel sooooo good when it happens.
Now here is where I say the negative, whoever edited this film needs to be supervised better because some of the scenes are edited so poorly but especially the fight scenes which you can see they shot the actions but they use quick cuts which ruin some of the fights in the film. Also, though Lewis Tan (Cole Young) grew on me I feel like it would have been easier to use a character from the franchise already though he wasn't bad in the film just a little bit generic and they spend too much time on him and not enough on the other characters like Scorpion who you would think according to the trailer he would be in it more.
Anyway, if you are a Mortal Kombat fan I feel like you will enjoy it and I give it a 7/10 because they have shown they care about the fans but as a film, it isn't great and I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't a Mortal Kombat fan.
Dumb fun. You can tell how the cast and crew are fans of the property. This is also targeted at fans, since they don't really try to explain things. This definitely requires you to check the game wiki (or to have played a ton) to understand what's going on.
Overall, the movie was kinda bad. It has some good easter eggs (tho some of them are nonsense), but also too many cheesy-one liners noding the games (you know, "flawless victory", "fatality", "finish him"), kinda force them into it just to look cool. The acting was meh (except for Sanada, who seems the only one who can actually act); the story was rushed and without too much development. I liked they included some less-known characters like Reiko, Kabal and Nitara. The only cool thing is that the keep their promise on the bloody/gore side, so at least we had that. No more than a 5 over 10
Better than all the others. This was great, a lil bit of fan service and Easter eggs but its a common almost a must nowadays. Nothing felt ridiculous or out of place, this is a great reboot. I hope the next installments just get better.
As an old old fan of the game,i did enjoy this movie, the special effects especially the fatalities..also it has a lot of characters from the game which is a delight for the fans to see
Underrated
One of the best vampire movies ever!
I love anthologies so here's hoping subsequent episodes are as well done as this was. I don't like having to rate an episode overall when it contains two stories but I've always liked the Stephen King short "Grey Matter" and this interpretation seems very faithful and the monster that Richie becomes is neat. The second story with the little girl and her haunted doll house is cute. The child actress is really good and there's some suspense in this little tale.
A more family friendly Max film. That is pretty much Max and Peter Pan’s Lost Boys teaming up. The last action scene does at least feel like Mad Max.
I find the film entertaining. Even if the middle doesn’t make much sense. With Max being mistaken for a pilot and worshipped by a young tribe.
I love the film though since with Tina Turner in the movie and doing the soundtrack. The movie feels more pure 80’s than the other films. Acting wise, I have seen people say she can’t act. I think she makes her villain character likable. What she has to do in the movie, she does quite fine.
It is weird that Bruce Spence is playing a pilot but not the same character as he did in Road Warrior. It should have just been the same guy.
There’s too much complaints that this isn’t enough like the others. I would dare say there’s more plot to this than Fury Road had. The movie smartly builds it’s way up to the usual Mad Max style car chase scene.
Sadly the critics got this movie better than normal viewers. It is still a post apocalyptic film. Still very much a Mad Max film, stop whining.
Good. You need a sense of humour for this one. Boring? I found the first Mad Max more boring.
Of course the picky people on this site who love throwing stuff a 1 out of 10 or 2 out of 10. Threw this either a 1 out of 10 and 2 out of 10 lol.
Come on, this isn’t a Happy Madison movie or a bad a spoof movie noir is half the stuff you hate on here.
I like comedy horror movies that throw in stuff like being stuck in a Horror movie, living the same day over and over again or switching bodies. Now there’s a time travel horror movie, count me in.
This captures how an overly privileged child of this generation would react to being stuck in the 80’s. Yes gym class dodgeball was pretty much like that lol.
This was decent fun, in a similar vein to Happy Death Day and The Final Girl. The joke gets a little long in the tooth after a while but it never stops being enjoyable and lighthearted. Good fun, and I like this trend of taking older film premises and putting a horror spin on them. If Happy Death Day was the horrification of Groundhog Day, this is the horrification of Back to the Future. Not bad at all.
Okay so this was definitely a very fun and enjoyable slasher movie, but seriously… the way I would have just peaced out of there so quick if I were Jamie and let them all die cus they genuinely sucked so much at first:sob::sob:
In the end I really loved the parents though, so I’m happy she saved her mom this way <3
Let's start by saying this season fixes a few of my issues with S41. Overwhelming amount of advantages is improved despite still all basically flopping. The winner, despite not being a "great" winner, actually got a good edit. As with S41, this will likely not be a season I revisit any time soon because it lacked a lot of the spice that great Survivor brings. Most of the season was easily predictable, despite the cast being quite good. To me, it seemed that at every turn, the least exciting outcome is what continued to happen, over and over again. As with S41, I look forward to seeing several faces from this cast on a different season (hopefully once production sheds a bunch of the needless BS).
Rating: 7.5/10
"survivor has changed". survivor has always been a microcosm of society. the reason you are seeing more comments making you uncomfortable is because more marginalised people are cast and speak up, and society is becoming more aware. survivor has always brought life into the game. but as Maryanne så eloquently said: we all bring burdens and privileges into the game, but some bring heavier burdens. you might not like it, but this has always been part of survivor.
it's always funny seeing how grown people throw such childish tantrums in the comments over the fact that a tv show has decided they would rather be inclusive and move with the times than being stuck in the last millenium. no-one is making saying "guys" illegal lmao calm down
A misunderstood masterpiece. I laughed so hard it hurt to breathe. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen and yet I want more.
Better than the last 6 movies combined.
Could have used some more blood though.
The Cenobite designs are amazing, especially Jamie Clayton as Pinhead. This version of the Pinhead goes well with the sexless look from the novella. Blood and gore are done quite well; they never felt gratuitous. The protagonists, on the other hand, were not quite as great. Similar characters have been done countless times before... in much better ways. So yeah.
The story was faithful to the idea from the novella and the first two movies. I liked the callbacks and the homages. It's a worthy spiritual successor to the first two movies.
I found this really a very good reboot.
Im not an expert in movies, i can imagine some or even many die hard hellraiser fans will not be satisfied, but to me i find this succesfully done. They did their best. Thats for sure.
I've been looking forward to this since it was announced and had just rewatched the original recently. I'm the target demographic and really enjoyed this. Was it perfect? No? Would I penalize it more if it wasn't such a beloved franchise? Yes. The Cenobites and Pinhead scenes were marvelous. Costume design A+. I was never scared, but more in love w the whole aesthetic and some of the CGI choices were superb. It's probably a 6/10 movie, but one that I gladly give a 7.5. I thoroughly enjoyed it far more than the average fan would.
"Accept the pain you have wrought. Greater delights await. We wish to see you proceed."
Well, it looks like I am the odd one out here, but I liked the new Hellraiser much more than the original. It makes the wise choice of not copying too much of the original by being less erotic but a much darker version. The puzzle box acts like a puzzle box rather than a genie lamp, where one rub summons the cenobites.
I just felt that I got more out of this one.
Rather than the usual leather costumes that the cenobites wear, this time it's another layer of skin to appear as if they are wearing an outfit. The designs looked Gothic, sickly, and fantastic. The leader of the cenobites, the Hell Priest, aka Pinhead; this time played by Jamie Clayton, who I am happy to say brought her spin to the character. I thought she knocked it out of the park. Incredibly creepy and almost hypnotising to watch. You get the impression that these cenobites are more unforgiving and do not play by their own rules.
David Bruckner, in my eyes, is a horror director who can do no wrong. Some dreamy and often other-worldly visuals here, which at times reminded me of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. There has been some talking about remaking ‘Elm Street', and I think Bruckner would do an excellent job judging by this movie.
Also, without spoiling anything, the ending surprised me with how layered, compelling, and mature it was. The scene does not have any action set piece or a bloodbath, but a lot happens. The most striking thing about it is how the worst torture that any human being could experience is to live with the pain of grief.
After so many bad sequels, I think this was really an amazing movie and I had a big hope for the franchise again with this movie! I really loved it!
Loved that it took its time. The atmosphere was excellent, too. A great addition to the Hellraiser universe.
Love it! This is better than the original.
Having (somehow) never seeing any of the other Hellraisers, I went into this with no preconceived idea of what I wanted this movie to be. As a reboot, I didn’t force myself to catch up. I simply went in blind. My blind perspective, it was a solid film worth watching. Gory, brutal, and horror/thriller. This movie makes me want to watch the originals. Was it a little weird? 10000%. Did I miss something not seeing the originals? Surely. But it was good. And happy I could watch it straight to Hulu.
Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching
Just watched and I really like it. i just love the cenobites designs, but i think some just looked like "plastic skin".
The story is "ok" to be fair, the first movie has a better "motivation" to drive the story forward ( the love of a woman to a man who has been taken by the cenobites and was willing to do everything to have him back ). This movie has a similar story, but i think it lacked more development from the brother.
It's EASILY the best one so far after the original one.
and oh... the last scene where Voight is skinned inside the leviathan to become one of the cenobites is awesome! that gives some backstory that I really appreciated. I just wish that the scene was longer and more detailed, like showing other cenobites or a "supreme" cenobite performing the procedures to turn voight into a cenobite.
about the pinhead controversy.. it doesn't affect the movie at all. it was great to see a new design! I don't see the "sex" of the cenobites, just see them as "beings" the body is irrelevant to them, they just want pain extracted from the flesh and that's it. pinhead is a result of that, not a he or she.
Never been a fan of the Hellraiser franchise watched the original a few years back and thought apart from the practical effects and Cenobites it was boring as hell (pun intended). Now this is something that's not boring as hell I had a good time lots of gore, the box makes sense for once and we get to see the Cenobites for more than 2 minutes. The Cenobite costumes are eye candy so much attention to detail I had to put it on pause a few times to get a better look at the costumes. Pinhead looks like a horror icon more than ever! Couldn't see any fails in the CGI they did a good job with that. It feels like a slow burn in some parts but when there's action it's quite effective and entertaining. My favorite scene was what happened in the back of the van.
On the other hand the acting is questionnable, the characters lack depth and the movie went on for 30 mins too long. Also I have to give it to the original the gore and practical effects were on another level it was so much more effective and gross.
Overall this left me satisfied and I would definitely like a sequel.
I did not expect a show about a fungus zombie apocalypse to have both the best gay love story and the best lesbian love story I’ve seen on TV in the last few years… but I’m not complaining
Jeez, the snowflaky reactions of straight white men because not every single episode and narrative centres them - anything deviating from that priority is apparently "woke". Get over yourselves, you egomaniacal bigots.
Anyway, another great episode that nicely expanded Ellie's backstory - bonus points for the Mortal Kombat II appreciation, too :nerd:
