Bones: 4x22 The Double Death of the Dearly Departed

This premise of this episode is so ridiculous it's enjoyable.

Made of Honor

This movie was one of those uncomfortable, generic romantic comedies where the protagonist behaves in a wholly creepy matter to manipulate win the love interest over at the end. The plot is pretty flimsy, the chemistry between the leads almost non-existent. Dempsey does a good job of being charming, but even that isn't enough to save this movie.

I watched this again for the nostalgia value and oh boy, times they have a'changed. Smoking, slapstick and sexism are rampant in this film. Despite this, its still an enjoyable and irreverent film with an iconic Aussie caricature.

American Horror Stories: 2x06 Facelift

Genuinely thought this was going to be a reimagining of the 'Death Becomes Her' film. I enjoyed that it went in a different direction but the end wasn't particularly fulfilling.

I'll be frank. I don't like this movie. I don't know if it's because I associate it with busted recorder solos of "My Heart Will Go On" performed by children or if it the film itself is just too damn long. There is nothing wrong with the film, the first half is a decent romance exploring themes of class and social role, and the second half is an exciting disaster film with a tragic ending. The casting and world building are exquisite. Indeed, Billy Zane does such a good job of being the antagonist Calander Hockley it might have ruined his career. The early 90s can almost be characterised by Leonardo Dicaprio inspiring teenage girls to kill themselves, in this case, purely from Rose's reckless behaviour in her efforts to rescue Jack. Seriously let the damn man on the door if he matters so much, or at least get him a life jacket. Regardless of its plot holes or sheer length, it's still deserving of being a film you have to watch once in your life. Even if you don't like it.

10 Things I Hate About You

The quintessential teen movie, a time-machine to the late 90s, a modernisation of shakespeare and a classic cast of stars. What more could you want.

Shout out to my girl Shangela, cameoing in this episode with possibly some of the worst lipsyncing in a while.

This is almost a Veronica Mars crossover episode with the guest cast.

Born in China

Great for younger audiences and beautiful visuals. This film occasionally feels like it lacks the integrity of other nature documentaries, with heavy handed sound effects, editing and narration. Indeed, at times I wondered if scenes were created with CGI or just with captive animals (tbf I can't find anything on the internet that supports this notion). Its a lovely movie with cute stories, but maybe not to everyone's taste, at least no one ran lemmings of a cliff to make this one.

Dracula 2000

There are some surprisingly well known names in this movie, not least of all the massive Virgin music promo that it seems to be (although full points for symbolism). So late 90s it hurts in places, it lives up to the tagline of it being set fully in the time it was made. Uses a lot of the cliches of modern vampire fiction, I'm looking at you New Orleans. Pieces of this movie are fantastic and the climax is pretty decent but the overall impression is that this movie is terrible.

They've really ramped up Jenny's misuse of English, its nearly too heavy handed to be funny.

The Man in the Iron Mask

This is an enjoyable movie, even if not not technically or critically brilliant. A reasonable modern remake of a classic film, the setting is rich and the plot well paced. It's aged moderately well since 1998 and you can enjoy Titanic-era DiCaprio with luscious locks. Lots of familiar faces, Jeremy Irons makes a sarcastic and entertaining Aramis. John Malkovich is a bit of a downer even though it's Porthos who's supposed to have lost his lust for life (although not the ladies). Was surprised to see Hugh Laurie make a cameo though he has no speaking part.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

Really enjoyable, but only because it's so bad it's laugh-out-loud funny. It starts off reasonably well (even if it is a bit paranormal teen days of our lives) and then its a rapid slide downhill from there.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Cinematography and soundtrack are the only winners in this film. Performances are wooden and the two leads have no chemistry for a romance. You can tell when the director has given Dakota a particular instruction because it's so obvious and clunky, it makes it impossible to connect to the character. Jamie Dornan comes across as genuinely creepy so he's done well on that score. This could have easily become a horror or a comedy but instead it's just boring in the extreme.

The House Bunny

An almost painfully noughties comedy flick with a surprisingly star studded cast. This was like a highschool flashback fever dream with some extra insanity promoting the playboy brand which has aged worse than Hef. That said, it's still a mildly enjoyable turn your brain off movie with low stakes.

This movie is catatonic. I wanted to like this movie, a comedy parody of a biopic is normally just my cup of tea. The pace is as slow as the narrative of the much beloved pop culture figure its based on but delivers on no punchline until the final 10mins.

Lawrence Fishburn did a remarkable job on portraying how charming abusers can be when they want to be, but Angela Bassett steals the show without being a superficial fascimile of Tina.
