The Orville does it again!
The writers are bringing their A game in this season, not that the others were anything to whine about.
This is truly what I loved about Star Trek from days of old. Using an emphasis on culture differences between different alien races to provoke thought, challenge norms, ideas, and without smacking the viewer in the face, the question posed is 'what would you do'?
This was a beautifully crafted episode that gave it depth, the topic needed to be given the time to be laid out before the viewer for proper and due care of the subject matter. There were a number of strong ethical questions, personal, and presented the positive and also the harsh negative outcomes.
I am really enjoying The Orville this season. There is far less comedy in this season but I think personally I like the challenge of the subject matter. And yes I'd like to see some more of the comedic episodes too, but if there's a bit of this and some of that with this writing team, bring it on.
Congratulations The Orville cast, crew, writers, another superb piece.
This whole series reeked of season 8 Game of Thrones laziness. Undeserved character moments. Characters teleporting wherever's convenient. Disregarding backstory introduced episodes earlier to present the audience nonsensical redemption of villainous characters. There are thousands of great writers and directors. Many of them big Star Wars fans. Shame none worked on this show.
Now I have seen 2 episodes it's clear that this show is what many Trekkies have been looking for : mystery of the week with some food for thought, camaraderie, some humor and (if it's not to much of a bother) some pew pew flying stuff in space.
Mount, Peck and Romijn hit the ground running in their own spin-off but Gooding as Uhura is amazing. Can't wait for an episode focused on the medical team. Of course I can't help but like Ortegas and La'an, although I see some similarities with a certain Naomi Nagata & Camina Drummer, but I'm certainly not complaining about that.
The special effects are amazing and the writers do an excellent job with giving known characters more depth while still respecting what other writers have done. The way they get Pike's command style smack dab in the middle of Archer and T Kirk is very impressive. Strong characters but with flaws. This is a crew I would actually like to be part of, something that hasn't happened since Enterprise ( Team Trip Tucker all the way )
If they can keep this up I say : "6 seasons and a movie"
Bit of a disappointment so far, which seems to be a reoccurring theme with these Disney+ shows and their IPs. Maybe some better showrunners? I came into Obi-Wan pretty high on Deborah Chow, but maybe I was wrong. Some things have felt fluid, and others really clunky (the woods chase is as bad a scene of choreography, as I remember). The actress playing Reva feels like someone desperately cosplaying as an Empire based character.
It's insane how amazing the first three episodes of this second season has been. Again with an interesting classic twist and with some great acting, especially from Christina Chong. These character driven episode really is Star Trek for me. To bad there is only 7 episodes left of this season.
Awesome finale. I can only hope season 2 is as good as season 1.
I'm into episode 3 right now and doesn't seem to get better at all. Season 6 so far is disappointing. BM was so much better before Netflix.
Holden's face when he saw Clarissa was absolutely priceless.
For me this season was much better than the previous one, and it seems S6 is going to be one the best seasons of television.
Episodes like this make me proud to be a Trekie again. This episode didn't take itself too seriously and was full of sci-fi optimism, just what the world needs!
Worst episode of the whole series. Doesn't have anything in common with BM
"It was a trap" Haha :joy:
I honestly have no idea how they're pulling off a season that's this consistently good, episode after episode. Hulu/Disney better renew this show!
Bail leaving a message for Kenobi in where he mentions Tatooine and 'the boy' gotta be one of the dumbest and laziest things I've ever seen in Star Wars (and the bar is not that high). Some of the writings decisions in this series truly are baffling.
Guess it's good for families with small teenagers, but I wouldn't recommend it for grownups. Great effects though.
After five seasons, I'm still struggling to recall a single bridge crew member's name. This portrayal doesn't quite capture the essence of what "Trek" means to me. It feels more aligned with the rapid pace demanded by today's short attention spans, reminiscent of the JJ Abrams universe. This stands in stark contrast to the rich narratives and character development of classics like Next Gen and DS9. There's a notable absence of thought-provoking storylines akin to "In The Pale Moonlight." Instead, it seems geared towards mindless entertainment, earning a solid 8/10 for action-packed television but falling short with a mere 3/10 as a representative Trek episode.
Had you told me the best of Star wars television is yet to come when I was watching the S2 finale of the Mandalorian, I wouldn't have believed you.
Hahahaha... How on earth are they shooting face to face in the cave and they are still missing??
It might look and smell like star trek but this is not star trek
Ack! that was actually painful. An hour long episode that took only 10 mins to watch after skipping all the singing. Horrible episode.
I was on the edge of my seat for the whole episde :O
it's honestly so wild that they actually made a good star wars show
This show is growing on me without even trying. It's slow but I don't feel bored. I just like the tension, the dynamic between the rebels (if you can call them that already). The petty Imperial lackeys that are scraping for the tiniest bit of power. I have no clue what role Syril is gonna be playing in all of this. That they keep coming back to him suggest he could be important to the plot. Otherwise it makes no sense. Mon Mothma's family is really loathsome and Luthen seems to be overly anxious.
What can I say - I like it.
Trek as it should be! Great final episode of a fantastic first season. Can't wait for the next season. Why were there only 10 episodes?!
The show just keeps stepping it up. This was a joyous adventure full of fun and making full use of the characters. Ethan Peck is bringing so many good things to his portrayal of Spock. Pike's pirate excursion was delightful and I'm becoming genuinely heartbroken for how Chapel's feelings are being thrown around.
The real star here turned out to be Jesse James Keitel who absolutely slayed it, creating a character that I am super eager to see return. Slightly less impressive was the pirate Remy who felt like he was there only for joke purposes. Still fun though, especially as we got to see Pike in armoured apron.
And wow, that ending twist! I didn't even realise how much I wanted that until it happened.
Keep doing what you're doing, Strange New Worlds. This is so much fun. I just wish we were getting more Hemmer.
A LOTTTTTT OF THOUGHTS, many will have to be kept to spoilers. Spoiler tags aren't working for me.
As an episode of pure Star Wars, this was once again incredible. Dave Filoni knows this universe so well and he continues to impress. We got more of the Boba Fett - Pyke Syndicate storyline that feels overlooked and wasted this season, including memorable returns.
But once again, despite how entertaining and enjoyable this episode was - it was for a good portion, the 2nd episode (or episode adjacent) of The Mandalorian Season 3.
When people think of The Book of Boba Fett, they will without a doubt remember last week and ESPECIALLY, this week. And while that's not an endorsement of this show, its an endorsement for how good Star Wars CAN be in the right hands, and what they could eventually set up
JUST the Mandalorian parts by themselves made this one of the best episodes of the series. JUST those parts.
I did not have Mr. Pershing Goes to Washington on my bingo card. Damn them for making Coruscant feel so real, because I know I can never go there. I really wanted to believe that Kane was genuinely converted and Pershing was the one who was harboring malcontent. Gideon may be gone, but she is definitely working for whomever sent all those TIE Bombers.
But the gold medal goes to the final scene. Bo had a classic come-to-Jesus moment. It's not the life she envisioned, but it's the best life available to her now. Can't wait to feel the uncomfortable silence between her and Paz. And I was scared that Bo would somehow know who the Armorer is and they would have a serious falling out. I guess the worst thing right now is having a Kryze & a Vizsla living in the same cave.
Also this is in keeping with my selfish head-canon that Grogu is going to get a mommy.
Great finale, amazing first season. Maarva’s hologram speech is such a captivating catalyst. “There is a wound that won’t heal at the center of the galaxy.”
This federation has fought wars. Ruthless. Determined. Sent people into certain death when necessary. Well trained officers staying calm in crisis. On TNG there's even an episode on this where officers train to send fellow comrades into certain death for the sake of the greater good. And this crew needs a chaperon cause they are so overwhelmed by their feelings to Book and they won't stop talking about their feelings and get hysterical? You have a well devised battle plan. You had your orders. Lock your weapons and destroy them. At first chance. Problem solved. But you screwed that up. Good luck with first contact.
That ship is not a well-oiled military battle cruiser nor a vessel for bold exploration. It's like a self-therapy asylum. I could probably live with that but even the emotional stories are told extremely badly ...
Plus, that title. Rubicon. Do the authors even know what that means? Who has deliberately crossed the point of no return and started the civil war? I don't get it....
For a minute there I thought I downloaded the wrong show. :joy:
