I loved this series. It took a few episodes for me to really get into it, but this and Nozaki-kun ended up being my favourite series this season. Well done slice of life with enjoyable characters and some decent comedy.
I really liked Naru. It would have been very easy for her to have been the "really annoying kid character" you very often get, but I found her genuinely charming and endearing. For the most part, she spoke and acted like an actual child would, where a lot of series would mess up by having her act too much like a wiseass, or worse, some precocious loli. Thankfully, neither was the case here.
Handa himself came across as a flawed but quite sympathetic character. Watching his (usually startled) reactions to the things happening around him never got old!
The supporting cast were great too. They were all pretty upbeat and seemed fun to be around. I'd love to go hang out with them all on that island!
Overall a wonderful watch.
As per usual with many popular shows and films, it’s overhyped, overly serious, emotionally manipulative and mostly dumb.
It’s a show that thinks that people with shitty lives and gambling problems are willing to die for a 0.1% chance of winning a lot of money.
Bit of a thin motivation, wouldn’t you say?
Wouldn’t you probably flee the country, if your financial situation was that shitty? Wouldn’t you rather rob a bank, or a rich family? Yeah me too, I wouldn’t hesitate for a single second if it was between that or participating in some sadistic game.
It’s such a silly concept, and yet it’s presented as if this is some sort of serious and important drama with a lot of social commentary about poverty.
I’m sorry, but this is a show where the big villain looks like he walked out of a comic book (he literally looks like Victor van Doom from the Fantastic Four), and his minions have masks with Playstation buttons on them.
It’s schlock, but it thinks it’s Parasite.
And don’t get met even started on the acting, it’s fucking horrible.
This might’ve worked if our characters would be forced to participate involuntarily, but at that point you’re just remaking Battle Royale and The Hunger Games, so you’re kinda screwed regardless with this concept.
The acting is pretty bad, the CGI is laughable, the story doesn't appear that original to other Netflix Originals where a hero with new powers has a parental figure/family friend that has to be defeated (The Protector, Iron Fist, The Order) but I'm going to continue to give it ago, in the doubtful hope that it improves.
This series takes fan service accidents to a whole new level, completely ignoring the laws of probability. Most people couldn't make up the kind of wardrobe malfunctions that occur in this series.
I wanted to like this so much, the manga is amazing and the other anime adaptations were actually pretty good, but they just had to let such an amateur studio (or actually two at the same time) adapt it, I'm really disappointed.
Let's hope this show at least garners more attention to Berserk in general.
No Spoilers at all.
So, i just finished first season of the series, and having watched this far, i dont really know how this series got an 8 here... its a "kinda good" series, it makes use of a lot of good characters from british literature and has a good cast of actors, really good actually, and they kinda put together a good "ambience" for these characters on a good plot, the problem here is, the plot moves too slow, so slow you actually lose interest in the middle of the episode, i start watching it, and around 20-30 minutes i am already picking my phone and doing something else and not even paying atention, which is a shame, cause the series has everything to be good, another problem i find with it is the way the characters are "connected" everything sees so random that it doesnt seem random at all, its like, every character find each other from time to time with no reason whatsoever besides advancing the plot, its too much of a coincidence.
Its not a bad series by any means, but if you are like me, and like a little bit more action packed and not so "wait for the plot to happen" series, this is not for you, my personal score for this would be 6, cause of this point in question, but since this is a review for other people and not myself, i am confortable with giving it a 7, but i dont find it deserving any more than a 7.
You'd expect more from Tina Fey than this. A direct two season order is a blessing for this show as it wouldn't get it on its originial network for sure.
Although, it's not the worst I've seen and there are better ones being supported after they jumped the shark ages ago for several more seasons (Cougar Town).
However, the show has a likable maincharacter (Kimmy) and some fitting sidecharacters. But the focus lies partially too much on Tidus, the roomate Kimmy shares a basement appartment with. The occasional appearance of some known B/C actors is nice, like Dean Norris or Richard Kind or the recurring role of Jane Krakowski as the boss of Kimmy.
The Person I cannot stand the most is Carol Kane who plays the landlord of Kimmy and Tidus. One of the most "unnecessary" actors I've ever seen. I hate to see her here or in Gotham where she plays the mother of Penguin.
Personal preference aside, the end of the first season (last three eps) is based on most incredible stupidity for laughs. Some form of this would be acceptable as it used throughout the first season anyway (Kimmy's father is borderline stupilarious as long as he doesn't appear too often, or too long), especially since Tina Fey is an executive producer and guestappearing herself in these episodes. But the horrendous level of stupidity makes it barely watchable.
If you expect the same quirkiness as you know from 30 Rock, you won't be entirely disappointed but to some degree nontheless. It's still an okayish, uplifting, sort of wacky attempt at a comedy.
The second season of Noragami has just finished and it surpassed the first in every way. I remember really enjoying the first season but finding the final few episodes and confrontation a bit underwhelming. Well, the second season doesn't have that problem. It hits the ground running and remains consistently good throughout. Deciding to animate two arcs back-to-back with little-to-no filler in between was definitely a wise decision by Bones.
As others have already said, this series really does stand out from other more generic action/comedy shows, thanks to a likable and well-developed cast, good quality animation and of course a godly soundtrack by Iwasaki Taku (also responsible for the soundtrack in Katanagatari).
All in all I have really enjoyed Noragami thus far and I hope we get more in the future.
this show is nothing but one big attempt of shading a lesser tv-genre, and I love it xD
Horrendous. Stupid plot, stupid lines, good actors being destroyed by a cheesy POS show. Sorry but I'm amazed that they renewed this for a second season. Crazy.
The Promised Neverland started great and compelling until Season 2 comes and pulls away from the source material, they had to skipped 140+ chapters just to end so abruptly awful.
BORING. SO VERY BORING. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT IS THIS BORING.
Damn I hate this show yet I continue to watch it. It's not even funny nor is it thought provoking. I mean, if your a rich single parent family where Mom barely has to work and can jet set around to fabricate drama then maybe you can connect. I dunno.
It was a boring show for me. I got the concept but they didn't give any closure to the technical stuff.
Animation was poor at most of the point and plot has many loopholes.
I won't recommend to watch it!
What I expected was a mature, gritty version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. What I got was a very political, very Christian, horror-themed version of Sabrina that still seems targeted specifically at a teenage demographic.
Is it just me, or was the original TV series accidentally progressive for showing an alternative non-Christian lifestyle in a positive light? This new series seems to undermine the progressiveness of its source material by re-imagining this non-Christian lifestyle as explicit devil-worshipping, where witches routinely commit murder and cannibalism. Sabrina's own aunt Zelda expresses disappointment about missing out on an opportunity to eat "long-pig".
The story also seems to take a few pages from Harry Potter with Sabrina being persecuted by pure-blood witches for being half-Muggle and it even has its evil version of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It actually really feels like it is a knee-jerk reaction to the popularity of Harry Potter; a story with a protagonist whose challenge is to resist the temptation of evil witchcraft.
Finally, why do they have to refer to everything as "dark"? When Sabrina tells Harvey about her "dark baptism", maybe it would have sounded a lot less crazy if she'd just called it a "baptism"? It's like listening to Dr Evil (from Austin Powers) explain how he got his M.D. in "evil medical school". There's absolutely no subtlety to be had here.
This show was a mASSterpiece. No other words could possibly describe the glory that is Keijo!!!!!! This is only series that has made me seriously reconsider converting to an ASS-man (other than Prison School). That alone should cement this series in the Top 5 rankings of all-time.
Season 2 when?
It's a weak show, but it gets better towards the second half. Another one in a recent trend of "comedies" that follow utterly unlikeable people that the audience is supposed to identify with through cringe-y situations. Saved by Gillian Jacobs' performance, primarily. It occasionally strikes gold for a few moments, but prepare to be bored for big chunks.
The main character of this anime is one of the most annoying that I have ever seen.
Good start but after we transitioned over to the US the show just went downhill for me, we spent WAY too much time trying to comprehend what's good? what's evil? and is suicide okay? The finale felt rather sporadic and didn't address the core events of the series (Shiniki, Magase's goal/ aims etc.) and the cliffhanger just left more questions (that I doubt we will ever have officially answered) than answers.
I'm certainly late to the party but still in time for the third arc that is starting next month.
The on-going JoJo manga started publishing when I wasn't even born and had an anime adaptation once before in the 90's. JoJo is rather popular in Japan thanks to the fabulous art style and poses the character's strike (which get referenced quite often in other works).
The show is well done style over substance and riddled with shonen antics so you either go with the flow or stay away from it. That said, the members of the Joestar family are actually not that dumb and often win thanks to their wit.
Here is hoping we get to see a lot more arcs in the future!
Dollhouse is an intriguing, messed up, quirky, thought-provoking, series that's full of twists, mind benders, and a lot of creepy storylines. Yet it's funny and light-hearted most times. I did not really "enjoy" watching Dollhouse, but I was so fascinated and so taken by it that I had to watch it all. And I loved it, in an awkward way.
How did this show get on the air? It's beyond horrible.
Dutch angled, Shallow focused, Room Spaced, Messy Trash.
Vicious's subplot is patetic and Julia is ruined. an amateurish parody of the original. bleah!
Too bad there’s so much stupidity and useless teen drama as the premise of the story seems interesting. It’s like they had material for 4 episodes but had to push 10 and blurted out 6 hours of annoying filler content. The only character that is decent seems to be Bode. Tyler and Kinsey as written really bad and super annoying and they are stupid as a rock.
This show is the pinnacle of stupidity and you will see this with each passing episode.
Season 1:
This show failed in my eyes. It lacked consistent, good writing. It had a great premise with a lot of potential... but many things that happened broke the suspension of disbelief in this viewer because they are fabricated for an unnecessary and pointless dramatic effect, break physical laws, or ignore obvious intelligent decisions. There are too many contrivances. Characters make the most irrational and illogical decisions for absolutely no reason whatsoever multiples times. Many main or likable character deaths are forced and pointless beyond being incredibly unbelievable and useless. The deaths serve next to no purpose and would be avoided by any human with even the most average intelligence. Examples can be found in my comments for each episode in spoiler tags.
Story way underperformed for the premise it started with at the beginning. Music and sound was great. Some amazing backdrops and still scenes. The art does a good job of showing how ugly human emotions can be at times.
Loved the first episode.
Each episode contains two tales of the supernatural.
The first was outstanding and brought shades of the original back for 2019.
The second tale was a little less horrific but scary at points nonetheless.
Curious to see where this will go.
Definitely looking forward to the next season!
Edit (After Watching Season 2):
This was one of the best anime of this year. With an impressive plot and beautiful animation, it gave me a wonderful experience.
The funny scenes were very hilarious. Even though I've only known about Koto from this anime but there last performance was very heart-warming to me. Only minus point was they didn't show much of Satowa x Chika or Hiro x Takezo :weary:, but it was never a romcom anyway.
If another season got announced, I'd definitely be hyped. :fingers_crossed:
So... the show got it's second season. Was it worth it? Totally not. It turned to utter trash (from an already messy adaptation).
S2 further diverts from the actual story it adapts (not that I've read it nor do I want to) but it's all with the supposed consent and input of the author - which is cool.. if it made any sense. They throw in so many characters we're supposed to give a shit only to involve them in things we know jack about. The show does in no way stand on it's own feet. Heck, the MC by this point is even harder to grasp. How great is it to have edgy fights with boring choreography and constant spasm of god awful animation! I'm floored how some people seriously liked the season. The only slightly redeeming thing was the anticlimactic last episode but it's by no means good.
Downgraded my overall rating from a "5" to a "4" (S2 is a 2/10).
Yeah, I love this series. I've always been a fan of Key anyway and I remember being so stoked when I heard about this new project. For what it's worth this ranks in my top 3 Key works (along with Clannad and Rewrite, the latter of which sadly doesn't have an anime adaption(yet...?))
If you've seen other Key works like Clannad, Kanon or Air, you probably already know that they tend to enjoy mixing comedy with tragedy, often whiplashing you between the two very quickly. Whilst these elements are certainly present in Angel Beats, and whilst the pasts of some of these characters are still pretty horrible and tragic, I don't think the series generally wallows in it as much as other Key works perhaps did.
The series has a nice mix of action, comedy, music and drama and it works really well. It also has TONNES of characters (A trait it shares with Little Busters I guess) which sadly, due to the series only being 13 episodes long, don't all have time to be developed to their full. Still, they are all a fun and silly bunch generally, and watching their antics is very enjoyable indeed.
Finally some good news for anyone who wanted more. Key have finally announced that an Angel Beats Visual Novel will be released in 2014. By the looks of it, it will be released in separate chapters (or beats), but hopefully this will give people a chance to learn more about the characters that didn't get much screen time in the anime (well, assuming it ever gets translated :D)
