While tolerable this show is EXTREMELY repetitive as it only has the single joke for every segment. I would have preferred to see this as a short series instead.

Anno's Animator Expo showcases a diverse range of short movies with different approaches when it comes to animation. The amount of CG heavy productions gets bigger every year and certain advances can be seen here as well (with various degree of success). As with any collection of shorts there are some standouts (which even gathered some attention outside the project) and some not so great entries. Given the size those are very few though.
The project seems to have been vastly ignored by everybody which is understandable, I hope however that these kind of projects keep on coming (like Ani*Kuri, Anime Mirai, etc.).

FX has had it's fair share of great Dramas recently but I won't count Tyrant to those.

Since we follow the brother of a Dictator and it's set in the Middle East it obviously wants to focus on the politics... but common, how was that going to work anyways? The protagonist returning from America stands on the moral high ground and wants to change the ways of his brother - which he has plenty of chances to do. You know, that social media thing? You don't want to clean that plaza violently... Always treading the same ground is also not very interesting nor was it done in any realistic manner. As the series progresses and brings US politics into the mix it only gets worse. Much of the screen time was also wasted with really pointless and never followed up on story lines for the family (and the sister for example was just added for god damn nothing). The acting was lackluster as well and Justin Kirk was a total miscast (working with ever so flat characters to be fair).
The show would have been much more enjoyable if the Dictator was consistently insane and not craving for his brother's 'love' and opinions (which he afterwards ignores anyways).
Maybe it improves once S2 comes around but for now I would not recommend the show.

This is seriously entertaining. A mix of real and staged "reality tv". The saddest part is probably that his faked "Pig rescues baby goat" Youtube-video got more views than all the episodes together. Looking forward to Season 2!

Really not bad for a mascot show. It's quite simplistic but the characters are quirky enough to make things entertaining. The last arc dragged a bit but they are only 10 minute episodes anyways ;).

With Wes Craven's recent passing this show can't be considered a honor to his work. Luckily he didn't do much else than let them use his name for the show.

You can't do a slasher movie as a TV series.

The above is an actual quote from a character in this show which certainly applies here. There is little "slasher" in this show! Instead they took some basic ideas from the genre and paired it with Pretty Little Liars whose fans also seem to be the target audience.
No one does a decent job acting, the dialogue is often cringey, the story sucks and they make absolute no use of the runtime to build the characters or go past the cliché. They even had the balls to go for a second season.

For anyone who liked the movies and thinks that the TV series is the logical continuation you have to watch: don't do it.

This show is a mixed-bag that is more on the bad side. It can be pretty much summed up by the meta "Triptank" segments which repeatedly shows that they think that they are too edgy to be on TV (and yeah, there is a lot of stuff about pot because they got to at least grab one audience or something).

So, that final episode just made me lower the rating even more. Helix is a generic mix of various clichés from genre fiction but just doesn't come together very well. Despite featuring a plenthora of scientists there isn't much of their brilliance left which results in so many unneeded clusterfucks. Suprisingly for a 13 episode season taking place in a remote research base they manage to fill the runtime but there is still plenty of melodrama to go along with the silliness of the story. Probably the best thing about the show is the music choice which is rather playful but that's about it.
Season 2 has been announced and is probably the reason for the first one ending so unsatisfying. From the looks of it that one is rather disconnected and offers even less reason to have a full season of it.

I had a blast watching the show! Given that it aired in Canada I wasn't really aware of it's existance but there seems to be a big enough fandom to actually have crowdfunded a proper, animated, ending. It feels pretty much like a more vulgar version of Buffy with lots of gore. Just like that show it knows how to work the "gang". I think my only complaint is that the show seemingly added more swearwords with every episode and thereby making the dialogue more forced.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Thought I'd check this out because of ufotable and expected another Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu but somehow ended up with a popular shonen jump adaptation ... dropped out about midway during it's airing and only now finished the show.
While there is some of the expected visual glamour including very stylized combat techniques to elevate this but the format is safe and the writing not really great. Still, there is a decent amount of action and interesting demon powers to overcome so that should be cool..? It's just that they main trio(quartet) kinda sucks. Not only are they extremely one note but two of them are just played for comedy 80% of the time - and it's the kind of comedy that makes me want to blow my brains out. The fourth wheel Nezuko that should drive the story is mostly stashed away in her basket and can be used conveniently to save the day when required.
Could have been decent if it wasn't for those distracting issues...

Highly enjoyable but extremely low brow comedy where the overlords of the underworld end up being cute animals once they're summoned to earth. While the episodes themselves are only ten minutes long the stories usually take two of them to complete anyways.

Ninja Slayer sees Studio TRIGGER (or more likely just Akira Amemiya) pursuing the steps of Inferno Cop. Lots of cutout cheap ass giggle animations and not so serious plot. Unlike the former series they sometimes do "regular" scenes but not for very long.
The occasional YEEEEEEEARTTTTT shenanigans, the traditional ninja DOMO introductions and SAYONARA deaths are probably the high lights. Not really recommended.
A gotta give it to TRIGGER tho for having 26 different ending songs by various alternative Japanese bands (mostly rock but even shoegaze 👍).

I'm just going to say that the first two episodes were really terrible but then it luckily turns around to less obnoxious otaku humor. I think it works best when it's just about the couple's relationship. With just three minutes per episode it's not much of a commitment anyways.

Gunbuster... Gungrave - Yeah, I had the wrong show on my Watchlist.
I'm sorry for whoever goes into the show based on the promo art because it is really misleading. The show is the sequel to a PS2 game and also opens in that setting; "Beyond the Grave" (the guy on the cover) fighting some monsters. Come the second episode and you're back to him and his friends in their late teens being members of a crime gang. From that point on the story follows them as they join the Mafia and grow older back up to the point where the first episode started. Can't say that is the best way to go about it as a standalone title.
While there are some good episodes along the road once it shifted for it's ending I didn't care for much of it. The shows core is really the relationship between Brandon and Harry and not the peng peng.
The look of the show is rather dated because Madhouse improved on everything since then and it even resembles their later Hellsing Ultimate.
Given that the previous commentators here really enjoyed the show it might appeal to others more but for me it was a true mixed bag.

I watched the first episode mostly disliking the show. The art was really bubbly and shiny and one of the center girls, Manaka, was an annoying, whiny klutz. To my surprise it actually got alot better. The characters get developed and some interesting dynamics get added to the story. Not only that, the visuals they kept consistently very high quality made it easily the prettiest show of the recent year I'd say.
Now don't get me wrong, despite this being a world where there are people living both under water and on land, thus sporting a other-worldly element, this isn't exactly it's center point. It mostly serves as a backdrop to a complicated love pentagon between the main cast of kids with plenty of melo-drama and tears (which the story around them just pushes further).
If you're into romance give the show a go but don't expect the biggest mystery out of the legend of the sea god here.
By the looks of it the next show of P.A. Works will be pretty much this again so let's hope they manage to top this.

Star Blazers 2199

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a remake of an now almost 30 year old show that got a quite the unusual release. Multiple episodes a-piece were first shown in the cinema with physical releases and a TV broadcast later on. In addition to that they also marketed to the english market themselves which they hardly ever do (and releasing awkward videos like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR71MSl3vIs).
The show itself is a straight space opera. Almost all episodes are self-contained and play out on their travels to a remote galaxy where they hope to save planet earth with the help of an alien race. Except for three episodes I enjoyed them all quite a bit and there are some great space battles to be seen. It might all have been a touch too romantic for my taste but it's oldschool in that regard.
The presentation itself is good throughout and the show carries retro sound-design and music (with the intro recreated by Hideaki Anno).
The original aired in the US under the title Star Blazers which gives it that now quite "uncool" name but if you havn't seen it then you now have the chance to do so with the updated version.

Thanks @ManiacB for the rec. I would never have looked into it otherwise.

Noragami

While Noragami isn't exactly a masterpiece it is a well-rounded show with a good cast and animation to set it apart from the big pack of generic, shiny, fantasy action shows.
The story follows the god Yato (who is weirdly dressed like a Slav) on his quest to gather a following and build a shrine. To achieve that he does all sorts of odd jobs for the lowly cost of only ¥5 - the amount you tip when you pray at a shrine in Japan. Hiyori, a girl who's soul gets stuck between the human world and the afterlife joins him as his longest contracted "customer" aswell as Yukine, a teenager who becomes Yato's regalia‎ (weapon) to combat evil spirits.
While there is initially a lot of comedy mixed inbetween the show gets progressively "darker" in tone but is still played save. I really hope the show gets another season because there is enough left to explore and the format works really well.

It's rather uneventful and the only unique feature is that the grandpa of one of the girls is a rabbit and mostly sits on her head. The designs look like they're straight out of Kiniro Mosaic with Rize looking like Aya and even sharing the same seiyuu...
It's well made for what it is, just don't look for creativity!

A story about a traveling merchant named Lawrence who one day meets a harvest deity in the form of a "wolf woman" called Holo which travels along with him to the north in search of her former hometown. While I've always heard that it is supposed to be an economics driven show it isn't really that accurate. The plot might be driven by it but the story itself is about the relationship of Lawrence and Holo. Unfortunately they seem to have forgotten about that in the second season which sees them seemingly part ways or meeting a fur trader which steals too much screentime. Since a third season never got made it would have been better to adapt the ending instead of this more filler stuff.
Given the praise I've always heard I was a bit disappointed. These voices might come from the male fans of Holo like this guy http://www.fabricerequin.com/post/category/project-holo/ who visited tons of places with a cardboard cutout of his waifu...

I was happy to learn that Quibi also gives horror a shot and if this would actually expand to 50 states it would be incredible - not that it seems realistic at the moment though (in part because of the platform but also because it is more expensive to produce)...
Like any anthology the ride is uneven and some of them actually felt too short but the production was on point so even the worst ones were at not flat-out bad

The Golden Arm (Michigan) - a bit underdeveloped backstory but good payoff with Evil Dead vibes.
America's Largest Ball of Twine (Kansas) - well done folk horror.
Scared Stiff (Oregon) - too short really...
Grey Cloud Island (Minnesota) - meh regular "modern-horror fare" with a twist that is obvious from the get go...
Destino (Florida) - Alejandro Brugués X Eduardo Sánchez collab which SHOULD have made use of the portrait mode the platform provides to do something cool but instead just plays the normal found footage stick :disappointed:.

Apparently this "pre-aired" so I hope it's going to get additional episodes soon... there were others announced in press before the release...

If anime taught me anything then it's that it can make even the most apparent (subjective) boring things work. Unfortunately a lot of this was just not very exciting, part because of it's generic framework and imho muddled character interactions but also because of Production I.G not bringing their A-game.
