Chalamet again fulfills his usual broody character role, leading the cast in a gritty and authentic world.
The only qualm I had was the ending, as I didn't feel it was particularly solid, and I was left with no sense of direction for where the narrative will go in Part 2.
This may have been a result of watching the film after a full day of work, however - dialogue and details slipping past me. A second viewing on a weekend may be in order.
Despite feeling left in the dark, I look forward to my return to the world of Arrakis.
The concept seems really interesting but I feel like the first movie was entirely a setup for the second film which will likely be insane. So basically the first film is underwhelming but definitely necessary
Rated 7/10 just because I am a big fan of Dune and a anyone who spends a lot of money to bring this universe alive deserves some credit. I am really satisfied with most castings especially Timothée Chalamet as Paul however I see absolutely no reason for casting Liet Kynes as a woman of color. Just why, really? Also some major sequences that were well covered in the original film are left out and replaced by desert vistas that while originally nice - do not bring any further value after a while. I found the Bene Geserit fight sequences using the voice particularly well done just like the ornithopters.
6.5/10 - This isn't really my thing. It reminds me a lot of Blade Runner 2049 - great cinematography and it shows a lot but tells/explains little. I prefer Sci-Fi over fantasy though (with a few exceptions). It's quite confusing to follow along without any prior knowledge (at least for me) but I think I got the essence. Overall it was certainly interesting but a bit boring. And ending with "this is only the beginning" after two and a half hours is a bit underwhelming. At least it said "part one" at the beginning though (I wasn't aware of that before I started watching so that helped a lot in regards of my expectations). The designs are kinda cool but I also find them stupid as they seem to make little sense in a scientific way (everything feels too big and heavy, the mechanisms would probably waste a lot of energy, and the user interfaces feel way too simplistic; spice being required for interstellar travel / navigators seemed also super weird). "The voice" and other gifts/powers are interesting/cool but we kinda saw little of it. The Fremen are kinda cool but quite weird (their traditions, the way that dude talked (plus the "gift of your body's moisture", "we accept it in the spirit in which it was given" xD)). Drinking your own recycled water likely takes some getting used to but it's better than dying. I'm looking forward to some "desert power".
PS: Never trust any bad guys, duh ("I said that I sat her free. That you could join her." ... "so join her"). That doctor ruined everything (although he was only able to do so due to bad security) but at least he enabled Paul's father to get some revenge via the poison.
PPS: Coriolis storm sounds interesting. Although the coriolis effect could only influence the direction it spins, right?
Enjoyable and interesting, but the ending was clearly not an ending. Guess we have to stay tuned for the sequel.
I'm halfway through. And this is the third time I tried to watch it. Absolutely stunning movie but I'm lost. I don't know what any of it means. But this is one movie I'd like to get to know better cause I feel somethings there. Visually, just like Blade Runner, you can screenshot any scene and hang it on the wall. I'll watch a youtube video to explain it to me or something.
Finally watched Dune. This is going to sound insulting but it's not meant that way. My favorite aspect right now is where they choose to stop the movie. I think for a half story they choose a great spot to stop. Visually it's definitely the best looking of the Dune adaptions. Timmy makes for a great Paul. I don't care for him as an actor but he was solid here. He might be the best of the actors who have played this character, and I went into this movie expecting to hate him. I think it's my least favorite Yom Gobber scene though. Ironically for something that should be front loaded they still ended up trimming so much. Still it was mostly there and though not a lot happened. I think it's a good setup.
Duke Harkkonen was just honestly not gross enough imo. The man is supposed to be the pinnacle of slovenly excess and here he's just bald. Dune (the first book of the series) is still such a dense book it's really hard to adapt without narration. Points to this movie for doing that. That said there are important parts of the story that are trimmed out. And that's beyond the stuff that was removed for adaption purposes.
The pacing of the movie is very solid. It moves at a measured pace never feeling rushed or dragging. Which looking back at a 2.5 hour movie is kinda impressive especially once that minimizes the sort of explosive spectacle you typically get from a blockbuster. But like Sea Beast I'm not especially wowed by it with the exception of the really terrifying scale. The sandworms of Dune like the monsters in Sea Beast are terrifyingly huge and the movie does an effective job of showing that scale. But with this pacing being SO even you don't really get excited for anything. It makes the movie feel more passive. There are main characters that die some of them played but rather decently known actors and yet I didn't care. It just felt like something that happened "next". Not like something I'd look forward to seeing on rewatches. Even the final scene which ends with Paul having to fight a freman a pivotal point in the book and one filled with dramatic tension but here its just sort of happens. The fight isn't dragged out and there is some lip service to the fact that Paul unknowingly signed up to a death only fight and has never done that before but this was a scene that was supposed to be a transition nexus. A point where Paul could go one way but goes another and yet it just felt like.. oh another conflict. In part because the movie doesn't have time to really set it up. Everything is setting up the next movie. Giving context to the next era of Pauls life. Which isn't awful. The drama that's coming should be fun and hopefully make up for that.
In my opinion the real meat and potatoes of drama was trimmed out mostly because there's just so much story to tell there wasn't time not even in 150 minutes of half story. That's just how again dense Dune is as a story. While the movie was good, it didn't wow me but it also didn't bore me to the point where I didn't want to see the obligatory sequel. Rather instead I think it hit a nice peak. While I didn't feel the drama in the first half there's still plenty to explore in the second half. I look forward to seeing this iteration of Dune fully mature. We'll see if it can top my favorite version of Dune, the miniseries, in more than just budget. Though darn it those worms were very pretty.
Amazing atmosphere, amazing sound effects and sound tracks (Made by Hans Zimmer).
Dune world almost identical what it is described in the book.
It should take at least half an hour longer to explain some of the details for the people not read the book but it is still a absolute masterpiece by Denis Villeneuve.
I am so sad that this movie was so disappointing. I was very excited about it and will agree that the cinematography, score and costumes are beautiful.
However, nothing happens in this movie, it just dragged for 2 hours and yet somehow managed to still not make me care for any of the characters.
Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" has long been considered "unadaptable" for film, but director Denis Villeneuve proves to be more than up to the task with his latest cinematic offering. The story follows the House Atreides, led by Duke Leto (Isaac), as they are forced into a war for control of the planet Arrakis against the House Harkonnen and the native Fremen. The planet is the only source of the powerful drug "spice," and the Emperor has nefarious designs for its destruction. Paul Atreides (Chalamet) is plagued by visions of a dangerous future that could threaten the existence of House Atreides. Villeneuve masterfully navigates the complex layers of subplots and narrative strands, creating a visually stunning and well-acted epic. Though the heavy dialogue and dense lore may not be accessible to all, the film carries a lingering air of dread and intrigue that will leave viewers wanting more.
This was like Arrival all over again -- a source material I like turned very visual with not enough character-building. I guess Villeneuve just isn't my style! (Unless I need a big nap)
Great scenes, magnific music, but no real history. It gave me the "need" to read the book, because all of the situations, political relations, different needs and people are something this film forget. Incredible actors, but to be 2h35min I missed some context to anything that happened on the screen. Just magnific to get you hiped to watch Dune 2 or to go read the books but not so good if you want a nice joint of pieces
Visually stunning. Great cast. Well acted. True to the book. One of the best Sci-fi movies in some time. Highly recommend.
Me when Oscar Isaac :place_of_worship:
I learned much better about the story than in the original.
The film is longer than necessary and the political plot is a little difficult to understand right away – perhaps a fault of mine, for not knowing the history of the books. I thought the first hour of the movie was a little drawn out.
But in the second half – especially after Leto's death – the film grows a lot! I didn't really feel the 1h30 pass that followed from there. The story gets quite interesting. The open ending already left me curious and looking forward to the sequel. Judging by the first movie, I think we could be looking at the beginning of a franchise as epic as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Time will tell...
Now i want to read the books
A good appetiser, especially because of the excellent but loud music made by Hans Zimmer, but not friendly for audience who hasn’t finished the original work or at least gather basic plots of Dune.
This is how Dune should have been made the first time. It's an excellent adaptation of the book and an excellent science fiction movie. When a movies goes above and beyond to make you believe that you are seeing another world and an alien culture then it draw you in and I can saw I was very drawn in.
The first Dune movie is awful, just plain awful. This redeems the story.
I love good science fiction, even non-action science fiction, so long as the story is strong, the effects are superb and you can get a feeling that, yes it's science fiction but I could see this as being possible. Even Sandra Bullock in Gravity pulls this off - it can seen as a boring single actor film but it's realistic and well done so you get drawn in. Dune is better than that.
Did they forget to add "part 1" to the name? Like it's not bad, but I feel like I watched a 30-minute act one stretched to 2.5 hours. The whole time I was waiting for something interesting to start, and all I got was just the initial setup.
Must have 4k UHD Blu-ray. Stunning picture and audio. Storyline brings most attractive sci-fi movie at this year. Not all remakes are as good as this one. Perfect.
Star Wars is for kids who wake up early on Saturday and Dune is for the big boys point blank period, Like Marvel is so Predictable and Basic compared to the more possible and realistic DC
Meh.
Denis Villeneuve on par for the course.
Breathtaking cinematography, brooding atmosphere, hamfisted dialogue. Plot feels disjointed and flat, scenes have no weight, characters lack arcs or human qualities.
Entire scenes go by one after another and you get lost wondering if a random detail is important to the story or just there to make the characters look cool or something.
You could argue that is just the way that book was written, but I've seen this in everything I've watched from Villeneuve.
Some damn good casting though - I suspect everyone in Hollywood wants to get involved in one of the few big filmmaker projects remaining - It's either this or Marvel movies these days.
Did not impress me in any way, but it's a good (yet overhyped) movie. Will see part 2 and will probably remain the best version of Dune put on screen.
Credit to the foundation laid by 1984s Dune and built upon by this modern version.
Where the older miniseries was more sociopolitical, the 2021 film is more action focused (and thankfully condensed) - both are enjoyable films for lovers of heady science fiction.
Movie of the year, no doubt.
This is the genre of science fiction movie for adults I absolutely love and I CANNOT WAIT to see part 2 don't get me wrong though, other science fiction movies are 'entertaining' as they are meant to please audience of all ages, but this, this, is truly art and people who complain about it saying 'it's boring' clearly don't understand the art of cinema. I can honestly say Denis Villeneuve belongs in the pantheon among the greatest directors of all time. Merci !
An amazing movie, this is undeniable. But not an welcoming one to people who haven't read the book. There should be some kind of warning, so you wouldn't waste time making a big effort to link the pieces.
never saw the original or read the book. Really well crafted job that will intrigate u either by the presentation or the naration. Even if it s not a full story i was happy and find it was a good watch. The visual and sound top notch, acting really competent. I love they went the extra miles to really materialize this universe and i anticipate a lot the next one
It is not Dune. It is not Paul Atreides. It is nice art house.
Masterpiece!
Dune from 1984 was a masterpiece and Dune from 2021 is a masterpiece!
David Lynch then and Denis Villeneuve nowadays have perfectly realized the unique atmosphere of this movie.
To relive a childhood movie the same way is extremely rare these days.
Looking forward to Dune: Part Two in 2023.
It's nice to have serious, dramatic science fiction.
As someone who loves LOTR, I highly recommend you guys to watch this and I want more!!
I didn't read the novels so I really I didn't know what I was getting into but I absolutely loved what I watched.
This whole movie introduces the world of Dune and politics involved in it. It sets up Timothee Chalamet's character to phase 1 of his life changing path. It also shows glimpes of future wars and Timothee Chalamet's character is at the centre of it all.
The PLOT, ACTING, CHARACTER INTRODUCTION, DEVELOPMENT, THEME, MUSIC AND VISUALS are brilliant. The movie throughout maintains its serious tone.
This movie only scratches the surface of Dune and I love it. I actually can't wait to see what happens next so I have ordered books from amazon lol.
Having not consumed any sort of Dune media, I went into this with virtually no expectations except that I just wanted to see Denis Villeneuve flex his sci-fi muscles yet again. And flex, he did.
Dune moves slowly and methodically, and it manages to capture your attention with every setpiece, costume, and piece of technology. The politics are easy to understand, and you feel the weight every decision holds. The performances are all solid; even Jason Momoa's dudebro attitude didn't feel too out of place in this world because it fits his character.
Speaking of which, the worldbuilding is pretty cool. They do a great job at telling us what we need to know and hinting at how the rest of the world operates. I can't wait to see more of it.
Unfortunately, I couldn't be fully gripped by this movie because it's incomplete. I wish it were structured to feel like both Part One of the Dune story, as well as an individual movie (much like The Lord of the Rings), but that's not what we got. It almost feels anticlimactic, like it ended too soon. But I think my rating might change once I see Dune: Part Two. I hope I'll be more satisfied once we get the full story.
Wake me up when it is finished.
Episode 10x04
Great display of special effects, great settings and a setting of 10. However, in a footage of more than two and a half hours, the events are scarce and the story progresses perhaps with a too calm rhythm. But it should be noted that this is a first part, so perhaps it should be taken as an aperitif of what is to come. If so, it would be a good starting point for knowing how to introduce the viewer into this universe, also thanks to performances at the level of the work to be transmitted. But for the moment, and until its sequel is released, it is not the memorable movie that I expected to find.
I’m still replaying the scene with the murderous robotic fly and Timmy in between some holographic bush. That’s cinema.
I felt it was Confusing and boring
don't usually comment on movies, but this one deserves it. 8 out of 10, only thing I would have done any different is to have shown the emporer more closely
Eh. I like David Lynch’s version better. The pacing seemed a bit off. And with no ending it was clearly a cash grab for future films.
Having never read the book, it's pretty clear that this movie had to fast track some exposition, and that's because this movie is almost ENTIRELY exposition. BUUUTTT, I don't think it was bad! I seriously enjoyed this movie. The plot, while heavy in exposition (and it had to be, it's clearly a very complex world with a lot of political drama), was still interesting, moved at a good pace, and was action-packed. I had no expectations, and I was blown away by the beauty of the world and connected with the characters. I'm not even mad I was Zendaya-baited.
I really shouldn't be surprised...
Dune is GREAT!!!!
I'm not going to pick this one apart. Mainly because it's not really much to say other than to praise it, and that gets boring, but also because the decision should be a no-brainer for most people that either like sci-fi or Denis Villeneuve.
Dune is based on a beloved sci-fi book, and follows the source material rather faithfully, It's also directed by one of the best visual storytellers out there today.
Do you really need more incentive to find a way to watch this?
I haven't read the books but, I can say as a movie I would consider it to be one of my fav movies I've ever seen even though some parts are boring the music by Hans Zimmer makes up for it. I just know the 2nd part is going to be even better.
I just watched Dune for the second time right now, and it just became more incredible. The acting, the special effects, the tone. This is gold sci-fi. I want to watch this again and again, and see more of this universe (as long as it keeps the quality of this movie in its sequels)
what an experience watching this masterpiece in IMAX 4DX. my life is complete.
Great first part can't wait for the next one
Edit: after having read the books, bumping this up to a 9 since man what a great adaptation of the book!
What I saw was awesome! Where is the rest of the movie? This is by far the best version of Dune, but it is missing so much. What a shame.
Dune is an immersive cinematic experience that should be experienced on the biggest screens. The dystopian fantasy drama is orchestrated by Denis Villeneuve's visceral vision. The Cinematography, VFX, costume design, and production value are outstanding and are incomparable with many. But the screenplay is far stretched and overall a dull experience for me in terms of entertainment. As much as I was disappointed with the action and screenplay I was still in awe of the art Denis has put on. The performances are great where I found Oscar Isaac's limited screentime very powerful and Timothee's acting genuine. Overall Dune is a clear example of Cinema is art and art is subjective. Some may get an immersive experience and some may just brush this epic as a boring outing.

This is hands down the best movie I have seen all year...It went way beyond my expectations! I was not disappointed in the least
Great movie, beautiful cinematography, but I felt some of the scene were out of focus. Hope it was just me from watching at home.
The thrilling, breathtaking science fiction movie of this generation. Characters were a bit stilted and the pacing was a bit off at times. Other than that, I can find nothing to criticize. Jaw dropping cinematography, excellent acting, amazing special effects and a score to wrap it all in mystique. An almost perfect movie and leaves you thirsty for the next one. This deserves to be watched in the theatres
Edit: watched it a second time in 2024 before part 2. What a movie oof. Simply superb
On the dark side but epic panoramic vistas and well acted pretty good storyline
yes hello hollywood i formally request it be the age of sci-fi space operas from here on out
god i love when producters let amazing things happen. you know a director's good when an ensemble cast doesn't feel like a bunch of a listers thrown together but an actual, cohesive set. oscar isaac did leto's last scene so much justice. i also think i get the timothee hype, finally. and ZENDAYA. AND REBECCA.
hans zimmer has never done a single wrong in his life ever; villaneuve directed a masterpiece; and dneg made every single piece of the vfx feel legit. this was so good what the FUCK.
i wish frank could've seen this.
This movie is excellent. Didn't expect less from Villeneuve.
The highly anticipated Dune is a beautifully crafted piece, directed with great attention to detail. It is perfectly played (really love that energy between Chalamet and Fergusson) and photography is on point. Its overall atmosphere gives it a unique feeling and is definitely where it really shines.
Now this is not a 10/10. And this is not Villeneuve's best movie. The ending is pretty abrupt and some plot inconsistencies can be found... But which adaptation does not have some? Hans Zimmer also made some odd musical choices at some point but they ended up growing on me. But these are minor issues that are not even noticeable the second time you watch the movie.
All in all, that movie really shines in theaters. Find the biggest screen and the best sound system around your place and enjoy the immersion.
9/10 - The challenge was very high and I think Villeneuve plenty nailed it. Can't wait to see the second part!
Trivia:
- I noticed a lot of HR Geiger references. This is a satisfying nod to Jodorowsky's past project!
- The photography director - Greig Fraser - next project is The Batman and that's a very good omen.
All the political angst of Star Wars mixed with the over acting of Dawsons Creek and just a dash of nostalgia memmber berries.
I really liked this movie but I still hate Villeneuve and Jessica deserved better #RetireBitch
100% everything. Really loved this all around.
“Desert power.”
What a gorgeous, atmospheric and tremendous film this is. Denis knows how to tell a story and keep you intrigued while also feeding us some amazing visuals. I didn't know it was going to be a part 1 before going in, so I hope they get to make the second part. Shout out to Greig Fraser who did an amazing job on Cinematography.
[8.8/10] Amazing visuals and music. Loved the "no hand holding" approach into this vast universe. They took leaps with going full steam ahead into the lore and cultures and it was so cool.
Only gripes I can think of were it was pretty slow moving, but I hope that will be paid off later. Also, dialogue was kind of hard to hear sometimes. Chalamet was decent. I didn't LOVE it, but I thought it was a good enough performance.
With those things being said, this move was straight up EPIC and I can't wait to watch it again.
You know when you are watching something truly special when you get goosebumps before the opening credits.
That one line and IMAX room shaking sound was enough to do just that.
Dune is a perfect example of science fiction and an epic triumph in every sense of the phrase.
I am so overcome with emotion that I cannot think of where to start ...
... perhaps I have, and perhaps that is enough.
Go see it, on the biggest screen and loudest sound system you can. You will thank me.
10/10
Really good movie. I read the book many years ago and have watched the original movie and the mini-series. This movie is loaded with stars. There is some initial character development but it doesn't hold your hand or go too in-depth where it doesn't need to. I'm already wanting a 2nd part to finish up the rest of the story.
With that said I do wonder how many people were pissed when the initial text popped up stating "part 1" of the story. Now they need to green light the 2nd part to finish up the rest of the story.
A high-scifi piece of art, DUNE is Denis Villeneuve's grand entry into Frank Herbert's spectacular realm. Tightly following Herbert's vision, the film's world is crafted with ambition and scope we haven't seen since the Lord of the Rings. The pacing, photography and mesmerizing music all add up to create one of the most detailed, overarching ambiances I've seen in a movie. The coherence is just insane.
I like the movie as I liked the books, my criticism is the modern technique of using dark scenes were activity is sound only. Bit of a confidence trick might just as well read the book.
Solid adaptation, and Rebecca Ferguson steals the movie. But where's the rest?
Dune: Part One - :heart:x8
This was an amazing version of Dune. I haven't seen the original Dune (1984) in nearly 40 yrs and should probably go back and rewatch it, but feel like it was really hard to follow and understand the entire storyline back then.
This time around it was a very well done cohesive story - sadly only a half a story - and I desperately hope they get the approval for part 2 of this epic movie.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
Denis Villeneuve is amazing director. Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner - all around amazing works... Well, not really. Pretty much all of them had a weak plotpoint that should ruin overall impression of the film. But his style is somehow keeping them together. Everything works in them as it should at least while you're watching them.
Camera's work in Dune is impressive. Designs are captivating be it a structure or vehicle. Music elevated the scenes. Acting is decent. Plot is comprehensible I would say even straightforward. And the premise of creating a myth, basically Jesus, solely for political and economical gains is interesting and original enough.
But it's seems like either source material is actually incredibly weak or film cut too much of integral parts of the book. It isn't subtle or nuanced. It isn't grounded or philosophical. Middle ground that doesn't feel special. Character's given weakest and the most cliched motives to act upon: the Doctor and Duncan came to mind.
Characters moving from point A to point B because we know it should happen this way to build a character (desert storm and a way out) or move story along ( joining the natives).
At least some characters need the autonomy. Seems like all of them just going through the motions here.
It's ok film. But it also first Villeneuve's film that felt weak to me. First time where his style didn't glue the parts together, didn't distract me from questionable plotpoints.
Okay, first I hated the first Dune, Sting or not. The book and the movie cliche as hell. However, while yes cliche like watching a movie about tthe British empire from the 1600s to late 1800s (thus cliche), this version is better directed, better written, better acted, better in so many ways, even with the cliche pulls you in. By the end, I was like "what? wait, wait, what happens next?!?" The first version was so bad nobody cared. This time I immediately went looking to see if they have Dune 2 in work yet. Not a go yet, but I'm already excited to watch Dune: The Sisterhood. Never expected that but there it is.
Back to the cinema at last and what an epic Film to remind me what i have been missing, Sit back and relax and really pay attention to the story and you will be rewarded with a great visual and auditory experience that is DUNE!
The first book in your eyes to watch. excellent music, awesome acting ,a masterpiece of our times i can't wait for the second book.
The spice must flow.....
One of the greatest movie of our time. Denis Villeneuve's masterclass. It's one of the toughest book to adapt into live action and the movie truely did justice to the source material. Movie captured the core essense of the novel so well and it looks absolutely amazing.
Only thing missing is the Gurney's baliset.
My reaction to this movie is the “I ain’t reading all that. I’m happy for you tho. Or sorry that happened” meme to all the Dune book fans out there. It was honestly very whatever with no real weight or attachment.
Is there going to be a 2nd movie? Feels unfinished compared with the 1984 film. All-star cast of actors. I completely enjoyed the movie.
Great visuals, sound, cast, direction. A great introduction to the world of Dune. The story of a boy that becomes a man. Do not expect a conclusion for all the stories that are being told... There will be a second one. I praise this film for a more than narrative experience.
Can someone answer me this? So there’s one planet that has the ingredient for Interstellar space travel. How did all the other planets get space travel and get to this one planet for this ingredient? Because, the one planet with the ingredient is populated with backward people with no technology.
Excellent in every way  :ok_hand:. Looking forward to part 2.
Simply amazing, what a great movie. It surpassed my expectations, loved it.
Hopefully the second part will be as good as this one. 9 of 10.
David Lynch be like all green with the envy
It could've been 5 hours and I would still be watching it without a second of being bored or distracted, truly beautiful.
For me the only shortcoming was the score, I expected much more from Zimmer
It's as epic as I expected/hoped and a great contender for movie of the year for me. Really looking forward to the next one. The cast didn't disappoint. Although the parallels with Star Wars and/or Lord of the Rings are abundant at times, it didn't bother me. The story has a nice flow to it and even though it's a set up for more movies it gets right into it. There's little to no fluff, which is nice. It's sets up an amazing world that I want to explore more. A really great watch!
I enjoyed the movie, given that I'm not too familiar with the lore of Dune but I will say this, it's a better Star Wars movie than SW ever was.
Having said that, there were moments that the movie yearned for better fight scenes, and to be frank, it's 2021, even babies are accustomed to gore/blood in their movies, so the lack of it in some scenes really was lackluster. That was my main gripe, if they had that in some of the scenes would've been more impactful and it would've gotten a 9/10 from me.
What's the point of this movie? It doesn't make any sense.
i couldn't find a valid link, all links point to older 1980's version, tried both Oath and Crew, Venom
I heard great things about the books and I guess this movie doesn’t capture it.
I find it very boring and slow. Spectacular visual effects and soundtrack of course. But I fee that the direction was not for me.
A bit slow but I recommend watching Blade Runner 2049 or Arrival first. To get used to Denis Villeneuve‘s work. Since he is more about the story, visuals and a lot of dialogue than non-stop action.
The film is like an old school epic that are made much anymore, nevertheless. A stunning and engaging epic.
If you liked this, check out.: Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Dune (1984), FRANK HERBERT'S 'DUNE', Children of Dune
9,5/10
Incredible story, Incredible actors, Incredible score, Incredible filming, Incredible costume - you see everything was incredible
I saw this film last night and it's been a long time, since The Lord of the Rings I suppose, that I haven't been so gripped by a film. I never read the books but I was lucky enough to discover the 1984 movie.
This new version is artistically, in terms of picture, music and direction, a pure masterpiece.
My advise to all those who will go to see this film is to disconnect from your knowledge and/or your preconceptions. Just sit and watch it as if it was the first time you enter the Dune univers.
Like Show and Tell but it's mostly tell.
One of the reasons I loved Blade Runner 2049 was the sheer artistry of the imagery, cohesive story line be damned.
I hoped to find that here as well (Dune was my most anticipated film of the year), but found the cinematography took backseat to the story. What scenery they had here was magnificent, but either Deakins' absence is showing or Villeneuve's choice to emphasize the narrative is telling.
I liked the movie, despite its dissatisfying ending, but I saw it the day of its release in France and had pre-ordered tickets for an IMAX showing three days after... but I ended up canceling those.
I'll see it again in theaters, just to make sure my score is a result of dashed expectations, but this wasn't the Fury Road / Blade Runner 2049 cross over I was hoping for.
It has been all the good I expected and more, Denis Villeneuve is showing off again. Now to wait for the second part.
OMG , Denis Villeneuv you are the man.

everything fits perfectly....
except Timothée Chalamet. Perhaps a recast was in order.
However, I can swallow that!
Dune is finally perfect. So much perfect you can read it from the books :100:
Cheers to Dune! Welcome back Cinema!!!
It was good. But …
-) I didn’t know it was only half the story (half the first book).
-) it was missing an introduction. The world wasn’t explained and the characters weren’t introduced. No problem if you know the book, but hard to follow if you don’t.
-) it’s been quite long for not that much story.
-) it’s exactly the (half) book - no artistic freedom.
I have always been a big fan of any of the dune series.. I remember watching the first one growing as a teenager. Then they did the sci-fi remakes.. which really loved those also. Because it made the movie even longer and kept you in the dune movie. Because I really loved the whole dune thing. Who doenst love worms that can eat cars and city blocks. You can't forget spice... which would be in our real world something like "Mary Jane or Coke". I have been seeing some small previews on hbo I think. Oretty sure there going to put them on digital release like most shows. By the release date it's showing. The previews that I have seen, it's looking good so far.
Dune is one of the best stories ever written.
It's releasing OCT-22-2021, not the 1st.
I really can't wait to see this. Denis Villeneuve is one of the best directors we've seen the past 2 decades
release date delayed to October 1st 2021

my second attempt to watch.
i was bored the whole time that i just made an entertainment out of men ridiculously fighting in 2.0x speed so i could finish it faster. and the sandworm lessened the underwhelming shit i felt.
the cinematography + music + timothee's performance are great nonetheless.
