I am not about to round this one up. Far too many of these episodes were simply "meh" (5/10), or rated "fair" (6/10) only because I rounded that episode's rating up from the 5.5 I wanted to award because Trakt doesn't support point ratings.
Most of this season is missable, honestly.

Yeah… That's about what I expected. A few gems in here, but it's definitely not all the current 89% season rating Trakt might lead you to believe. More than this season's fair share of episodes fall kind of flat, or strain the viewer's credulity with how utterly dumb the characters act. Being a slapstick comedy is no excuse for characters lacking even a shred of common sense.

Sure, fine. It's decent. I've said before that the characters—especially Cory and Eric—change for the worse toward the end of the show, and that was true right up to the end. The series finale brought back Chet Hunter one last time, but didn't even mention Jonathan Turner, which I thought was a real slap in Shawn's face.
Ultimately, it seems like the show tried to change its formula because the actors were getting older and it wasn't believable for them to be in high school any more, so they got rushed through (part of) college before venturing out into the realer world.
I dunno. The series didn't quite hold up to my recollections of it.

Sure, it isn't common for a sitcom like this to have a serious through-line of any kind—especially two decades ago—but boy did this season feel scattered. At some point the writers seemed to entirely forget that Raven and crew were still supposed to be in high school, only to suddenly remember that when an episode's central gag demanded it. And ultimately, the series ends without so much as a single line of dialogue about graduation. Kinda weird.

I can't defer to the average of all my episode ratings, as I usually do, because I did not rate all episodes of this season. Since I've already seen them all at least twice by now, either when I was watching reruns on cable or during my 2014–present long-term project to properly watch the whole series, I'd rather forge ahead.
Maybe I'll return at some point to the episodes I didn't rate—but for now, I just know this was a superb season…so 9/10 it is.

It's a rollercoaster, and (as one might expect) not every show is a winner. But the whole is generally good, even if I've realized during this rewatch that Eric might actually be the more mature Matthews brother. Cory has been selfish and jealous a lot these past couple seasons, and they've both grown of course, but I see now what a great role model Eric could be if Cory would open his eyes.
Eric was too often used as the clown, I think. When I was younger, I just laughed at his gags (obviously the writers' goal). But now, I can see that more down-to-earth stories like the Tommy arc would have done his character a ton of good.

The first half of the season is pretty great. It holds up until the Interhigh arc starts, and entire episodes begin to be devoted to characters from rival high schools' cycling teams. Some of the most boring episodes are these studies of characters we, as the audience, have no reason to care about. In fact, we're predisposed to dislike them because they're competing with Souhoku.
I docked several episodes' ratings for spending far too much time letting Midousuji run his f*cking mouth. We get it: He's an asshole. He also gets much, much more screen time than he deserves… And I'm not entirely sure what's up with his character design. It's like whoever was in charge of designing him thought YowaPeda was going to be a horror anime…
Honestly, I probably would have dropped the show if not for my nephew, who got pretty obsessed with it. (We just finished the last 12 episodes in a 4.5-hour marathon today.) I'm probably stuck continuing, so I hope Midousuji gets the boot (though since he's a first-year, like Onoda, I doubt he will).

Given the glut of 8+ ratings I gave, I'm quite happy rounding this one up. In general, I felt like this show was consistently underrated.

Yeah, that's about right. A few of these are pretty darn great, but many of them are just… not.
6.5/10: The show gets off to a decent start, but several of the episodes in this first season are lackluster. The format they take on near the end, where often Gilligan has a problem that is solved just in time for someone else to acquire the same issue right before the credits (see "A Nose By Any Other Name" and "My Fair Gilligan" for standout illustrations of this) doesn't work for me. But one must watch through season 1 in order to reach the improved (and full color!) remainder of the series.
