Dune Part 2 is visually spectacular. The picture is stunning. Ignoring the worn-out tropes, the problem with the film is the lack of emotional attachment to characters. The scope is too big for its runtime which leads to underdeveloped players. The movie is so impressive, yet hollow.
Much as Avatar took story elements from Dune, Dune takes the questionable box office success of Avatar. Along with that will come those blindly calling this "the greatest movie ever made" vaguely recalling it a decade from now.
Going against concensus here and giving it just 5. Firstly, the movie weas overly long . The first haIf in particular, focussing on the relationship between the leads, was boring. I feel Zendaya brings nothing to the role; her Chani is quite unlikeable and, as someone has mentioned, lacks any chemistry with the lead. I found the cinematography uninspiring., there were very few shots that showed any stunning scenery at all, despite the exclamations of the leads as they look over the dunes. The shots of huge audiences and masses of people were overdone, and looked like a cut and paste job. The special effects for the worms were minimal, with all efforts being focussed on blowing stuff up ... very tedious. On top of all that, they have left out / altered important elements of the story!! Was looking forward to this, but unfortunately, was very disappointed, Wish the TV mini-series had been given this one's budget!
Wow, what happened here?
A Mulan remake had so much potential but it seems like they really phoned this one in. I'm totally cool with them going in a new direction compared to the first one as do the other live action remakes (except for the butchering of Mulan's backstory and turning her into a generic chosen-one), but there are many aspects that make this not a great film on its own.
Not only does the film have no personality or engaging qualities, but the directing and editing are just kind of bad. It's clear this is a high budget film based on the set pieces and costumes, but the cuts are choppy, with weird camera angle decisions and times of poor framing. The pacing is also weird- it's a two hour movie that has a long ramp up with quick climax and ending. This leaves the audience little chance to get attached to the characters. The writing and acting also leave much to be desired- often times empty, awkward, emotionless, and full of plot holes.
If this didn't have the Mulan and Disney brand behind it, it'd instantly be forgotten. This could have been so much better.
GIVE THE DOG AN OSCAR
Could have been a decent horror flick if it hadn't been populated with a bunch of totally unbelievable, illogical assholes.
The only scene that was worth a damn was Paul's speech at the Circle; the rest of the movie felt like watching a trailer for a graphic novel adaptation of the book. The dialogue for the most part was atrocious, especially for the Harkonnens. Zendaya's line delivery and mannerisms were too "American", compared to the other Fremen, breaking the Middle Eastern-inspired atmosphere.
In 2024, conflating the terms "psychotic" and "psychopathic" is inexcusable. How the fuck did none of the story editors/producers pick that one up?
Good for teenage girls and guys trying to get with teenage girls, impress them, or have something to talk about with them. For anybody else, super meh.
Horrible movie. It has nothing to do with Arthur or Camelot (the title and characters are misleading) , it's more of a mash up of LOTR , Conan , Warcraft and many other movies combined with bad acting and questonable script. Don't waste your time.
It's so uninspired it hurts my very soul.
The first one was great I thought, despite people labelling it slow, I found it interesting because of the introduction of the world and the characters. This one needed a little more pace. It drags for soo long. And the Bene Gesserit crap is getting irritating. The whole seeing the future is very dumb and gets in the way of engaging with the film. The prophecy/false prophecy discussion is interesting but again, it doesn't have any real weight on what's happening. The romance is kinda rushed. The visuals are top notch. But you can't rely on that to save you again. Also the Paul transition seemed to happen overnight with no buildup. Went south, drank poison bam I'm your leader now. In the end, you realize that not much really happened in the movie, no resolution of any kind. Felt like a two-and-a-half-hour episode with the next one probably coming 3 years later. 6.5/10
Pretty enjoyable to watch overall, and I'll certainly take this over no more Last Kingdom at all... but holy moly the pacing of it was breakneck. They could've made an entire season out of this. It would've also been nice to actually have time to spend on, like, character development. (Maybe especially for Aethelstan? Like a redemption/come-to-his-senses arc that feels a little less like "OOPSIE!")
I could have done better on the script
overkill!! if you were on the fence with the first, this one is going to push you over.
had to much going on and far too few thread too hold it all together
Absolutely disappointing rehash of the first trilogy. Disney had a real opportunity to do something new and exciting with this ipr but resorted to rushed writing with an extremely compressed story that makes no sense and fails to make anyone care for the characters or events. Emo Kylo is an outstanding metaphor for the whole deal.
Really poorly written. Can't believe there were so many predictable moments and moments filled with complete and utter pathos. So, so dissappointed.
Can't remember the last time a movie made me cry this much. Such a powerful movie, with great scenes, romance, laughter, tears through sadness and joy. I can't say I've seen a lot of war movies, but this one really opened my eyes, very well directed with great actors. I can't get over how strong this movie was, oh my god my face is still puffy and I feel so emotionally drained thinking about every person who has ever gone to war, either died fighting for what they thought was right or coming back and having to deal with losing so many friends and most having to live with PTSD. Wow, what a movie.
Mockingjay Part 2's biggest mistake is being completely faithful to the book, considering that it is the worst one of the trilogy. They had the chance to make the story better but chose to stick to what they had. Being the final chapter of the story, it has emotional bits, but miserably (and unfortunately) fails to sell them, rushing the scenes which we were supposed to remember the most. However, its political and action turmoils are its best parts and were beautifully developed. After all, piecing the four movies together, it remains a good story.
I don't undestand the 9/10 and 10/10 reviews, in my opinion this movie is way overhyped.
I will give, that the actors performance is amazing, but then it's only famous people.
My main problem with the movie is, that nothing interesting happens, its basically like every other tragedy released over the last decade - just with DC's IP behind it.
There are entire segments in which literally nothing happens in the first 60m minutes which were a snoozefest, the character is walking somewhere and its followed by another scene in which, you guessed it: also nothing happens.
I only enjoyed the last 20 minutes, although they didn't hold a single unforseen twist either...
bs movie
This movie, right off the bat, makes some smart creative decisions: it doesn’t try to imitate the original too much, and it’s not a musical.
They even steer away from the usual Disney formula by taking away the funny sidekick.
And while the film is technically quite impressive (cinematography and score are top notch), I found it to be ultimately unengaging.
Also, there seems to be a correlation between big, feminist action movies and poor lead performances.
I mean, just do the math: Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and now Mulan.
Yes, I also find it important that more of these movies get made (not corporate, tame Disney films, but female driven action movies in general), but they deserve to be a lot better than this.
Problem is, if nobody sees it, chances are execs will take the wrong lesson from it, and think people don’t want to see female/Asian representation, or feminist themes.
So, we’re kinda fucked regardless, but I still don’t find that an excuse to give a heavy push to this mediocre movie, as I see some journalists doing.
5/10
Simply beautiful...
What a man he was!
God bless your soul Doss.
I cried, every time, admitted.
People seem to either love or hate this film. Personally I love it. It's a great story of aliens on earth and their situation is a commentary on real life refugees. Overall the film has a gritty documentary feel that gives it an added edge.
If you liked the other ones then you will probably like this one. There is a decent amount of action but man there are a lot of eye roll moments too. The more I thought about it during the movie the more I start to side with WCKD. Those kids need to look at the big picture of the entire human race.
This is neither an action fireworks nor has it endless battle scenes. You should know that before you watch.
It is a slow build up that can be percieved as running a bit too long. But I really liked it. It's an honest movie, well produced. It looks and feels real. And so does the battle once it takes place. I so appreciate doing this not in CGI but putting the camera right in the middle of it. As for the historical accuracy or how it relates to the source material, I do not know. But it also isn't that important to me as this is a movie that, first and foremost, is there to entertain.
All actors are doing really well but Sean Harris was the one who really stood out in my opinion.
Waste of time A bad story. Lots of plot holes nothing is explained. There is No emotion for any of the characters. Rey is so over powered its laughable This Feels like three movies rolled into one. With Lots of wtf moments. This is a pathetic and insulting End to this 40 year epic franchise started by george lucas. avoid this movie at all cost don't waste your time like i did. AVOID.
Basically, it's a 150-minute trailer for the sequel(s).
totally and completely disappointing. The influence of Disney was more than obvious, what was with all the comic relief? this is star wars not The princess bride. The casino scene was totally out of scope, Luke was out of character and completely bad, and of course there was no plot or story, just a Mashup of the first three star wars. I want to thank all the actors and director who ruined the movie.
