I don't understand why they have to put a black person as a leader or a wife for somebody everytime.

@nicol1212 that's a lot of progress both for women and non-whites i'd say. 50 years ago we wouldn't have a women as a leader nor a portrayal of a mixed relationship.

I stopped watching halfway through episode 9 of season 7, and the show was one of my top 5 favorite shows on TV still airing, so it is really as bad as you say. This is mainly the fault of Eric Wallace, who is the worst showrunner ever, worse than Guggenheim (Arrow's showrunner).

Season 1: 9/10 (Amazing, one of the best seasons of the entire show)
Season 2: 9/10 (As good as Season 1)
Season 3: 8/10 (Great season but the villain is less cool and there are less good episodes)
Season 4: 7/10 (Good season overall but mediocre ending)
Season 5: 6/10 (Decent first half with Cicada, Terrible second half with Cicada II)
Season 6: 5/10 (Decent first half with Bloodwork, Mediocre second half with Mirror Monarch)
Season 7: 4/10 (The entire season sucks)

If you look at the showrunner per season, it's easy to see the reason why the show got worse over time.

Season 1 was led by Andrew Kreisberg
Season 2 was led by Andrew Kreisberg, Gabrielle Stanton, Aaron Helbing, and Todd Helbing
Season 3 was led by Andrew Kreisberg, Aaron and Todd Helbing
Season 4 was led by Andrew Kreisberg and Todd Helbing

And then Andrew Kreisberg was fired by the production team of The Flash because of sexual harassment accusations, there were even men who accused him, so he was a bisexual predator. I'm not saying that they should have kept Andrew Kreisberg, but they should have at least replaced him with someone who was able to provide the same level of quality as before.

So then, Season 5 was led by Todd Helbing. It was still pretty decent in my opinion, except for the part with Cicada II, but still there were some great parts with the Reverse Flash, which was my favorite character on the show, which Tom Cavanagh played so well.

But then, Todd Helbing had to leave because he felt like the show was preventing him from spending time with his family, he had children and wanted more time to spend with them and his wife, so he quit.

So, for Season 6 and Season 7, the CW chose Eric Wallace, and of course, they had no way of knowing what he would do with the show and it ended in disaster. And now, because of him, the ratings are worse than they have ever been. And there are only some fanboys/fangirls on Reddit who are blinded by fandom so much that they praise him, because most people hate what Eric Wallace has done with the show.

The main problem that the CW has is that it hires bad showrunners sometimes and instead of firing them, they let them stay, no matter how bad the ratings get. I have nothing against gender diversity, sexual diversity, or ethnic diversity, but it should never be seen as a replacement for good writing and a good cast of actors. The best actors of this show are mainly Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells/Reverse Flash) and Jesse L Martin (Joe West).
Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon) and Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) were also pretty good but their characters are being removed in order to be replaced by worse characters.

And the worst thing is that it doesn't take a genius to write good episodes of The Flash. Eric Wallace could have just given to the fans what they wanted instead of sacrificing quality for SJW politics and everyone would have been happy and the ratings would have been great. With the CGI that they have access to, it doesn't take much to make a fun show that lots of people will want to see.

The main things that are missing this season are (from most important to less important):

1) A good main villain (like Reverse Flash, Zoom and Devoe)
2) Good side villains (like Captain Cold, King Shark, Grodd, The Trickster, Pied Piper, Abra Kadabra, Vandal Savage)
3) A good cast of actors (The original main cast from season 1)
4) Enough episodes that focus on the story, and filler episodes should be at least more entertaining than those that focus on the story. Supernatural did this very well with episodes like "Mystery Spot", "Changing Channels", "The French Mistake", "Scoobynatural", "LARP and The Real Girl", "Ghostfacers", "Fan Fiction", "Yellow Fever", "The Real Ghostbusters", "Bad Day at Black Rock", "Time After Time".
5) Lots of action and only a bit of drama, but not too much so that it doesn't become a soap opera
6) Some progression of the characters, especially The Flash's powers and his speed should be getting better each season like how Clark's speed in Smallville kept getting better and better from season 1 to season 10. And if they are going to give lots of screen time to Allegra, then we should be seeing her using her powers a lot more, she almost never uses them. This show has great CGI that it almost never uses, and it's not like it costs too much because once you have the equipment for the CGI, it doesn't cost more money to add more since it is made from the computer, so they are just being lazy because the showrunner Eric Wallace is lazy.
7) More surprising plot twists throughout the season
8) Less useless dialogue and less cringey dialogue (with 45 minutes of runtime per episode, they should be able to do a lot more, even with their limited budget)
9) More screen time for the characters that people want to see (especially The Flash) and less screen time for side characters
10) More crossover events than just 1 per year. Crossovers are what people want to see, and since all the shows are filmed in the same studio, it shouldn't be very difficult to do it.

My prediction is that if the CW doesn't fire Eric Wallace, they will keep the show running until they start losing money, because although the ratings are bad, if they are still letting him run the show, it must be because they are satisfied with the profits, because the production of TV shows is always about making money, not necessarily pleasing the consumers, unlike in other industries, where public opinion would matter more.

Many people are so picky about the shows that they choose to watch that they will say that everything that the CW has ever made is bad, but the truth is that although it cannot match the level of quality of HBO or AMC shows, the CW is still able to make great TV shows on some occasions when they have a good enough showrunner. People often use Arrow and The Flash as examples to mock the CW but they forget that it's the same network which also made Smallville and Supernatural, both of which were extremely successful, so it's not the network that is to blame, it's the showrunners that the network picked. But even big studios like Warner Bros make that mistake a lot by hiring people like Zack Snyder or Joss Whedon to direct their movies, which makes them end up with bad ratings. I think that is because it is impossible to predict how well a showrunner will be, because even if you look at their history, it doesn't guarantee that their future work will be as good as what they made in the past since there are only a few directors who are able to maintain the same level of quality over many decades (guys like Quentin Tarantino).

I really wish the show either gets fixed or cancelled so that everyone can finally get what they want or just move on. And I am especially curious as to what will be Grant Gustin's next acting job after The Flash because he has a really good level of acting talent and he has a great singing voice too.

Good comment but, you do know its people who make CGI. The computers themselves don’t make CGI, people are needed.

The Sandman: 1x04 A Hope in Hell

I really want to love this show, it has a lot of potential, but something just feels off.

The whole John storyline just feels very dull and generic, and Dream himself is kinda boring. I kinda liked what they were doing with the fight/challenge in Hell, but if we're being honest, it was kinda dumb. Why would Lucifer even start by saying "I am a direwolf" if she could have just said she was one of the better things right away? After that challenge happens once, it would never have to happen again because they'd very quickly find what can't be beaten. The little pep talk the raven gave Dream took me right out of the scene too - really not liking the voice actor at all.

Last thing I wanna say is that I feel that the show is constantly trying to have these sort of 'epic' moments. They have nice visuals and great music to create these moments. But the problem is, these moments haven't been earned. They fail to actually be epic or memorable because none of the characters are overly strong and we haven't had much reason to like any of them. The only character I've seen anyone really caring about was the female Constantine last episode - but it doesn't seem like she's going to be a big part of the show other than that one episode.

The show isn't bad, it's entertaining and an alright watch. But certain things in the writing are just preventing it from going from okay to good/great. Not sure if that's just because of the source material, or if it's because Netflix messed something up.

The Gilded Age: 1x02 Money Isn't Everything

All the right elements are there, but I am not sure why it doesn’t work. It simply doesn’t have … spirit. I remember near identical themes and events in Downton Abbey (which, btw isn’t a coincidence - same producers, they even play strongly into it by having a suspiciously similar opening track). They worked there perhaps because I was much more bought into the lives of the characters. Things have been much shallower here. The maid (Edit: Chef apparently, that's how little the event grabbed me) gets in trouble with her debtor, for instance, and resorts to stealing. While this is meant to evoke sympathy, I simply didn’t care because I know little about the character. Even so, like I said, I am not quite sure why it doesn’t work, but it doesn’t.

Unfortunate, but this is a drop.

loading replies

@magic_claw i notice the little details regarding what you're saying, for example, Ms Van Ryen and her sister were standing with arms stretched down, i feel like in Downton Abbey they would be holding their hands together up to the stomach, little things that show class, which is what the producers are trying to portray in both shows, but here it fails a lot, also, the sets look very fake, the castle in Downton was very much real.

@smarterperson do people really feel like vomiting just bc watching someone else do it? feels more like an automatic response to discomfort much like covering the eyes (when you're young) or feeling weird when watching a sex scene with someone by your side, the image is so unsettling, by societal standarts, that it would be scary if we remained unchanged and indifferent to it, making us the ones that are sick in the head.

Also, I believe that (what I percieve as) woke persons should go and watch and support the movies they SOOOO wanted, while the rest of us wait for something actually worth watching, like 'Spider-man: No Way Home' ... that movie was a nice escape from the political dump this world has become.

The Expanse: 1x03 Remember the Cant

I have to be honest, I really don't understand the factions and politics present here. Am I not paying enough attention, or is the show doing a poor job of explaining?

My only impressions so far:
- OPA: some kind of terrorist group. Bad.
- Belters: Gangs, criminals, violent, corrupt. Bad.
- Earth: elite, ignorant of others plight. Bad.
- Mars: isolationist, seen as a threat by everyone. Bad.

Surely this can't be right?

However, this episode was better for characters. People really seem to dislike each other but at least there was some reasoning behind it this time.

loading replies

OPA is an independence movement, for now not yet a terrorist group. They would be considered one if they actually destroyed the Cant.

The White Lotus: 1x06 Departures

A good finale. I guess I did wanted a bit more of black and white in this show. The portrayals are great, the satire is good, but I think it needed just a bit less, just a bit less, of gray areas. Like, don't give any triumphant tone to a finale where all the rich people get away with everything.

Just to clarify, I think it's a great way to end, in a sour note, just make that sour note a bit more obvious (focus, soundtrack, etc), and not end with the liberating tone of the white kid going for his dream.

loading replies

@funger92 i guess the rich people getting away with everything and the workers being the only ones who suffer is indeed the triumphant finale. it's not a good conclusion but its what we have no? isn't that the world we live in today ?

Zack Snyder's Justice League

Although I did enjoy the whole 4 hours ( with breaks of course ) and with respect to Snyder's vision of color reproduction and decision to go for the 1.33:1 aspect ratio " adding more visual content " .. I found it stupid because the whole world watched it on TV with black bars or cropped to fit the full screen and thus having little content invisible. I went for the cropped in an attempt to enjoy the full screen experience for an hour or so, then switched to the intended 1.33:1 aspect and swallowed my pride for the remaining duration of the movie.

I enjoy cliff hangers a lot... They leave something to the mind to wonder about rather than brining the story to an end.

Additional characters reveal was a plus especially one specific beloved member of the league... Which got me excited and looking forward to future installments of the movie.

I don't usually have a lot to say about films I enjoyed.... So that's that.

Queer as Folk for a new generation or an older generation looking at the past. Russell T Davies's new gay drama didn’t disappoint in it's first episode.

It covered all the usual RTD’s bases:

Humour
Sex
Darkness
Imminent tragedy

The story is the rise of the AIDs virus in London during the 1980’s which is very prescient for the 2020’s. It does feature some worrying parallels with 2020/21, even at this early stage of the series.

Olly Alexander didn’t disappoint in his first serious role and it will good to see more of him in future (not that there’s much more left of him to see after the first episode!).

Neil Patrick Harris also delivered an excellent and touching performance in both main aspects of the show with some excellent one liners and comedic moments, but also the darker elements.

Callum Scott-Howells also deserves mention for a very accurate portrayal of Colin. Someone who we've all been at some part of our lives and readily recognise in others. It will be interesting to see how his character develops.

Music wise it is spot on, the direction and photography also spot on. 1981 lives again (thankfully only on TV).

The urge to binge the lot is rising, but I’ll try to resist. Oh well, if you insist, maybe just one more.

This was such an enjoyable episode. Mr. Mxyzptlk was a good villain and Kara was an absolute badass. I didn't know drinking orange juice could be sassy, but she totally pulled it off. And the way she tricked him was so damn clever. But somehow I think Clark will have something to say about her destroying the statue of his dad.

Can we please get a break from men falling in love with Kara? I get it. I really do. I'm in love with her too. But let that poor girl rest. First Winn's feelings for her almost ruined their friendship, then the guy she just wanted to mentor started pursuing her, and in this episode a dude literally threatened to destroy the world to get her to marry him. Stop. She doesn't need this shit. She needs a hug, a dog and a chance to focus on herself instead of some ain't-shit fuckboy who thinks that he can get away with not listening to her and being the epitome of toxic masculinity, and that respecting her is a super impressive thing to do. No, dickhead, you don't promise to respect her just because she's mad at you and you want to get her off your back. You respect her because it's what decent people do. Also because she's obviously smarter and more experienced than you, and she's the best, kindest, most selfless person you'll ever meet. She deserves respect and that trashcan of a person is only willing to give it to her when it's convenient for him. This is why I hate Mon-El. The bar is set so fucking low for him at this point - just like for any other cishet white male in the history of everything - and he still fails to reach it. And he gets the girl anyway. This is bullshit.

Wow, good for Winn. I'm really happy for him. I definitely want to see more of Lyra. Let's just hope that she doesn't turn out to be evil, or the DEO might just officially ban Winn from dating ever again.

Maggie is a nerd who loves bonsai trees. Your fave could never. And her story absolutely broke my heart. I had tears in my eyes when she was telling it. She's a good, pure cinnamon roll that needs to be protected at all costs. I wish she got enough screentime for us to actually get to know her. She's such an interesting character with so much potential, but she practically doesn't exist outside of her relationship with Alex. I mean, I adore Sanvers. I live for Sanvers. And what Maggie did for Alex at the end of the episode made me weep like a little bitch. But let her be her own person too.

Oh, and stop interrupting beautiful, moving, heartwarming Sanvers scenes with Karamel crap. This isn't the first time this has happened and I hate it.
