That dancing scene is so embarrassing! But it was fun to watch for nostalgia's sake.
All the jokes are sex jokes, of the most unfunny, vulgar and obvious kind.
I wish the sci-fi element had been a little stronger. But it was a quite decent action film!
This was so extremely cute! I enjoyed it more than the movies.
Very reminiscent of Japanese cult-classic Audition. But with the interesting twist of a collaboration.
Despite not being very stylish, this is an incredibly fun movie, and I am really happy to have taken the time to watch it. It is a short feature that showcases some of the most beloved horror trends of the 80's, and it has a rather funny script as well! Some elements were just strange and amusing (that weird painting in the Goldman house?), which made it remarkable and gave me and my friend endless reasons to talk about the movie for hours after.
Thanks, IMS Paulista for choosing this film as their cinema contribution to the 2019 Virada Cultural!
Above all things, it's just very relatable.
This movie has a great combination of a fun story, funny main character and a good message. I can't find a flaw with it, and I think it's not so much a rom-com parody, but a twisty rom-com, where romance happens not between two people, but between one person and herself. And yes, everyone has been saying this forever, but it has not really translated into movies, until these recent Netflix films (Nappily Ever After, Dumplin' and Isn't It Romantic). I like what they are doing, and I want more.
If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you're gonna love somebody else, right?
Such a pity the editing is weird, the story is just so entertaining! And the characters are all easy to get into, I was curious about everyone at every moment, the plot about the phone frauds is that intriguing!
Unfortunately, the editing made it confusing to tell the difference between flashbacks of the past and simultaneous events. Also, the soundtrack was not great either... and I still enjoyed the movie! Definitely worth checking it out.
The movie was light-hearted, funny, and crazy, and I loved every minute of it. I got into the main characters as I had not in a while. It also made very humorous use of the rising ultra-right conservative movements, which is particularly relatable to Brazilians (just put Neymar in place of Diamantino!).
The premisse is very interesting and the spaceship setting is just beautiful. Jim turns into a dislikeable character pretty fast though, and it is hard to like Aurora when we feel sorry for her all the time. The dramatic climax feels like a mixture of Armaggedon and Titanic, as weird as it may sound, but it is rather exciting. The ending is of the feel-good variety, and I have no complaints.
Overall, a solid 6, which is only disappointing because the rather common story feels like a great injustice to the lavish visuals.
The longer I watched it, the lower my rating for it got... and well, I quit at about halfway. It's pretty, but even that is not much of an advantage, as I feel like these scenarios are not exactly new? It honesly felt like your standard magical forest, and being high-res did not make up for the lack of creativity.
It's a very cute movie featuring a great main character who is a horrible person, a secondary character who was supposed to be a horrible person but goes through a believable positive development, and their lovely friendship. The soundtrack is great too, as expected from a piece with such a John Hughes influence.
I knew Shannon Purser from Stranger Things, and I was kind of expecting Sierra and Barb to be similar, since they are from the same outcast mold, but they could not be more different. I am impressed with Purser for being able to play such different personalities into the same stereotype. Also, Froseth is so pretty I do not think she is human... maybe she is from an advanced alien race, taking a vacation on Earth?
But going back to "Sierra is a bad person but a great character", oh, wow. I do not think I have ever disliked a rom-com heroine this much, EVER. Specially in a teen movie! Still, it was cute and entertaining, and Noah deserves a main role, soon. Here, it felt like he was there for decoration, which is sad, because he has a lot of charisma on-screen.
Definetely the most vulgar adaptation of the three. The cast is actually not bad; but they did change the way characters were played. Carrie is way darker here, and her original sweetness is never shown at all. Sue is bolder, and she seems to have a righteous goal rather a mindset split between guilt and kindness. Even Chris, while still super mean, is more bitter than the book and the other adaptations made her out. I think these changes were fitting considering high school culture of the early 2000's, but the boys were a complete disappointment. Tommy Ross, who is supposed to be so nice and likable, came out as Sue's toy and nothing more. Billy Nolan, such a questionable character in the book, appears totally uninteresting as well.
What made the movie vulgar was just how strong they made every "strange" aspect about Carrie. Everything felt forced about her life, it was all even bigger and louder than the book, even her early displays of power. Even without two other movies for comparison, this would still be a questionable piece... specially if you add the soundtrack for consideration.
This was a very particular type of torture.
The articles about how scary this movie is were certainly paid for. Very basic movie. Though Sandra Escacena is a far superior actress to your average scream queen.
I thought the movie was a pleasant watch. Not really scary, but with good visuals, acting and a nice atmosphere. I did not mind the plot either. I think it was just not exciting, but I enjoy slow-paced stories when they are well edited, and this one was.
The acting gets rather cringy at times, but the movie is pretty cute.
It is a tough sell, to think the whole world would play a game and that it would spill out into the streets and all. I could not get totally into the film because I did not feel like the what they built really supported that, but the movie was still very fun. Various references certainly made a lot of people happy, and the minor appearance of RX-78-2 was right on my nerd alley.
Of course people will immediately think of other sci-fi titles for comparison and reference, but what I enjoyed about Annilation is that it is basically Alice in Wonderland, except where Alice is a biologist, and Wonderland is an area of genetic corruption. I was intrigued, and entertained, and I enjoyed the visuals, which were curious and beautiful, but not over-done. One flaw is that out of four characters we only really get to know one.
The acting was actually very good, and the atmosphere felt just right. But while the movie is only 90 minutes long, it felt like it dragged a bit. The flashback scenes specially were quite lackluster and did not feel very intriguing. I think they should have dropped a few more interesting pieces in those, so we may take a curiosity on the character's personalities and not only in the events, which were not that surprising, anyway. It is not that terrible, but I agree with the other comment that says it is forgettable.
There are many problems with the movie. But for some reason, I was terribly distracted by Taryn's absurd use of boots. Does she sleep with them, or is she very particular about wearing boots right out of bed to walk around the house?
If someone cares to explain, I have a question: Why did the fake fireman turned on them only after his tattoos were discovered? The only reason why they were didcovered is because he meant to help Kylie by making a torniquette with his jacket. So why did his intentiond turn 180°?
Otherwise, besides the questionable plot, there is the too long pre-earthquake part in which you just get to hate all the characters, and the really bad acting. To end it all, the final scene features the least convincing CGI wave you will ever see in your life. Just terrible.
There is not much I like about this movie. Every scene made me feel uncomfortable or second-handly embarrassed. Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris are very charming leads, but ugh, I am not amused by seeing people messing up and acting stupid. I could not wait for it to be over! I actually do prefer the Lohan/Curtis remake.
Well, was that not extremely unsatisfying? I am not complaining about the story, which I thought was kind of decent. It invoked many themes from traditional Indian tales, such as a revenge, betrayal, forgiveness and sacrifice in a context of true love. But everything else is at least questionable. The editing feels very choppy at the beginning, and though that improves, the effects really do not, specially regarding Veer's state - at one point, when he is doing the whole "descending the staircase with backward bent limbs", it is very visible that it is just a dummy, and the make up is so obviously a mask that it feels wrong to even use the word make-up. Then there is the extremely awkward romantic song montages, that I just cannot even grasp - I feel pretty confident that are better ways to make a backstory come to light instead of that. It was not a terrible movie to see, but I would not recommend it to anyone... unless you enjoy laughing at the absurd flaws as you go along.
I love the book. The movie basically misses on everything that was important. I cannot believe the author actually helped adapting this.
The dialogues were so unoriginal! It was like a generic-version of a fantasy tale, they got the bones for it, but could not really flesh it.
Those were the most awkward and uncomfortable sex scenes I have ever seen.
Camera-wise, I just have no clue of what was this movie trying to accomplish. Some angles are shot in a way that looks similar to found footage, but the rest of the shots are perfectly standard. It is a very weird and distracting mix, specially when you add the heat vision-style shots that represent the point of view of the beast.
Then there is the bizarre take on Celtic mithology, in which Tuatha Dé Danann comes to mean leprechaun, as found in a mysteriously ancient book with very modern print.
I can deal with bad and cliche characters inhorror, you know. But those two things were just so wrong, I had to feel bothered!
I did not see many reasons to cry watching Wonder, but I definitely smiled many times. It is just adorable. I found it a bit more touching than the book, even. And the Passion Pit song at the end caught me totally off-guard, it was a perfect conclusion.
