The Last of Us: 1x03 Long, Long Time

This singular episode, which I initially didn’t think I would like in the beginning, became more incredible than entire movies. It was beautiful, poetic and entirely self encapsulated in a tiny little world where people can still pick out their little slice of happiness.

To all those who hated the episode, replace bill with a female in your head if you have to, but open your eyes to why this story was so fulfilling and poetic in a world filled with meaningless death and endless suffering.

An incredibly wholesome Anime about life, loss, and being kind. A worthwhile show.

Edit: The third season started slow but wow was it incredible. It really made for a phenomenal story and a beautifully orchestrated closure.

Good Will Hunting

Truly amazing film. This makes me miss Robin Williams all that more and I can't believe I hadn't seen this film before. The combination of intelligence and and endless supply of witty remarks makes the dialogue between characters both powerful and entertaining.

Steins;Gate

There are so many flaws in this series if you look at each episode closely. There are plot-holes, things that don't quite make sense, and things that just seem strange. But then you take a look back at the series and the way it weaves and turns like a crazy ball of string, you realize how masterfully done the story was. It felt like a crazy, disordered story because that's symbolic of the "weebly wobbly, timey wimey stuff". But despite all the timeline shenanigans, I followed the story without issue.

The first 10 episodes start very linearly and get you setup. Then I hope you were paying attention, because things start to get crazy.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and I'd recommend it to pretty much everyone. This show has like 8 genres and it does a great job with each one of them.

A Silent Voice: The Movie

This was such an incredibly powerful movie. Even a couple days later after watching it, I keep coming back to it, feeling like I should watch it again. Either I might’ve missed something the first time or maybe I just want to ride the roller coaster again. There’s an incredible gravity to this film just keeps trying to pull me back in. I play the scenes again and again in my head and the emotions of it all swell within me.

This was such a moving journey of bullying, self-hate, suicide, and perhaps, redemption. I will never think about the depression around me the same way, and because of this movie, I will never, ever hesitate to reach out to those around me. Just one hand can pull someone back from the brinks of despair and every life is worth it.

Clannad: Season 2

This season is so beautiful and emotional, sad and happy, dark and bright. A good romance Anime can replicate similar feelings to the first season of Clannad. A boy and a girl meet, they slowly fall in love, and by the last episode, they admit their feelings. The second season of Clannad is what all the fans always ask for: The "after story."

And I can't imagine a better after story than this one. I openly admit I cried in far more episodes than any other Anime. Both out of sadness and happiness. Because that's what makes this Anime so amazing. It is full of ups and downs and has themes of growing up, life, the changing world, and more.

Just beautiful. 10/10

Kaguya-sama: Love is War: 2x11 Yu Ishigami Closes His Eyes, Part 3 / Miyuki Shirogane and Yu Ishigami / Kyoko Otomo Doesn't Realize

Now this was an episode worth seeing the series for. Certainly different from the general tone that the series has had so far, but a worthwhile excursion from it.

Great Pretender

Wow this Anime took me by surprise! To be honest, it reminded a lot of an American show called Leverage. That series was what first made me love the tricks and twists that a good show about con artistry and grifting is really about. The first season was fantastic, light-hearted and hilarious right when it needed to be.

But right when I thought I had the show figured out, season 2 changed things up. Suddenly there were some deep and dramatic themes, the ideas of learning from your history and moving on from traumatic life experiences. There was so much behind each character's motivation, and all along, the viewer needs to decipher truth from fiction!

Despite the Netflix tag attached, this has easily become one of my favorites. I will say that it feels slightly less like the Anime you might be used to, but personally I think that is less because of the Netflix puppetry, and more because this show is truly designed for an international audience.

Amazing show, I would highly recommend it.

If you are looking to take something out of this Anime, treasure the small things in life, but above all, treasure the gift of life, friendship, and family. There are rarely any do-overs and you only get one. And for the people who do treasure it, their hopes and dreams will lift them up.

Just beautiful. 10/10

The Legend of Hei

I came in to this fairly low expectations and I was absolutely wowed by whole movie. The animation had a cute quality to it but got incredibly vast and scenic for just the right moments. The music soared and flowed like a river throughout the film, matching the animation and the story progression perfectly. As for the story, it was really quite well done. It was highly reminiscent of Princess Mononoke (another fantastic film that you should watch) with the idea of spirits coexisting with humans despite the human evolution destroying their homes. The various amounts of comedic relief were well done and got a few chuckles out of me. The film explored the concepts of duality in all things quite well so that even a child (such as the child Hei) could understand.

Okay, I have to concur here. That was an absolutely beautiful ending to this series. And man am I a sucker for these perfect Tsundere arcs.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III. Spring Song

Another superb film. The action was some ufotables best work and the animation was overall just incredible to watch. Not to mention the story and the twisting plot lines of motivation and long made plans was incredibly well done. Some things aren't made perfectly clear to those more unfamiliar with over-arching story (since its quite complex), but most everything was implied or briefly hinted at, making the movie incredibly faithful to the story and the complexities of the world that contains it. I'd highly recommend this trilogy to anyone who has watched Fate stay night. This trilogy truly brings the story into a living piece of artwork.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II. Lost Butterfly

I wasn't the biggest fan of the first Heaven's Feel movie (likely because it feels slow to someone already familiar with all the setup). But wow these movie took the challenge and went absolutely marvelous! There was so much detail and incredible action scenes and the story went into such depth about each character's motivations, and I could just go on and on about every little facet of this movie felt incredible. And yes it got very dark, very quickly. If you suffer from PTSD on the subject of sexual abuse, you have been warned.

Overall, such an incredibly powerful film, I'm so glad that I got into the Fate/Stay Night series. ufotable has done a praise-worthy job of bringing this story to film.

Princess Mononoke

This might be one of the best Anime movies I've seen, despite being over 20 years old at this point! The beautiful hand-drawn animations and moving music create a magical yet imperfect world. An imperfectly human world. This movie holds its ground against the many movies that depict the Humanity vs Nature archetype. You cannot help but be provoked by the fragility of life and the depiction of life and death in the movie perfectly describes how life ebbs and flows. All of this heavy and philosophical reasonings about life are nestled within a story that even a child could understand. No character seems to be truly evil, and the only one that seems truly good is Prince Ashitaka. But even he is struggling with his corruption.

This was a masterful story that kept me in awe and entertained all the while a philosophy of life was weaved throughout. Well done Studio Ghibli.

Your Name.

Wow this was a great one! The music and animation alone were breathtakingly beautiful. Shinkai has always had marvelous animation quality but this was his best work so far. And the choice of RADWiMPS for the music was clearly the right decision. Because the lead singer is also fluent in English, it has allowed this film's music to reach an incredibly wide audience. After watching sub and dub, you can hardly tell that the film wasn't originally intended for English only viewers, the impact is still wonderful. If you haven't really gotten into Anime (Japanese animations), then this film is for you. Just watch it, and enjoy the ride.

ERASED

Incredibly well done Anime. The characters were well fleshed out and interesting and despite having a fairly simple twist on the world, it makes for a really cool story. For seasoned detective show watcher's, it may be too easy to figure out "who's who." But I still found that I enjoyed it just as much even if I held the correct suspicions well before the reveal. The story was well worth my time and I found myself quite attached to the characters.

Fairy Tail: Season 7

I actually found this season fairly interesting as an origin story for the fairy tail guild. There was of course the usual fairy tail "friendship always wins" theme, but they were some more interesting themes that fairy tail really hasn't explored before.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

This felt like a really solid Isekai Anime! There was quite a bit of the standard pervy-tropes, but the scenes in this one felt more comical than some of the others I've seen that dove headfirst into Harem-land. (Although I am slightly concerned for the fact that there are clear romances between children here. The only defense I can think of is that age seems to be very different from appearances and that age/mental maturity isn't standard either.)

The fantasy world building here is quite fantastic and the characters you meet have distinct personalities and stories to them. The animation quality is decent enough, and the music is thematic. Overall, I'm excited to see where this one goes.

Haikyu!!

This is quite possibly the best sports Anime you may find out there! The action, the ups and downs, it all feels so good to watch. I can easily lose track of the hours watching this show. Some of the deeper themes can be a tad repetitive or shallow, but they do make some strong arguments and explain the complex emotions of the players as if it were nothing. Great Anime!

Howl's Moving Castle

The colors are so incredibly vibrant! Studio Ghibli’s animation quality really shines through here. Paired with the excellent soundtrack, this was one incredibly atmospheric Anime movie.

The story immediately sets up such an incredible sense of intrigue. This film just has so much character. Without spoiling too much, I will say that the interconnected characters and developments kept me well entertained. Right up until the beautiful illustrated and quite happy ending. While the end might have been rushed, it was just like a fairy tale ending and I don’t think I would rather end a fairy tale any other way.

Overall, it was a truly phenomenal story that was quite suitable for all ages.

Sometimes a show can make you realize, you weren’t just supposed to be skipping along and watching each episode as they come. You were supposed to take a minute, and enjoy the side quests. We aren’t supposed to watch a tv show for the destination.

The Mandalorian

What really makes this story unique is the style of direction that it takes. The story is written like that of an old western film, a genre of television that is rather iconic in American culture, but is rather difficult to replicate well. Somehow, the Mandalorian does an incredible job of replicating the feelings and action of old western films, all while including the various races and rich lore of the Star Wars universe. Truly a remarkable amount of effort went into producing this series!

The Garden of Words

Breathtaking animations and a solid set of music throughout. You feel a slowness to the film at times, that builds slowly until the release. But it worked for the film.

There could’ve been more said, more words to explain how the characters felt. But I think it was more impactful because of what wasn’t said.

In a very short amount of time that the film takes, I was able to empathize with the characters and I love the relationship between the simplicity of their lives and the complexity of their emotions.

When the characters finally opened up to each other, it felt like a breath of fresh air. They were each drowning in their lives, lonely and looked down upon. But together, they could finally breathe.

It’s a simple story, but poetic and meaningful.
