@koozzy No, the show's satire and politics were always apparent and clear since S1
It has lost its edge tho because the world's gone crazier but that's about it.
Actual problem is the cliffhangers, and edging it into each new season. S5 tho, fill finally be proper conclusion hopefully

@skippan You don't actually think this was a well directed episode do you?
Pros
+Acting all around. I am not a huge fan of Cillian Murphy but he delivered big time, Downey Jr of course did his thing, Damon was great, Safdie was the surprise hit imo, Florence didn't even have much screen time and she made a big impression, Blunt was good (her character is a terrible bitch but she filled the role well). And these are only a fraction of the main cast, but then every other scene has a major actor filling in a minor role, with of course Gary Oldman's Truman being the most notable.
+Sound design was phenomenal with the train going off it's tracks as both a fitting metaphor and a believable match for so many different scenes/sounds
+cinematography was excellent, the way it tied the sound with the events being a highlight as well as the visions where the moral self analysis of Oppenheimer was substituting reality with his mental state (the naked section of the interrogation, skin peeling off a cheering crowd, the missiles flying past his car). The visuals at the beginning are also wonderful, the moving electrons Oppenheimer visualizes to make his theories make sense were gorgeous. Lighting was great as well
+This movie nailed the tension maybe better than any other movie I've seen. This was something that made me concerned before watching because 3+ hours seems too long to maintain tension while also creating interesting events surrounding a science project in the desert but the early life, days as a professor, start of the Manhattan project, and the finale all bleed into each other incredibly well while mostly using metaphor and recurring themes to convey how Oppenheimer views his responsibilities, how others react to them out of his control, etc. in a way that makes a movie about the creation of a bomb complex but entirely worth every scene it contains. The bomb is NOT the only thing this movie is talking about and in my opinion that makes this so much more profound. Everything being interrupted by the "trials" of Oppenheimer and Strauss breaking down the complex questions for both the characters speaking and for the audience, both allowing anyone to be able to understand a very complex series of events but also using that time not to explain but to expand the characters and force them to address their actions which is the core of what this movie is about.
+It was never preachy, which is extremely hard for a movie about a highly political series of events. They address very interesting involvements Oppenheimer has with the Communist party but are sure to accurately portray them as more tangential than defining his beliefs and to address his continued work on a weapon he knew could destroy the world and the pride he takes in that work while also making it clear he is not a chud robot trying to blow up every enemy the US has. They had an excellent metaphor near the start where he explains how light is both a wave and a particle and it is contradictory but it still is the truth. People change their minds, you can associate with those without believing the same things as them, your work is not an encapsulation of your entire being, etc.
+Set/costume design was great, I'm not going to pretend like the 1930s/40s are the hardest era to replicate but they did their job
+Dialogue was above average but there were a number of weird bitsNeutral
*Kind of mis-portrayed Truman considering he literally almost ended his presidency to stop MacArthur from glassing China/Korea with nukes but the scene was fucking hilarious so it gets a pass lol
*You could put this in the negative section but it's more of an interpretation I have than necessarily a fault in the movie itself. The conversations this story had where phenomenal and they way they drove home the themes about the consequences of our actions is done in an exceptional way however one thing that rubbed me personally the wrong way was the entire time Oppenheimer (and his cunt wife) are continually placing the entire blame on him but that kind of goes against the story because he is just the catalyst and there are so many competing/cooperating forces that are determining the creation, use, and further development of the bomb. It feels like the last scene with Einstein is starting to get to this solution with all of these people praising him/Einstein to attempt to forgive themselves but the very end is just Wide eyed Cillian Murphy being like "Nah bro I set off a chain reaction that's going to destroy the world" so it works against itself. No of course you can interpret this multiple ways and maybe I'm reading this scene against its intention but it does really come off that way to me and with the friend I saw it with
*Midwit Nolan fans are going to bitch about this movie not being eventful because they can't appreciate an actually good filmCons
-Smooth brains will think it's too long (this is not an actual criticism)
-Smooth brains also will not like that they don't show the use of the bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (This is also not an actual criticism)
-The big twist in the trials is extremely predictable and almost everyone could see it coming from a mile away (The good thing is that it isn't really a major linchpin, at least in terms of you needing to be surprised for it to affect the viewing experience
-I think there is a fair argument against the use of black and white in the Strauss hearings. Yes, it kind of makes it look like a 1950s news story but it goes against the traditional psychology of film that says "Black and White=Older, Color=Newer" Since it is some of the last stuff to happen chronologically in the storyloading replies
@seanmsu read it all and I agree. laughed at your first 2 cons, as I also agree with them, and saw too many complaining about that :smirk: maybe they thought this was a Dark Knight movie. Took one of your ideas into my comment.

Pros
+Delicate handling of the "preferences" of both Laenor and Rhaenyra was quick, realistic, and tasteful
++++++++++Rhaenyra and Criston's conversation on the boat was fantastically acted and the dialogue was perfect. Again, this fantasy show feels almost too real in how it portrays their interactions
++++++++ Criston admitting what happened to the Green Queen was perfectly done where the dialogue had her suspecting Daemon right up until Criston says he participated And the Green Queen's entrance was powerful as well both her entrance to the wedding and to the Godswood after...
+Funny moment with the Lannister telling that sexist joke and neither Viserys or Rhaenyra reactingNeutral
*They keep on doing Viserys dirty and I get why but he looks like a total wimp here
*Daemon showing up to the wedding and just being allowed there was weird and kind of out of place considering Viserys literally just exiled him from the Crownlands
*Mushroom looks like he's relegated to Bongo player instead of core story teller unfortunately lolCons
-They should have had the tournament Criston raging and BTFOing everyone in the tournament while smashing Laenor's love all in one fell swoop is more appropriate than raging and smashing his face in the middle of the wedding
-Daemon killing his wife and then implying he smashed her head in with a rock is comically stupid since anyone could have seen that it wouldn't have been caused by the fallloading replies
@seanmsu You forgot to close one spoiler tag so the other were bugged. It is fixed now.
I disagree with other comments that the pacing of this episode is slow. I didn't notice it any slower than any GOT episode. Every episode doesn't need war or intensity to be satisfying. A good show needs character building to set up further story.

I actually think this show is moving at a way faster pace than GOT did. GOT (in the good seasons) took its time and it took a while for major events to happen. So far in HOTD a lot is happening in each episode to move the plot forward. And I think both paces work for their respective shows.

@matts It annoys me when people call anything that's not a battle or a big dragon set piece "slow and boring". This is the entire point of GoT and HotD. It's political, dramatic conversations and the chess piece moving of people of power. The show really is, so far, the best parts of GoT boiled down and streamlined. It's great.

@seanmsu People compare the 8 episode TV show to hundreds of hours of book and gameplay. People who read the book and played the games mostly can find the ending unappealing, but this applies to any adaptation. Although I did both, I liked the ending personally.
What in the actual f*ck.
I'm a reasonable man, I realize I've been crapping on D&D even more than usual this season but I really do have to give them props for doing exactly what they set out to do. They hoped to subvert our expectations and they did just wonderfully in that regards.
We expected all of that buildup over the years to actually amount to something that at the very least passes for a presentable series finale but instead, we got an incoherent, steaming pile of shit. Expectations subverted!
We expected all of that character development to actually result in a beautiful pay-off that respects the journey of self-discovery each and every one of our beloved characters went through to get to where they are now but instead, we got a painful, disrespectful cycle of character regression. Expectations subverted!
We expected the final season of this show to keep us at the edge of our seats with thrilling writing that didn't subvert our expectations for the sake of subverting our expectations via low-quality shock value-seeking writing, but to introduce plot twists that make sense within the overall narrative of the story but instead, we got CW-level predictable, cringe material. Expectations subverted!
I get it. I really do. GRRM let them down by not getting the books ready in time and so they had to improvise away from his influence, but this? This? For a long while, Game of Thrones lived up to the slogan of its parent network, it wasn't just TV, it was something different, something unique and now to have to see it come to this... it's nothing short of disappointing.
On the bright side though, at least this episode didn't suck completely. The acting, score and cinematography were all on point, so I guess it's nice that I didn't walk out of it having appreciated absolutely nothing about it.
So why do I even bother anymore? I honestly could not tell you, though it's probably a mixture of masochism and a faint sliver of hope that they won't flush our collective investment into this series down the drain by the end of it, just one more episode dammit.

@jinzulen Pretty convinced like a few others you're just upset the story ended in a way you didn't want it to. All this crap about the show ending bad, as someone who bringe watched it, it didn't end bad at all or lose any of momentum to the end, it just went in a direction most of you were in denial about it going even though it always hinted at it going this way
I have literally, literally no idea about anything anymore. All I know is that the story of Twin Peaks is, overall, a profoundly sad one. Not the heroic victory I was expecting.

Twin Peaks is indisputably one o the greatest shows ever, however you have to watch it at the right time and recognize a few things.
First off, if you get to the end of the 3rd episode and you still don't like it, then it may not be your type of a show. That third episode is really the point where you find out if you'll like the rest or not.
Secondly, if you watch it and don't like it, then wait a couple years then come back. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked it if I watched it a few years ago.
Thirdly there is a noticeable drop in quality about halfway through the second season. Hammer your way through these episodes, do not skip them. I know they are painful to watch but the payoff is worth it. The show eventually does get itself back on track just in time for the final episode to be the greatest episode of any television show ever.
I recommend this show to everyone but that doesn't mean it's for everyone. Give it a shot though, it's really fucking good

@seanmsu Update for the Return: Everything I said before stands, the newer season starts slow and seems like it's not going anywhere with every plot but if you're patient and see it through to the end then things will converge and they do so really well. They start this trend of ending most episodes with a musical act at the Roadhouse and I absolutely love those bits, really the strongest moments in terms of making it feel like the comfy Twin Peaks environment we know. It's also worth mentioning that the final 3 episodes are an incredible run that very much equal the original finale, both in tone and in quality.

I feel like you are being unfair. Mando is more about the world than the adventures of metal man and child
Overall, the series is slightly worse than Band of Brothers, however Okinawa (Episode 9) is better than any episode in BoB by quite a bit.

@seanmsu Saw this comment after watching Episode 1 and felt kind of defensive towards Band of Brothers because I wasn’t sure what The Pacific was about at that point. Now I agree fully! After seeing Episode 9, this whole show makes sense. I feel the same way about ‘Okinawa’ as I do about Band of Brothers’ episodes 6:‘Bastogne’ and 7:‘The Breaking Point’. They probably have the least dialogue but so much of the story is told in these episodes. A true masterpiece. Love the relationship between ‘Eugene Sledge’ and ’Snafu Shelton’ who were probably the most memorable characters in this series, both superbly played by Jospeh Mazzello and Rami Malik.

Honey, Season 3's episode endings at the Roadhouse are exactly the thing that kept me going through it. I love the full show, but those are in my heart together with the "Falling" song in season 1. I don't know if twin peaks could ever be as good as it is without their stunning soundtrack direction.

VIP3Another week, another unnecessary reboot of a fetishized show. A lot of time and effort is put into apologizing for "surrealist" works. When something seems bizarre or off-putting, it's really the symbol of [blank] that has kept the particular reviewer up for many sleepless nights and changes in meaning for them over years. It would be too simple, it is supposed, to only say the plot was weak and dialogue boring. To suggest camp as a lazy crutch to account for bad acting is to just miss the point! It's a flexible genre that not everyone tunes into for its ability to... make sense... or frame its alleged message in a way you particularly care to hear. ::huff:: Fine. There's some truth to the notion that one person's art is another's self-indulgent waste of time and resources. And in terms of "cultural impact," one must concede this is a "great" show that captured the momentum and fervor of its time and has carried such a special place that it's managed to reboot even if the notion of rebooting has smelled sour for longer than anyone cares to admit.
Whatever else I might figure out to say about this show as I carry on, I cannot get over how horrendously bored I am. One dimensional characters bouncing from one boring ass conversation to the next before schizophrenically altering their personality and plot line to be doing something that isn't better or worse than before and probably won't be given a resolution. The main arc and mystery could have ended it all mid-way in season 2, but they keep going...because. The forced introduction of painted-marionette characters to continuously drag the story along must exist in a collective blackout by the show's most ardent fans.
Check out my viewing habits. I watch nearly everything. Across cultures, eras, and languages I peek. I get that some people have very niche voices and that it can be nice just to find that someone does indeed have a voice. I get that some things are complex or difficult. I get that some things are goofy. I just don't get this. It feels bored with itself. Like someone with the resources to make a parody, or pay homage, or experiment in a bend or twist, just threw it all in a blender and poured it out on the table, dryly proclaiming, "eat." I liken it to the kind of "comedy" that comes from Comedy Bang Bang or Tim and Eric. "WE DID SOMETHING! ACCEPT US! NOT ALL COMEDY IS ABOUT LAUGHTER, DUH!" Okay, you complex, tortured souls you. So it goes not all drama has to feel particularly dramatic nor do all mysteries need to make you think, I guess.
It feels like when True Detective got undermined by its own popularity. Forcing more layers and conversations than were ever needed. It feels like if an X-Files subplot got particularly out of hand. It feels like the original college junior script for Fringe before it went through a 95% rewriting process. It feels like Wonderfalls in a universe where the word "charm" never existed. It's Carnivale without the mystery, style, or acting. It's an episode of Bate's Motel where it's 38 minutes of just Norman and Norma folding sheets and sweeping up the hotel before a slightly awkward conversation at dinner andthenohlookabloodstain cut to black. It's so goddamn boring I'm staring at a frozen frame of it because I had to capture the void and every time I look up it makes me feel even emptier. Now, go on, tell me that's Lynch's intent all along and now I'm finally starting to see the inherent brilliance and wisdom of his sad take on life. Or, let the conversation die like the show should have died in 1991, or whenever the middle of the second season aired.
loading replies
@dogg724 You don't get it at all. Not because it has overmuch profundity that you can't handle, but because you simply don't know how to approach surrealism. There is absolutely no point to the show. There's no point to art in general. Art is created through interpretation, it is and means whatever you, the interpreter thinks it does. Surrealism is a perfect microcosm of that concept, a perfect example that art is wholly and fundamentally subjective. All you have to do to enjoy and "understand" Twin Peaks is randomly ascribe any meaning you wish to it.
The story and art style definitely seem cool and interesting, but the long, dull, uninspired battle scenes drag on too much, and the sound effects just don’t make sense. Swords whooshing sound like transformers, and it’s all so exagerated, it’s off-putting. Don’t waste your time, this show isn’t worth it.

@whynothugo Fortunately people will know better than to take seriously such fleeting and unsubstantiated reviews; personally I found it to be amazing. My only complaint goes to the unannounced flashbacks which can be confusing at times.
Pros

+Outstanding costume design and visuals in general
+The moment with the surprise lightning was neat
+I like the general idea behind Ben Solo's redemption
+The acting was good enough
+Cone Head droid was BASEDCons
------------- The main story line was absolutely moronic Even if we suspend the disbelief in that There's this massive sith fleet of planet destroying ships. Why the fuck are they waiting to do anything? They're literally just asking to be destroyed. Even if Sidious wants to wait for Rey to claim the throne he could have facilitated her arrival in so many ways. Waiting for Kylo Ren to provoke her into coming was awful, lazy writing
-There is almost no connection to any of the previous movies' plot line. It felt like they just decided that they should forget all of the build up done in the past two movies and said "Fuck it, we'll just do episode 6 again."
-Dumb revisionist bullshit with 0 actual explanation literally all they had to do to justify the Emperor was say that his force spirit possessed a clone he had. Him surviving his fall is just as idiotic as Darth Maul's resurrection. Sidious is an awesome villain but his inclusion doesn't strengthen this film, it just cheapens the others. The backtracking on the Last Jedi telling us Rey was just a normal person was absolute dog shit too. It was JJ completely caving into moronic fans who want the canon to match their fanfics. And then when push comes to shove.... THEY FUCKING GO BACK ON IT AND CLAIM IT WAS MEANINGLESS. Like bitch! You just unnecessarily brought it up and made the entire movie about this dumb shit, you clearly thought it mattered enough to write 90% of the dialogue about it
-They just copied episode 6 except woah get this!.... There is a whole fleet of OP megaweapons and they're all just waiting for the rebels to blow them up OMG! There's just a massive amount of "OH you've seen this before but now it's even stronger!" and it is just so uninspiring
-That backtracking on Chewy's death objectively made the movie worse considering Chewy did literally nothing in the movie anyway after that bit. It's just another example of this movie being completely sackless
-the spy gag did not hit and served no purpose-The execution of all the subplots was really rushed, nothing they did had any weight to it until the final confrontation
-The last part is literally just Mass Effect 3's ending but with less weight because of the messy lead up
-The dialogue was kind of typical of Star Wars... which means bad... but it is what it is
-The world building was non-existent after that one festival bit. I want to know why it matters that the Sith fleet was destroyed. Are there not entire systems still loyal to the First Order? They give us nothing to go on. I mean even Episode 6 gave us little glimpses of other systems revolting after the destruction of the death starIt's sad that this is how the series will end, just trying to copy the earlier iterations with no respect for the new additions to the story or the backbone to defend decisions that were made that were good. Star Wars became huge and stayed huge because of the creativity. The fan response to the Last Jedi showed they couldn't try to be creative and tell the story in a unique way so they end up killing off the series with boredom. Rise of Skywalker isn't horrible but it is not worthy of being the big finale and it is easily the weakest in the series.

@seanmsu As for the First Order/"Final Order": They had some completely nonsensical sequence where star destroyers magically fall out of the sky because of the inevitable chain reaction after pure unfiltered evil in the person of Palpatine disappears into some whatever-soup.
It's funny to see bad reviews for this movie, and a lot of criticism towards JJ, but it's clear that all the choices made in this movie was to correct the choices made in The Last Jedi, the movie that was hated by all the fans till yesterday, but now people are praising.
The Rise of Skywalker is a great movie, specially for fans, it's a great way to end this saga, filled with fan service. I don't think I can say more than that without spoiling the experience for everyone.
All the critcs you see here, or on twitter, are coming from people who thinks star wars, a space opera, should be a deep and complex movie with fanfics about romances.

@benitesgui Last Jedi was hated by some of the fans, not all. Many fans loved it, many others liked it, many were lukewarm to it (no pun intended). There was a wide variety of reactions from fans, and it's completely incorrect to say that it was "hated by all the fans".

*Not crazy about Jaime returning to save Cersei as a storyline but it does make senseCons
-Golden Company had no pointFuck any of the brainlets who say Dany is acting against character. Remember that part about her being raised by her psychotic brother, or when she walked into a big ass fire expecting to die, or when she threatened to burn down Qarth moments after arriving there while her dragons were still babies, or when she just gave all of slavers bay to a mercenary because she broke up with him, or how she has a savior complex and resents anyone who doesn’t immediately accept her as queen, or how she’s gradually becoming less and less accepting of criticism while being more sure of her “destiny” to rule, or when she killed Sam's family instead of imprisoning/ransoming them or how she continues to try to bang her nephew. Yeah, this came out of nowhere though lmao. She's always had that edge, seems fair that watching her best friend get her head chopped off set her just over. This isn't to say she's completely crazy either, she very well could justify making an example of King's Landing in order to inspire fear in the rest of the Realm. Remember, just because a show doesn't do what you want it to do doesn't make it bad or not make sense.

Season 1: Topless orgies galore! Hell, everyone get topless! Had to close the blinds before watching an episode in fear of a neighbor walking down the sidewalk would look in.
Season 2: Rated PG for sexual situations.

Lol, as much as I love tits there was no scenes in these first two episodes where it was applicable? You comment here and on the premiere seem pretty petty

come on, this is Philly, what would you expect?
So can someone tell me what the point of the Van Alden storyline is? Since Season 2 he is just wandering around.... so unimportant that he didn't even appear in the last episodes of Season 3.

Are you serious? What are you expecting to happen or not happen? He has the most dramatic story line of all the characters. If you remember from way back he is the product of the everyone elses actions and environment. He had a plan and and goal (a wife, and a job) and got devoured by Atlantic City. He is so dynamic that he can go in any direction and influence or effect just about any other character or storyline. Think about everyone he has been involved with.
I did not expect it to be as good as Skyfall and that's just it. It's a good Bond, especially after Daniel Craig being the worst bond in his first two movies. Otherwise, the story was a bit of a let down. Still it was nice to see even more plot references to the classical James Bond movies - it comes to an end or betetr yet, the circle is (kind of) complete.
