Star Trek: Enterprise: Season 1

I can't average my ratings for this season because I'd have to go back and rewatch about a third of it to fill in missing episode ratings first. But like every other Star Trek series, Enterprise gets off to a bit of a shaky start. Episode quality is a bit all over the place, with awful episodes airing in between the average ones and only occasionally letting off something truly great.

But it's just season one. Something about the plot line started in the season finale should lead to more interesting arc-based stories.

Again with the repeating decimal. How do I do it?

I'm rounding this one down because reasons. Killing a main character in the season finale for no particularly good reason, being one of them. Also because of the very high suspension of disbelief required to take this show even remotely seriously… I firmly believe that the same effect could have been achieved with a touch more realism.

Assuming my math is correct (calculating average ratings on my phone on an airplane is hard), I came up with 7.57692307692 for this season.

I have no issue at all with rounding that up to an 8. The truly superb episodes in this season deserve it, even if there were several meh outings sprinkled in. When So Weird is good, it's really good.

Episode average rating for this season: 7.72

I'll believe it. This might be the closest my own personal average has come so far to matching Trakt's global average–currently 78% (or some fuzzy value around 7.8).

There were a few episodes that I wouldn't care to watch again, but there was far more good than meh.

It's a little (or a lot) hokey at times, but the premise is at least entertaining enough that I'll continue into season two. (Also a good excuse to watch Scott Bakula portray someone besides Capt. Jonathan Archer.)

Season average episode rating: 6.0454545… (yet another repeating decimal, wow)

6/10 seems about right for this season. There are a few really high points, but most of the episodes are underwhelming and easily forgotten. When it's good, it's great—but when it's not… find a good book?

Of the episodes I rated (12 out of 13; I wasn't rating episodes back when I watched the pilot of this show), the ratings average to 7.66666…

I'm happy to round that up to an 8, even though the final episode is not congruent with the rest of the season. The rest of it is pretty great indeed, overall.

Don't know how I managed it, but my average episode rating worked out to precisely 7.333333… Not as cool as working out to an integer, but still neat.

Numb3rs' biggest weakness (this season, at least) is that the good episodes are good, but there aren't enough of them. Great shows are consistently good, with perhaps a few exceptions per season. Numb3rs season 2 manages to be consistently good maybe half of the time, if I'm generous. The rest is "plot armor" writing and conveniences. (But what do you expect from an FBI procedural?)

My episode ratings average out to a 7.3 even, but I'm going to round it up anyway for how enjoyable this season was to watch. Sure, there are plot holes, technically impossible ops, and just plain bad CGI—but that's nothing new for this show. It's still a hell of a ride.

I'm not going to calculate an average because I'm missing a few episode ratings. But overall, while there are a few downright superb episodes, most of this season is quite "meh" indeed. And no, it's not because of the '90s visual effects; it's the writing.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Season 1

Of the 19 episodes (from 25 total) that I did rate, this season received an average rating of 6.84210526. There are some gems in here, but a lot of the season is built on shaky writing. As I recall, it gets better later; first seasons just aren't usually where it's at for sitcoms.

If I average out my episode ratings, I get just over an 8 for the season. But frankly, I think a 6 or 6.5 is more appropriate. This wasn't as good as the first season, somehow. It lacks the focus that permeated season one and made it absolutely compelling. Too many plot elements turn out to be more or less irrelevant this time around, instead of everything building to one climax.

It's still a good watch, and I'll round up from the high end to yield a 7 overall for this season, but there's a reason it took me nearly a year to actually watch these eight episodes. They're underwhelming compared to what preceded them.

The season starts off dragging a bit, and it took me quite a while to push through the first third or so. But once you get through the slow start, it takes right off. Now I just want to start season 2 immediately!

I'm with @DRNKMNKY on the casting, though. Everyone (not just the female characters) is model material. Not that I'm surprised—it's classic Hollywood casting…

6.5/10: The show gets off to a decent start, but several of the episodes in this first season are lackluster. The format they take on near the end, where often Gilligan has a problem that is solved just in time for someone else to acquire the same issue right before the credits (see "A Nose By Any Other Name" and "My Fair Gilligan" for standout illustrations of this) doesn't work for me. But one must watch through season 1 in order to reach the improved (and full color!) remainder of the series.

The 100: Season 2

Episode rating average: 7.125
Final score: 6.4/10 (docked for that mess of a season finale)

Most of the season is pretty great, but there's a little thing called "character" that I think the writers forgot about near the end because they wanted to stretch one episode into two, or something. So we get people making nonsensical, illogical decisions while claiming to have decided with their heads, not their hearts, and in reality using neither because they're just cardboard cutouts who do what the writers say.

Sigh. For a while we had some actual character development going, but they threw all that away in the end.

Episode rating average: 7.53846154
Rating I want to give the season: 7.5 (kind of like the first season)
Rating I have to give it: 7 or 8 (ugh)

This is frustrating. Some parts of season 2 were better than season 1, and some were steps backward. Overall it's roughly the same with regard to believability, unpredictability, character development/depth, etc.

I think my ultimate decision is swayed most strongly by the weakness of the Bram in labor camp and Maddie being ejected from the Green Zone arcs. They were just…not compelling. Plus, if I give this season a 7, the 8 I gave to season 1 balances the average out to 7.5, which is what I wanted in the first place. (Too bad that's not how season ratings work.)

Westworld: Season 1

Bit over the top in places with all the sex and blood, but usually all of those favored elements serve a plot purpose. I can't give the season any less than a 9 for sheer scale—the story of these 10 episodes is absolutely huge—and ambition. It delivers.

Slow at points, enough that I took a break from watching for some time, despite starting while the season was yet unfinished. But the last few episodes are very much worth the journey.

(added five years later because apparently I forgot to calculate it back then)

Trakt thinks these are 22-minute episodes, for the most part, because on-demand services list them as such despite the true durations usually falling around 22:50-something… Sigh.
