To be Continued...?
This movie is a good watch. It has good performances by the 2 kids and the mother (Saldana.) There is some debate about Ruffalo his role, but I definitely enjoyed it. I have to be honest that I am not that familiar with bipolar disorder in real life, so I am probably not the best to ask if he overacted or did or did not display the full palet of manic depression, but I didn't see that. To me he displayed the various parts of manic depression and gloom, energetic moments and hyper-activeness and also the calm and happy moments where he can just enjoy everything as it is. So as far I can say he was subtle and covered all the aspects in his act.
I was disappointed about the ending though. The story steadily progresses, but it never fully got to that conclusion you are waiting for. It just stops at some point, which is a bit anticlimactic. This might be intended to make a message that there is no end to his struggle, but it did left me feeling a bit out of the loop. A 'to be continued' that will never be followed up.
Came for Elisha Cuthbert and I was disappointed it only had 6 episodes.
After the pilot I understood why, and I think 6 episodes is even too many. Really bad writing and situational sketching, I feel sorry for the actors who played in this sham.
Following is a short combined review of the first 5 X-men movies, with the focus (of course) on this last one.
I just did a rewatch of the 5 X-Men movies released so far, this one easily tops all the previous ones.
Even though continuity is something they just don't seem to be able to manage properly in the X-men (cinematic) universe, and this movie also has its issues with that, it does not wreck this movie and is more of a sidenote than anything else. Mostly because the movie in itself (besides some smaller plot holes made for entertainment purposes) is very well worked out.
While the first 3 movies had some superior actors to the last 2, the stories are a lot better thought out. Popularity of the franchise with the mainstream cinema goer has gained a lot too since then, therefore its budget is much bigger as well (except for the 2006 'The Last Stand' which also had a massive budget.) This means bigger and more intense special effects.
I am of the opinion that Avoy and Fassbender are doing a great job on screen with their respectable character, but they do not top the iconic McKellen and Stewart, who are also present in this movie btw. It is hard to compare though, since the former have to play them at a younger age when the characters had a lot less experience than their older versions in the first 3 movies.
Talking about a recast; Mystique/Raven also got a new actress in the previous movie. Where it was first Rebecca Romijn who took up her role, she is now replaced with the (now massively popular) Jennifer Lawrence. I am a big fan of her work, and she does very well in X-Men too. It is only a massive compliment to Romijn that I think of her performance of Mystique as even better.
I found it sad that those 3 older (to me better) performances needed to work with way weaker movies and scripts.
With saying all that I also need to say that with supporting roles from Ellen Page, Evan Peters and Peter Dinklage this cast is without a doubt the better one overall.
The 2 newer movies, and especially this one, get more time in setting up a story and take time in character development and better timed dialogues. The movies are about 30 minutes longer than the first and the third one, but the rushed feeling in the second one proved that this is not a guarantee for a better movie. There seem to be more sets, more changing situations and every shot, scene and setting seems better worked out with more attention to detail. And all this without getting hopelessly lost in a confusing back and forth plot. Which is quite the accomplishment considering it contains time travel!
With a 3rd instalment on the way (2016) I can only imagine what they have in store with us. Apocalypse and his 4 horsemen are coming (already giving us a glimpse of them after the credits) and we will get Jubilee!
With a bad actor like Seth McFarlane in the main role it is asking for a bad movie. Many of the jokes are unoriginal and boring too. The cameo's were the best of the movie and of course Barney making a 1 line appearance.
What a dumb movie. There was some fun acting from Lee and Depp, but the best parts were the references to other movies...
I wasn't planning on watching this movie at first, but I constantly found out about more things that should make me interested in it.
In the end it wasn't that special, but it has its moments.
I watched this movie for Jeff Bridges, but Alicia Vikander stole the show.
A bad movie that isn't actually as bad I expected. Honorable mentions for Olivia Williams and Jeff Bridges for their acting, and an honorable discharge for the writers please.
I wasn't that impressed with this documentary. It simply follows the events and actions around Edward Snowden using actual footage of the journalists and himself. That's just about all it is.
A dark post-apocalyptic movie with a heavy drama setting.
It is a movie that is certainly interesting to watch, even though it does tend to borrow a lot of its aspects from other (more succesfully worked out) movie plots like 'Das Experiment' and other doomsday movies. The ending is a bit weak, even though they tried to make it original, and some charater choices are debatable.
But even with that this is a movie worth watching.
Best one out of the 3 Hobbit movies.
Not bad, not bad at all!
A convincing Jason Bateman and a crazy attractive Olivia Wilde are not the only things that make this movie worth watching. Even though the plot is not very original, the dialogue and style of the movie is quite cool.
The big reveal is finally here. And pretty early too! A good thing I didn't read the UBW story yet, now I am pretty excited for who is still set to fight who. I hope Archer can humiliate Gilgamesh at some point. But I suspect this route too will end in a Saber victory.
"Thank you for keeping our secret" they said, while she did her utmost best to reveal everything about them for a news story...
Shitty movie: ugly weird looking CGI, bad plot filled with holes and stupidity, shitty dialogue, no character development, useless characters, dumb origin stories etc etc etc. When will Michael Bay quit making movies?
WIll Arnett's bad jokes are probably the best thing about this movie.
That was pretty pointless...
I expected a drama with heavy character development but with a very minimalistic take. At least I got that last part right. Besides the acting (especially by Elle Fanning) this was a waste of time.
Update from my first comment:
I really enjoy this show, especially after the 1st season (which had some startup problems with the acting and stories.) It is not the best or most witty out there, but it (usually) isn't very bad either.
However, now the 4th season has reached its end I think the show is running at its creative end. I'll give it one more season where they need to reinvent themselves or make a nice exit story. If this doesn't happen it could become boring quick and is at risk of turning into one of thos uninspired run of the mill sitcom. That would be a sad end for this show imho.
Felt very awkward and staged. I understand how they wanted a literal translation of the work, but it didn't really work in this case. Couldn't watch it through and turned it off after 1/3 of it.
Felt a bit rushed overall.
A more adult & futuristic version of 'Ruby Sparks'
As a big Fate fan I love to see the Fate routes back on screen. This series has a more 'stepping in' pace and is clearly aimed at both existing fans and viewers new to the franchise.
This makes a very balanced series, but it can be a bit repetitive and boring at times for the older fans.
Luckily Ufotable throws in everything they got and artwork is so amazing you don't really get the time to get bored.
If a movie could be rated a 0, this one would get it
The first one was fun, this one was dumb.
This was a waste of time.
Love the ratings for 1 and 10 on trakt :D
The movie lives in no way up to it's 9 year old predecessor.
Yes, the visuals are still stunning, yes the acting is overall still pretty good with many big names, yes the violence is still very overdone without turning into a Tarantino movie and yes it still takes place in the same universe as before and even some familiar characters make a comeback.
But it is very obvious they tried to recreate the first movie, but with a different story and characters. There was no real intention in building something new, innovative or unique with this one. It is perfectly described in a review one of the comments here already shared: "Unlike its first incarnation which had an artistic execution and vision, this version is literally all execution without any artistic vision."
Talking about story. You do keep wondering what will happen next, but it is in no way as interesting as it could be. The timeline is very straightforward, and the connection with characters from different storylines are a bit too easy. And in the end it is just 1 guy who does the heavy lifting and finishes everything (HULK SMASH!) oh, but we don't know how he ends up...
If you did not liked the first one, you won't like this one either. And if you liked the first one, there is not a big chance you like this one too (unless you just want to gaze at boobs and enjoy mindless violence.)
You can call this movie the bad counterpart of Hunger Games imitation 'Divergent'
What struck me immediately is that during the opening of 'The Giver' it is said that fear, pain, envy, hate are all eradicated, but within the first few minutes you see jealousy, doubt, disobedience, melancholy, disappointment and even talk about pain in a main public event. Within a world where this should've been non-existing (where people even got rid of seeing colors) this is a strong contradiction.
Unfortunately the movie never really recovers from this, and he predictability of the story did not help either. Since the main 'enemy' is (or should be) the lack of emotion in the society, which get undermined and contradicted constantly, the bases of the storyline is very thin. During the whole movie, but especially near the end of the movie, people pierce through this armor of neutrality, even while on the suppressing medicine. Also, from different 'hints' you could see there were already cracks in the foundation of the society even before the main character was chosen. So in the end I am left wandering that even without the main character, or if he was to fail, wouldn't it come all tumbling down eventually?
There are some things, besides the well done acting performance, that makes the movie differ from other movies. What makes 'The Giver' really unique is it's way it uses colors in its story development in combination with the visual appearance of the surroundings and sets. Even when everything else discarded this made the movie worth watching.
ps. maybe it is not fair comparing it to Hunger Games (so that's why I didn't besides in the first sentence) since it is derived from a book which is much older than the Hunger Games trilogy, but it really has many overlaps which could be because this movie was released after HG and there is a good chance it only made it to screen because of the HG. But what do I know? xD
Boring and uninteresting movie. Some of the action was ok, but not spectacular. Not even Pearce could save it. Not sure why I even finished watching it.
Just a continuation of the cool 'Malcolm in the middle' show. If you like this, you should check it ou.
Just changed my rating from an 8 to a 7 because of the gradual decent to dumbness of this show.
SPOON!
Your shout seems a bit short, please put some more thought into it.
Shitty.
The first one was already bad, but it was unique, fun too watch and had some unique acting and features.
This one is everything the first movie was, without it's positive points and all aspects done a tad worse.
