Black Mirror: 4x02 Arkangel

ok ok i thought that we were going to have more before that ending that scene with her beating her mom up was pretty brutal, the episode takes a bit to get going but it pays off, not a perfect one, but a relevant one perharps.i just wish there was a bit more before it ended or made things slightly more interesting by putting Sara as a LGBT character for example

@marasvinicus How does making her gay make this more interesting? It would totally change the dynamics of what it was trying to pull off...

@mistamojo_ca I'm curious to hear what you make of the final shot? I fail to allude much of a point in this. So she didn't get the replacement Teddy... either she's gone mad or there are people in this world which can still live without a worry for food or water so that it's an acceptable cost to risk three lives for this instead, lol... The kid was dying, it's a dead world apparently but they are traveling somewhere far out to a factory (to look for a box she has had the serial number noted down)? If this really was a world like that they would have stitched something together themselves instead of disappearing on the kid.

That was a heavily loaded episode. But the writers already said loong beforehand they'd include these topics/are contemplating on how to deal with writing a cop show in these times, so no surprise there. They did a good job, especially not ending on a joke, even if the second episode sets itself free from the context of the precinct to be "fun" again even if it might be for just one episode. It's foremost a comedy after all and making fun inside the precinct is going to be difficult in this last season, given what's going on currently in this world. Completely ignoring it, in quite a diverse cop show no less that never shied away from addressing issues, would be irresponsible. Personally, I am looking forward how - if at all - they are going to deal with what this first episode set in motion in this challenging last season. This show never shied away from addressing the elephant in the room, never too subtle either. But now it's a problem for some?

loading replies

@ds1 To me 144 episodes watched over 8 years is enough to get stumped by an episode that is tearing on the foundation of what the show built over that period. This isn't fake outrage, just disappointment in having a show ruined like that.

Midnight Mass: 1x07 Book VII: Revelation

I think this one is my less favourite from Mike Flannagan. I kinda got the whole plot by the middle of ep 2; and wasn't very off at the end. Overall, i found it a little bit boring, and the religious theme is so central that is not of my liking. The final speech from Kate was the really only memorable thing from the whole series. Also, Mike, why in the actual fuck don't show us if the fucking vampire burned or not. Since is not a "happy ending" (at least not as in the Haunting's), you could at least give us the satisfaction of seeing the mf burn . It's a 5 for me, mainly because of Kate (if not, it would be lower)

loading replies

@wither I think it's safe to say he burned; they talk about the distance to the mainland on the boat and the final line is "I can't feel my legs".

@ds1 I've watched the show from day one and was mostly entertained by it and am perfectly fine with the staff/cast weaving in their opinions and real life topics from time to time but this episode was basically the "white guilt" version of producing and starring in a cop show. They "dealth with it" with little depth. To me it was just off-putting to have established characters as mouth pieces only to get the "OK" to continue. Utterly shallow especially considering the follow up episode.

Black Mirror: 4x05 Metalhead

Not as terrible in execution as Arkangel but I couldn't help but burst out laughing in one of the key moments due to the stupidity of this where it should have been a moment of tension instead. I mean that this show is an anthology is a good thing but this was on par of British no-budget genre film... if you want me to invest in your setting at least bother to make things to have at least a little bit of sense. Turning it black & white is not enough.
- The dogs technical functions seemed to jump around all the time... This is sort of endless. / Can magically generate and store power forever apparently (since it can still charge from within the factory)... still goes on standby. / Instead of killing the target point blank it prefers to instill a tracking device before it kills the person. / It just hides in the factory.. because robots. / Abandons factory straight away and goes for the target not instilled with a tracking device. / Can at first only track people via tracking device (still kills the other guy and can drive a car just fine however), later on it can still employ a sort-off wallhack (it did the tracking by an endless stream of blood left behind LOL)... however once it was in the house it could not see behind the furniture she was located at. / Can apparently only kill with a weapon(knife here) after it lost it's weapon - scary. / They suddenly swarm the area so they can supposedly communicate with each other, but that isn't really seen in their behavior regardless.
- The reason for getting a teddy this far out can't be made up. If this really was a dangerous world people would have helped themselves differently (and not by leaving the dying kid there). This wasn't just something that happened a few days ago anyways.
- We are supposed to believe this is a world that exist. So obviously she first runs away when the first guy gets attacked, only to stand still to have him tell to run away again on which she still does this as she wouldn't have cared either way.
- These things get rekt by energy drain, paintjobs, trees and are only good in close range. Now this will wipe humanity out for certain...

loading replies

@gongasf Since this is Black Mirror we can assume these are man made. Seeing how the robo dogs were swarming their previous locations it is pretty clear to me that they would follow a systematic logic - and are not self-aware beings with individuality. But even then, it would be quite the dumb machine if it actually had a quirky personality and just wanted do it's killing in such an inefficient way. So yeah, this was 100% lowquality fiction based on "WHAT IF THE ROBOTS AT BOSTON DYNAMICS STARTED KILLING HUMANS" x "POST-APOCALYPSE". Please don't make excuses for the writers.

@mistamojo_ca This wasn't really for the love of a child specifically. It was because they promised her sister. I know it's true that a child gets upset about loosing it's favorite toy, but it's a child afterall. The show tells itself what happens to their toys after a while in the next episode (and lookalikes usually work too to distract one). Here we have a lady with the serial number of the toy written down on her hand traveling with two blokes somewhere far out to a factory, all the while when a child is suffering and close to dying... This has me at a hard time believing this is about the spirit of humanity, more the opposite really. Consumerism won (given the lengths one would have to get through to get that serial number and the toy being the final thing the boy supposedly desired from them and them weighting this that heavy)...

Thanks for your reply though. I'm pretty jaded with BM I guess.

@marasvinicus The "Arkangel" technology does not really fit together with LGBT topics, or at least would have driven the narrative towards this completely and thus distract from the core idea (of her mother overstepping the boundaries and abusing it). This was teenage angst at play so it doesn't matter if you think that her "issues" were superficial (kinda offensive tho). Her mom would have reacted the same way regardless of what "issue" she would have assessed in her daughter's life.
For me this would have been more interesting if they focused more on the harms of "censoring" your child's perception of the world or the effect of "body mods" for a growing child. There was little point in putting on a generic drama for this kind of a cliché.

Dunno why he wanted to report this, but it certainly is an odd statement to make imho :]...

@dtsouza Given your Jon Snow profile pic I'd imagine you saw this plenty before on episodes during the final GoT season (eg. 8x03). However I'll expand that to me this wasn't just because of clunky writing and preachiness but the fact that they decided to recontextualize the entire show. I brought up the "white guilt" comparison because this was lacking the nuance you'd expect to see from characters who are involved with the police force. Instead the writers were content with just having the main cast being "The Good Ones" and having a majority be painted as potentially corrupt and bad actors. Basically a big "we are sorry for continuing with our cop comedy but it's ok because 'we know'" checkbox for the price of putting the department in a bad light.

Let's hope the cringe AF writing was all crammed in the premiere so they get it out of the way and move on politics free for the rest of the season.:fingers_crossed:

Channel Zero: 1x06 Welcome Home

I have a few questions (as usual):
- Why did the show appear again in TV after both Mike and Eddie were stuck in that other world (Candle Cove)?
- Why was Eddie a tooth monster? If I remember correctly, Gene "only" broke his finger, so he could've been a bone monster or something, but there wasn't anything related to teeth in their childhood fights.
- Why could only children "find" Candle Cove on TV (or more accurately: why did it appear only to them)? And what was that in the show that made children attack people, kill them and obey to Eddie? There weren't any hidden messages, orders for assault or anything like that in the episode snippets we've been shown...
- Why did the children listen to Mrs. Booth? Just because he sacrificed his son to Eddie?
- If Eddie was the real creator of Candle Cove, how did he make the show? How did he broadcast that on a secret channel, only to children to be seen?
- What kind of powers did Eddie have to have been able to stop Mrs. Booth's seizures?

I know it's fiction, sci-fi, but I think they could easily have answered all of these plot holes. Not with down-to-earth things, but I'm sure they could've think of something if they just took more time to build a better plot.

loading replies

@kbogesz There are indeed quite a few plotholes in this especially in regards to the TV show which kinda sucks. As for the teeth I'd guess that it is because of Eddie (?or Mike) having one additional teeth and that being their main identification to keep them apart (which would fit with his goal of crossing over as Eddie).

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a: 1x01 or not to [B]e

This first episode was really soulless. We're dumped in the middle of a fight, with no idea of the sides or the stakes. The fight scenes may be cool to watch, but there's no actual story. I'm guessing that this is supposed to resonate with fans of the game. I'm clearly not the target audience.

loading replies

@bidossessi Quite honestly I would wait with watching this if you have not played the game (which is fantastic btw.). This has been announced to be a full two cour show and will deviate from the game - but it's anyone's guess if the aim is to grab new anime watchers or the players of the game. Fwiw this was pretty much 1:1 how the game starts out (with minor hints of stuff the game gets to only later on) and it even tries to mirror some of the various gameplay styles but it is certainly strange when it's not interactive. That said this will most certainly not be able to replicate the same experience with the different endings in this medium (especially the final "E" one).

Entertaining series but the ending was rather ridiculous. 50+ infected people and not a single one of them with the self preservation instinct to find some shade? I know these are Christcucks so they’re not the sharpest knives in the drawer but still, even with the buildings and the boats burned there’s still tons of ways to avoid sunlight, from hiding under rubble, bridges, stairs, trees, a tarp, digging a hole, putting clothing over any exposed part of your body, etc. Instead they all just stand there and die.

loading replies

Unless I missed it the only advertised "price to pay" was having to die once - nothing was mentioned of having the urge to feed on blood or becoming nocturnal. Since the mass ended in chaos and they all went amok they only learned the details of it after the bell got them back to the church and they were more sane again. How they went out made sense to me and aligns with their religious believes/values as well as being the last remnants of a dying island community.
To me the whole setup was more so ridiculous. They did seem to have a plan to "spread the gospel" but the apparently they did not think about it a whole lot...

Too bad that it had so much nudity and porn talk. Now I can't show it to (younger) family members.

@pellea Which of the two Asuna rape scenes you mean? The tentacle or the one in front of Jesus? Because the former certainly was. And this time around they extend it even further... while no mouth stuffing we get prolonged shots of getting in between her breasts and thighs instead... and she doesn't do anything because she just "wanted to make sure she had their allegiance correct". I hold SAO in low regard and moments like this do little to sway my opinion.
