The Orville: 1x10 Firestorm

Reply by FinFan

Robert Picardo! Such a joy to see him in an allegedly satire show of his former show. I do hope these trekkie treats will keep coming (c'mon, Seth, just get Patrick Stewart on speed dial, already).

This episode was creepy as hell! It's like The Orville stopped being The Enterprise for an episode to become the Event Horizon instead. I get shivers and goosebumps every time I think of that dreadful ship... Rambling aside, great creepy episode (good job with the clown, btw)!

@misnomer getting Patrick on the show would be awesome. It might be possible since I remember Patrick doing Family Guy. Who knows.

100% They're in a alternate universe... why tell us all of that information that it may be possible and then they end up in a place they have never been before/can't recognise.

@sonnythebear agreed, but I think they were in an alternate universe in the first place and this may be just another one.

The Orville: 1x08 Into the Fold

I've been enjoying this show quite a bit. The mix of sci-fi and Seth's kind of humor is pretty good imho.
In this episode though, I was severely annoyed by Dr. Finn stabbing Drogen - the guy hadn't done anything to hurt or threaten her, and she just stabs him, instead of knocking him out. Then he came at her with the knife and she shot him; that's more "fair", I suppose. Then later, she tells Ty to set the phaser (?) on stun, because "They may not value life, but we do." And she's the friggin' doctor!

@dinsdale You know, it didn´t bother me when I watched it but now that I read it you may have a point. Then again she tried reasoning with him up to that point and it brought her nowhere. And she was worried sick about her children and from a mothers point of view that´s strong incentive. So in the end from that perspective her actions are comprehensible.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

After realising it´s been a good 15 years that I´ve watched TNG I decided it´s time again. Yes, the first season is far removed from what the show went on to become and I remember when they originally aired I rejected it. I couldn´t come to grips with the characters and some of the first scripts were awful. But everything turned around and it became one of the best shows (not only in the genre) ever made.

I still only own the DVD version, I´m not a huge friend of all that remastering. I´m sure it looks and sounds better but I like to experience it the way it was originally done.

@sarosauce Thanks for the links.

So far I´ve seen only one TNG episode on BluRay (Tapestry) and I was a bit thrown of. It looked great, colors are brilliant but I had difficulties adapting to that. It almost looked to real. How to explain? I never had problems believing the sets to be real in SD. In HD they looked so well that I actually percieved them as just that - a movie set. I could even make out imperfections in the color or the build f.e. I hope I can reflect what I mean.
I watched several TOS episodes in HD, again looking great and, interestingly, here the higher resolution wasn´t a problem maybe because the sets were simpler back then. But the remastered part where they put in new effects, that I didn´t like. Enhancing something that was originally there is OK but putting in new things ? No thanks (similar to SW Trillogy). It seems that in TNG they did the good remastering.
Anyway, I since somewhat changed my mind in general towards the HD versions and they are now coming at reasonable prices so I think I will get them at some point.

Upon watching this I find it more and more likely that a theory I have read about is possible.
I'm not quite over the Klingon revamp but placing the show in the Mirror Universe would nullify the problems and explain how "un-star trek" the Starfleet people are acting. Even the amount of lighting in the ships, tech and the general feel of it all (including the ominous shadowy figures of Starfleet Command) make sense in the Mirror Universe..
Even if the theory isn't correct: big fan of this show.

@mansemat That´s an interesting theory. Wish I hadn´t read it thought (but that isn´t meant to be critique). But it would turn everything upside down.

@genetai When I first heard they are doing a new Trek show I was over the moon. When I read about it in the month following my enthusiasm somewhat deminished. It won´t be the Trek of old of that I´m certain. It still can be good.

Really miss this show! I'm so sorry that James Woods' brother died, for more than one reason. That ended the show because Mr Woods was soooo distraught...

loading replies

@rhondasharp on what info do you base that ? Woods himself said in an interview they (the cast) were surprised about the cancellation

"We're a little baffled by the decision but we’re very supportive," Woods said Tuesday. "None of us can figure out quite why. But we have no bad feelings. This show did an enormous amount for me personally. We all won doing the show." Woods said he and the cast and crew were "very saddened" that the show didn't continue but they were trying to be positive.

It was the writers strike and in the end the rating in the 18-49 demo that hurt the show and lead CBS to the decission to cancel.

The Sum of All Fears

A nearly perfect thriller with one huge downside and absurdity in the form of an absolutely unbelievable part of the plot: a no-body in the form of a lowly CIA analyst cannot only convince a high-ranking US military person to let him communicate with the Russian president (during the midst of the beginning of a nuclear war between the USA and Russia nota bene (!)) , no, he can even convince the president to abort further nuclear attacks on the USA. Absolutely rubbish and I will never understand what director Phil Robinson and his colleagues where think when coming up with this particular aspect of the plot!

@drnkmnky The fact that Ryan is a nobody in this incarnation spawns from the fact that this is a reboot-story (see my comment if you please). In the Books he is anything but a nobody at this point in his career having already dealt with a lot. He was well known and respected. I totally agree with you that this is one of the major flaws in the movie that didn´t work out.

Mars

I am all for this kind of stuff - going into space, colonization, living among the stars and I hope to witness this when it happens. But I am very much on the fence with this show. maybe my expectations were too high. The concept of the show is good as is the execution. The documentary parts are very informative and insightful. Then there is the scripted part that is all about dramatization. And most of it is due to illogical decisons of the characters. The science isn´t waterproof and I felt there are a lot of plot holes. One thing this shows, and I´m not sure if intentional or by accident, is that humans will stay humans. They take their structures and hierachies with them no matter where they go.

@myndflyte32 Agreed. If we don´t overcome things like greed and power struggles living on Mars will be but a pipe dream.

Another Wesley-Crusher-to-the-rescue episode. yawn They tried to cover that fact a bit by adding Lefler. But even beside that the whole plot is to obvious. Stupid episode.

loading replies

Maybe the choice of words was a bit harsh - let´s just say I don´t think it´s a memorable episode. It wasn´t my intention to downplay Leflers part. I would have liked for here to become a more recurring character - I actually really like her in the New Frontier book series.
As for Wes - I think hate is a strong word, it´s more a dislike. I wasn´t much older than the character itself when I first saw the show but he never apealed to me. Which isn´t Wheaton´s fault, it was the writing at times. I always saw Wes as the eager puppy. He became more mature later on but by then the damage was done.
I know you can´t expect every episode to have a deep story with huge moral implications but episodes like "The Game" always left me wondering if there really wasn´t a better script available. But it´s all a matter of perspective and with a rating of 77% it´s obvious a lot of people liked it.

It's a first effort at adapting Star Trek to the feature film format, and it shows. Pacing is very slow for most of the film, only picking up near the climax. The slowness is not helped by long, drawn-out shots of the ship—leaving spacedock, exploring new environments, etc. At the time, I suppose, the audiences probably loved getting to see such views of the ship they'd known up until then only on small television screens, but that's the only purpose these…let's call them "ship porn" shots…serve. Dramatically, they belong on the cutting room floor (or, more accurately, should never have been shot, given how much of the $43 million budget effects shots consumed).

There just isn't enough plot to fill the runtime of this film. It feels like a standard one-hour TV episode script stretched to fill 2+ hours with eye candy. Presented as an episode of the original TV series that ran from 1966-1969, the film's plot would likely have been quite at home. As a full-length feature film, though, it felt like a slog. For the first 90 minutes or so I found myself often checking the playback position, the movie-watcher's version of constantly asking Mom, "Are we there yet?"

That's not what you want your viewers to do when they watch your film.

Update from the future: In summer 2019, TrekMovie interviewed Douglas Trumbull about his work on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, as a lead-up to the film's 40th anniversary and Trumbull's first appearance at a Trek convention. I´m a Trek fan so I will always love and cherish this movies. But putting the Trek-glasses aside everything you mentioned about this movie is true and I have no problem admitting it. The Story also has a certain resemblance to the original series episode "The Changeling". Therefore I would agree with your "6"rating - but then I put my Trek-glasses back on ;-)
